At a Founder’s Day banquet held in February 1924, Ange. V. Milner gave an address on the topic, "Normal Students of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” According to the news account, the 185 in attendance learned of Milner’s appreciation for past Illinois State students who achieved progress despite the struggles they faced. The account doesn’t reveal what she thought about current students, but indicated she felt students of the future would "probably follow in the footsteps of the students of 'Yesterday' and 'Today.' " In her almost 40-year career, Milner worked with many generations of students during a period of rapid …

Illinois State University has known five libraries in its 160-year history. From its humble origins in a 160-square foot space carved out from an entryway, to its current six-floor site, each library has offered improvements over its predecessor. The Gender-Inclusive Workgroup explored how VCU Libraries can better serve trans and gender-nonconforming users and staff. The group’s recommendations cover library spaces, staff, systems, services, and culture. Key recommendations include highlighting existing all-gender restrooms; building more gender-inclusive restrooms; expanding availability of menstrual products and disposal bins; continuing support for name-of-use changes in library systems; minimizing display of legal name in library systems; offering ongoing staff training in gender-inclusive language and customer service; and encouraging staff to share pronouns. The workgroup also recommends pursuing a culture of shared learning and inclusive thinking, with a reminder that gender identity is one facet …

When one thinks of war, horrible images of death and destruction come to mind. Among those images, children frequently are shown as victims. But there are many ways children can be affected by war, even when they are thousands of miles away from the actual conflict. This article exposes some of those effects on children in Smith County, Texas.

Collections are undergoing intense change and pressure from technology, budgetary uncertainties, and emerging perspectives on future approaches. Our case study -- drawn from our experiences as collections librarians -- examines these complex issues facing academic collections, large or small, across the profession. Through the development of “collections of distinction” within the local collection, collaborations and scholarly partnerships with colleagues and faculty, and advocacy for the importance of dedicated oversight to ensure that collections investments fulfill the academic mission, we explore possible solutions to the complicated issues defining contemporary collections practices.

However, research indicates that few libraries have formal professional development programs and there are mixed messages from library leaders regarding the necessity and importance of professional development. It is no secret that libraries always seem to be facing budget cuts and funding for professional development is often seen as a low priority. What Motivates The Authors Of Video Game Walkthroughs And Faqs? A Study Of Six Gamefaqs Contributors, Michael J. Hughes

Walkthroughs, also known as FAQs or strategy guides, are player-authored documents that provide step-by-step instructions on how to play and what to do in order to finish a given video game. Exegetical in their length and detail, walkthroughs require hours of exacting labor to complete. Yet authors are rarely compensated for work that markedly differs from other kinds of fan creativity. To understand their motivations, I interviewed six veteran GameFAQs authors, then inductively analyzed the transcripts. Open coding surfaced five themes attributable to each participant. Together, these themes constitute a shifting mix of motivations, including altruism, community belonging, self-expression, and …

Budget allocation decisions have become far more complex and difficult. One obvious reason is the shift from print to electronic purchases. This along with the lack of increased funding to sustain these collections has created a scenario in which all purchasing decisions need to be made with precise planning. This article examines the fund structure review conducted at the Trinity University Coates Library, which sought to identify best practices and better capture how much is being spent on resources beyond print and electronic. More specifically, the review sought to include open access (OA) resources into the fund structure.

In March 2015, Wilfrid Laurier University administration announced that WLU Press would be integrating with the Laurier Library. Media coverage of this announcement has been mixed, and is an indication of the ambivalent response to library-press collaborations or integrations, in both the university press and library communities. This article considers the WLU case at its current early stage of development, discussing this transformation not necessarily as “progress” but as one response to a rapidly shifting scholarly environment. By examining the pressure points of the negotiations to merge the press and the library at WLU, this article considers the question of …

The collections that comprise Twentieth-Century Global Perspectives,

covering 1941-1996, include primary sources from the Central

Intelligence Agency’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)

Daily Reports, 1941-1996 and its Joint Publications Research Service

(JPRS) Reports, 1957-1995. The online versions of these sources are

not consolidated anywhere else, making these collections invaluable

for researchers in the various disciplines covered. Weaknesses of the

database include the inability to search across all collections simultaneously,

the absence of help screens, and the inability to export to

bibliographic management tools such as RefWorks or Zotero.

Archivists have grappled with the processing and management challenges of congressional collections, but have spent less time exploring the use of these collections or their utility for research outside traditional topics and disciplines. This case study examines how two department projects produced new insights into congressional collections at an institution examining the importance of its political materials within its collection development policy. A survey of Native American collection materials led to a new understanding of the vast scholarly potential of congressional collections. Likewise, a general assessment of special collections revealed the popularity of congressional collections and the nature of their …

The achievement gap “refers to a difference between the academic achievement of linguistic and ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds, and female students, and either the mainstream student population in general or the white student population more specifically” (Odekon, 2015, p. 7). There are as many causative factors as there are rocks on a beach in Alaska. While books and articles may refer to these and act as a finding aid, I find it valuable to have a certain familiarity with federal, state, and nonprofit organizations that publish timely and authoritative research reports.
