Serving Students: The Legacy of Milner’s Library

In 1890, students were thrilled to discover their new library with “tables and chairs conveniently placed, and in every way possible the wants of the students anticipated.” Since 1892 each library space has included rooms devoted to reading, and as a result, the functionality and number of chairs have remained an important consideration in library designs. North Hall’s popularity as a student study space pointed to its severe deficiencies with “students sitting on the window sills….”

After Ange. V. Milner physically consolidated all the separate book collections into the reception room in Old Main, she began creating an inventory of the collection using this accession book purchased through Melvil Dewey’s company, the Library Bureau. Her first entries appear on Thursday, October 16, 1890.

As the first fulltime librarian, Ange. V. Milner had gone above and beyond her charged duties to “rearrange, classify, and catalogue” the collections. She created a library space conducive to study and expanded library hours from one day a week to Monday through Friday, eight hours a day. The course catalog indicated that a “librarian is always in attendance” in a “well-chosen library, carefully adapted to the needs of the school.” To better help students in their coursework she created 400 individual “reference sheets,” now better known as annotated bibliographies, to guide students in the use of the collection. Following Ange. V. Milner’s view of the library as a “social center,” the new building included a museum with four exhibit rooms and an art gallery in the basement. On the second floor students enjoyed an informal, relaxing atmosphere in both the Browsing Room with recreational reading and the sound-proof Carnegie Room with an electric Victrola (record player) and 1000 albums.

Serving Students: The Legacy of Milner’s Library

Ange. V. Milner was typically described as frail and by 1917 her poor health had impeded her ability to work. Her active work in the library officially ended on October 15, 1927. She died January 13, 1928. The University closed for her funeral held in the University (now Capen) Auditorium. Newspaper accounts report the auditorium was overflowing. The University was aware of its loss and the importance of her life on the campus, “Her record will long remain as one of the potent influences in the making of a great institution.”

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

This paper details a reputational threat to an American academic library where a viral social media post and associated negative comments misrepresented the institution and brand’s values. Immediately, the marketing librarian responsible for social media responded to the threat by engaging directly with the library consumers, sharing content and information with the broader online community, and reinforcing the library’s values and commitment to consumers. While the resolution to the crisis was mostly favourable, the event was unanticipated and invited a keen learning opportunity that is documented in this case study. As localized assessments confirm national findings that undergraduates struggle to integrate resources into research-based compositions effectively, data at one comprehensive public university indicate library sessions improve students’ ability to locate and evaluate information, but students continue to struggle with the “use” component of information literacy. This article presents a trilateral case study among librarians, faculty, and writing center administrators, emphasizing the intersection of programmatic partnerships, assessment, and pedagogical best practices. Our research shows a trilateral approach to information literacy increases efficacy and a sense of shared responsibility in support of student research where traditional bilateral approaches fall short.

While the business benefits of digital asset management are well-documented, the benefits and importance of digital preservation are not. Digital preservation is a sustained commitment to maintenance activities which require a system of plans, policies, and implementation workflows. Coordination across departments is helpful for digital asset management, but it is mandatory for digital preservation. The Montana Digital Preservation Working Group (DPWG) operated under a five-point plan for collaboration between organizations. The plan consisted of cultivating shared knowledge, assessing the current digital preservation landscape at each institution, advocating for the value of digital preservation, implementing digital preservation practices, and sustaining the …

The Bridgewater Improvement Association (BIA) was founded in 1901 as the Bridgewater Village Improvement Society. The organization’s original objective was to create a better town, both to look at and to live in. The original constitution stated the focus of the group: “the promotion of order, beauty, and public welfare.” Arthur C. Boyden, head of Bridgewater State Normal School from 1906 to 1933, was voted the first president of the BIA in 1901.

John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) was the sixth president of the United States, serving from 1825-1829. He had a long career in public service, including positions such as American statesman and diplomat, ambassador to foreign nations, and United States Senator and House Representative from Massachusetts. He was the son of John Adams, the second president of the United States. Adams was a strong supporter of social reform, with some of the areas of specific interest being public education, abolition, and temperance. Background: Although many libraries have offered 3D printing as a service or available technology, there is a lack of information on course-integrated programs for 3D printing in which the library played a primary role. Therefore, librarians at the Touro College School of Health Sciences began exploring 3D printing for inclusion in the occupational and physical therapy curriculum.

As change creates more uncertainty for library practitioners, graduate library education needs to explore how to best prepare students to manage ambiguity through new approaches to identifying and solving challenging problems. We advocate for incorporating design into graduate library education.

Toward A Design Epistemology For Librarianship, Rachel I. Clarke

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The design of information tools and services is an integral component of librarianship, yet American librarianship has self-identified as a social science for more than 100 years. This paper suggests an alternative epistemological perspective to the scientific tradition in librarianship: design epistemology. The paper discusses key elements that comprise design epistemology and presents examples of manifestations of these elements in librarianship. Analysis reveals that librarianship has much in common with design epistemology, yet the field lacks explicit acknowledgement of design as a fundamental epistemological framework. The paper concludes with a call for reconceptualizing librarianship as a design discipline.

Such is the case for Reddit, the online news sharing site that is also a forum for asking and answering questions. We studied learning practices found in ‘Ask’ subreddits AskScience, Ask_Politics, AskAcademia, and AskHistorians to develop a coding schema for informal learning.
