Post-Facts: Information Literacy And Authority After The 2016 Election, Stefanie Bluemle Apr 2018

Post-Facts: Information Literacy And Authority After The 2016 Election, Stefanie Bluemle

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This article addresses the challenge that post-truth politics poses to teaching authority in information literacy. First, it isolates an element of the post-truth phenomenon, an element it calls post-facts, to elucidate why teaching source evaluation is not, by itself, an antidote to fake news or other evidence of Americans’ media illiteracy. Second, it addresses the implications of post-facts politics for the concept of authority as defined by the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, drawing on the work of Patrick Wilson and Max Weber to illustrate which elements of authority librarians must rethink due to recent events.

Technology Supports For Individuals With Disabilities In New York State: A Survey Of Current Status, Margaret M. Laskowski, Dana R. Reinecke, Hsin-Liang Chen Apr 2018

Technology Supports For Individuals With Disabilities In New York State: A Survey Of Current Status, Margaret M. Laskowski, Dana R. Reinecke, Hsin-Liang Chen

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

This exploratory study examines the current use of instructional technology, and assistive technologies for support of individuals with learning disabilities as well as other disabilities in New York State.

The researchers used SurveyMonkey and postings on social media websites for various professional organizations to solicit responses to a questionnaire from individuals working with or caring for persons with disabilities. A small sample of responses (N=122) revealed barriers to the use of technology, as well as the preferred type and most convenient for persons with disabilities. School districts may want to use this survey with students, parents and community members.

An Exploration Into Archival Descriptions Of Lgbtq Materials, Erin Baucom Apr 2018

An Exploration Into Archival Descriptions Of Lgbtq Materials, Erin Baucom

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

While traditional archives have successfully diversified collecting scopes to include materials from marginalized communities, archivists have yet to examine whether the descriptions of these materials appropriately represent the communities of origin. In an effort to determine how discoverable LGBTQ collections are and if the terms used to describe LGBTQ individuals might be inaccurate and possibly harmful to the LGBTQ community, this article compares terms used by LGBTQ history project Web sites to describe gender and sexual identities to terms used in traditional archives to portray those same identities. This comparison reveals that the terms in finding aids are general and …

Reflections On Fake News, Librarians, And Undergraduate Research, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles Apr 2018

Reflections On Fake News, Librarians, And Undergraduate Research, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles

Praxis Publications

The recent explosion of “fake news” highlights the need for academic libraries to provide access to reliable information resources and for librarians to instruct students in using them effectively. Providing reliable resources with minimal barriers to access involves cooperation among librarians, publishers, and vendors; however, I suggest that there is tension between our mutual desires to satisfy student demands for instant and perfect results and to encourage them to become persistent and critical information seekers. Many tools exist to assist students in gaining background information and limiting search results, but ultimately none replace the need to develop and explore questions …

Preservation Perspectives: The Disaster Plan, Bill Stolz

University Libraries' Staff Publications

The winter and spring of 2018 certainly delivered a reminder to librarians and archivists about potential weather-related disasters in the workplace, and within our home collections. My last column focused on practical tips to prepare for and handle emergencies. Now we will focus on creating a disaster plan. If your institution does not have a plan in place, or if the plan has not been updated in three or more years, this is an excellent time to get to work.

In The Beginning... A Legacy Of Computing At Marshall University, Jack L. Dickinson, Arnold R. Miller Ed.E Apr 2018

In The Beginning... A Legacy Of Computing At Marshall University, Jack L. Dickinson, Arnold R. Miller Ed.E

Manuscripts

This book provides a brief history of the early computing technology at Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va., in the forty years: 1959-1999. This was before the move to Intel and Windows based servers. After installation of an IBM Accounting Machine in 1959, which arguably does not fit the modern definition of a computer, the first true computer arrived in 1963 and was installed in a room below the Registrar’s office. For the next twenty years several departments ordered their own midrange standalone systems to fit their individual departmental requirements. These represented different platforms from different vendors, and were not connected to …

Habits Of Mind In An Uncertain World, Craig Gibson, Trudi E. Jacobson Apr 2018

Habits Of Mind In An Uncertain World, Craig Gibson, Trudi E. Jacobson

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The current political and cultural polarization in the United States and other countries has significant implications for all educational institutions and for libraries and librarians. The interrelated issues of trust, credibility, and authority now present major challenges because of the uncertainty of the social media environment, competing information “bubbles,” and enduring cognitive biases. The accelerating fragmentation of the media and information ecosystems undermines communal understanding of large and complex issues that citizens must face. To address this profound societal challenge, academic librarians should collaborate with faculty members to create communities of inquiry for students—sustained “high impact practices” that address the …

Moving an idea into a research project can be a daunting task and the early stages of a project set the stage for success. This poster provides tips for novice and expert researchers to start strong. Poster topics help the researcher develop an idea with background reading, form an idea into a well-built research question, translate that question into a search strategy, determine the best tools for a literature search, employ advanced search techniques to locate the most relevant information, identify an appropriate journal in which to publish, and format the manuscript.
