A Brief History Of Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom

Digital objects are composed of bitstreams, sequences of 1’s and 0’s, which require specific software (and in some cases hardware) to make the content understandable to human users. Digital objects, like word processing documents, digital images, websites, e-mails, datasets and so much more, are fragile, easy to modify, and susceptible to bit rot (loss or reordering parts of the bitstream) and obsolescence. Digital preservation is a combination of policies and workflows that dictate the active management of digital objects to ensure their continued authenticity and meaningful access over time. Obsolescence is one of the unending battles that digital preservationists fight. …

Religious Or Secular: Does Religious Affiliation Affect Lgbtqi Collections At Private College And University Libraries?, Sophia Neuhaus

Staff publications, research, and presentations

This research project focuses upon private colleges and universities of different faith traditions and a control group of secular institutions. The central question in this study is whether religious affiliation influences both the college climate for LGBTQI individuals and the resources academic libraries provide to their communities. A secondary question explores how these same institutions might be influenced by the political environment of their host states. For example, do Presbyterian colleges in conservative states differ from those in liberal states? This poster session provides results based upon an examination of 200 secular, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic institutions.

The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental, exploratory study was to create a metaliteracy course for online Ed.D. students and determine if there was a relationship between the Metacognitive Strategies for Library Research Skills Scale, Metaliteracy Pretest, and Metaliteracy Posttest. Library literature is lacking on assessment of information literacy skills as determined by a new term, metaliteracy, and the goals and objectives associated with this new term. A course was created in the researcher’s institution’s learning management system, Canvas, using metaliteracy goals and objectives. Ai And Creating The First Multidisciplinary Ai Lab, Bohyun Kim

In this chapter, contributing author Bohyun Kim discuss artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning and why they are important for libraries. Kim shares how the University of Rhode Island created the first multidisciplinary AI lab, which launches in the fall of 2018. She discusses how the AI lab will be used to further research, discussion, and exploration of AI, and shares how such an environment can help facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration and foster interdisciplinary thinking. Kim shares the future hopes of the AI lab and AI.

• Purpose
• Library work is increasingly being explored from the perspective of design. Still, little work has actively explored specific aspects of design as they relate to library cataloging. This study seeks to dive deeper into the relationship between library cataloging and design by exploring a specific aspect of design—the concept of repertoire, or the use of previous experiences and bodies of knowledge during current work.
• Design/methodology/approach
• To examine catalogers’ use of repertoire, this study employed a juxtaposition of field observations of professional library catalogers’ work processes with elements of “think-aloud” protocols.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate what metadata elements for access points currently exist to represent diverse library reading materials, either in libraries or from external sources, as well as what metadata elements for access points are currently not present but are necessary to represent diverse library reading materials.

Design/methodology/approach A field scan of thirteen contemporary metadata schemas identified elements that might serve as potential access points regarding the diversity status of resource creators as well as topical or thematic content. Despite interest in the application of design thinking and methods in librarianship, there seems to be a disconnect between application and education to support it. This study used an online

questionnaire to elicit feedback from library workers in the United States about interest in and use of design thinking and methods in library practice, and the need for design skills and abilities in library education. We found that practicing librarians perceive the relevance of design thinking and methods to library work, although opinions vary based on library and work type. The Medical Library Association recently announced its commitment to diversity and inclusion. While this is a positive start, critical librarianship takes the crucial concepts of diversity and inclusion one step further by advocating for social justice action and the dismantling of oppressive institutional structures, including white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalism. Critical librarianship takes many forms but, at its root, is focused on interrogating and disrupting inequitable systems, including changing racist cataloging rules, creating student-driven information literacy instruction, supporting inclusive and ethical publishing models, and rejecting the notion of libraries as neutral spaces. Biographical Sketch

Marjorie Bates was born in Cambridge, MA on July 31, 1897. During her childhood her family moved to Braintree, MA, and in September of 1915 she entered the two-year teaching program at Bridgewater State Normal School. She graduated in June of 1917 and the following September started her fist teaching job in Falmouth, MA. Bates taught in Falmouth for one year before attending Burdett College in 1918. It is unclear whether she finished the program there. In March of 1920 she began teaching fifth grade at the John Hancock School in Quincy, MA, but it is unclear how …

Initially conceived by the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System in 2013, How-to Talks by Postdocs is a series of instructional brown-bag lunch talks presented by postdocs about how to do something related to the health sciences. These are not seminar talks, but an opportunity for postdocs to hone their science communication skills by informing the public about a topic related to the health sciences.

As a profession, we talk the talk of valuing diversity and inclusion, but do we walk the walk with our hiring practices? The profession stresses the importance of “a good fit” when hiring, but we rarely interrogate the fact that “a good fit” can be a reflection of our implicit biases. Academic librarians conducted a survey of hiring policies with a focus on the processes (or lack thereof) of recruiting candidates from underrepresented groups. This session will report on their findings and recommend the implementation of specific practices designed to create an inclusive candidate pool and an equitable search

Usability Study Of The Coates Library Website After Redevelopment Using Laptop And Mobile Devices, Elizabeth Poff

This article describes a usability study of the newly redeveloped website for Trinity University's Coates Library. Conducted in 2019, the study involved eleven participants in two groups – six laptop users and five mobile users. Each participant observation focused on six tasks: navigating to the site, finding a liaison librarian, determining if the library had a particular database, locating information on borrowing privileges, finding if a study room was available, and locating a particular special collection. The results revealed that laptop and mobile users browse the site differently though they were equally successful in completing the tasks. The study exposed …

Who Asked You? Consent, Self-Determination, And The Report Of The Pcc Ad Hoc Task Group On Gender In Name Authority Records, K. Adolpho

This book chapter discusses the Program for Cooperative Cataloging Ad Hoc Task Group on Gender in Name Authority Records report of recommendations on recording gender in name authority records. The author argues that, although the work of the Task Group is a well-intentioned attempt to mitigate trans-exclusion in RDA 9.7, their overall report and proposed best practices are rooted in Western-centric, cisnormative understandings of gender that deny gender diverse people both agency over their own identities and decision-making power over the frameworks that seek to include them.
