Ya Banned Books Analysis, Amanda Birro, Jennifer Pappas, Briana Cimino Apr 2018

Ya Banned Books Analysis, Amanda Birro, Jennifer Pappas, Briana Cimino

Student Theses

Book banning or challenging is a complex issue, in which a person takes issue with a book in the library‟s collection, complains to the librarian, and sometimes demands that the book be removed from the collection entirely. Books for young adult audiences are especially at risk, and the reasons why these books are challenged or banned are numerous. By reading fifteen different young adult books from between the years of 1990 and 2016, the researchers performed a content analysis to look at the reasons why books may be challenged or banned. They also looked for trends or patterns in books …

Leadership Reflections: Resiliency In Library Organizations, Lisa Bodenheimer Apr 2018

Leadership Reflections: Resiliency In Library Organizations, Lisa Bodenheimer

Publications

Similar to individuals, organizations display characteristics that speak to qualities and abilities. Our guest writer, Lisa Bodenheimer, discusses a trait that is critical for library organizations during this period of constant change and transformation. Resiliency is the ability to rebound and flex as circumstances shift enabling an organization to thrive and adjust during difficult times. This skill is typically developed through experiences, but, as Ms. Bodenheimer outlines, organizations are able to strategize in order to build employee and organizational resilience. Such a proactive approach will enable a library organization to better weather challenging situations and times as difficulties will enviably …

The Indigenous Archive: Religion And Education In Eighteenth-Century Mexico, Mónica Díaz Apr 2018

The Indigenous Archive: Religion And Education In Eighteenth-Century Mexico, Mónica Díaz

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

This article argues that eighteenth-century native elites played a significant role in the larger intellectual scene of colonial Mexico by participating in the same debates as their creole and European counterparts. I contend that the documentation produced by native elites related to the indigenous schools (colegios), convents, and seminaries during the eighteenth century provides an important context for understanding the ways in which knowledge circulated between natives, creoles, and Europeans. In addition, when this "indigenous archive" is read in tandem with more traditional historiographical native sources, we can better appreciate the indigenous roots of the dominant narrative of …

Start With An Hour A Week: Enhancing Usability At Wayne State University Libraries, Maria T. Nuccilli, Elliot J. Polak, Alex Binno

Library Scholarly Publications

Instead of pursuing traditional testing methods, Discovery and Innovation at Wayne State University Libraries settled on an alternate path to user-centered design when redesigning our library website: running hour-long “guerrilla” usability tests each week for two semesters. The team found immediate successes with this simple, cost-effective method of usability testing, leading to similar redesign projects for other online resources. Emphasizing the importance of iterative design and continuous improvement, this article will detail the authors’ experience conducting short weekly tests, suggestions for institutions looking to begin similar testing programs, and low-stakes testing as a pathway to improved design for the library …

Terms Redefined: Developing The Combination Of Electronic Resource Management With Open Access Workflows, Jill Emery, Graham Stone, Peter Mccracken

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

While many librarians have developed mechanisms and structures for managing local scholarship separate from their standard resource management practices, the intersection of the two content streams is occurring at many institutions.

During the past decade, the presenters have dedicated themselves to capturing best practices of electronic resource management and mapping out paths for creating open access workflows. Join them for a lively discussion and interactive session where they outline ways to bring these two initiatives together and identify the teams needed.
