Oer Awareness, Advocacy, And Adoption: An Institutional Approach, Jaya Kannan, Chelsea Stone

Librarian Publications

Sacred Heart University (SHU) has launched a university-wide Open Educational Resources(OER) initiative with three goals in mind – reduce the cost of textbooks for students, increase access to course materials, and strengthen pedagogical effectiveness. SHU has made appreciable headway in the short span of one and a half years by formulating a vision, defining the goals, developing a plan of action, and implementing a pilot study to integrate open textbooks in two math courses. Although it is a nascent initiative, this presentation summarizing the lessons-learned will make a useful contribution to the OER academic discussion . The presentation will describe …

Investigating Security For Ubiquitous Sensor Networks, Alfredo J. Perez, Sherali Zeadally, Nafaa Jabeur

Information Science Faculty Publications

The availability of powerful and sensor-enabled mobile and Internet-connected devices have enabled the advent of the ubiquitous sensor network paradigm which is providing various types of solutions to the community and the individual user in various sectors including environmental monitoring, entertainment, transportation, security, and healthcare. We explore and compare the features of wireless sensor networks and ubiquitous sensor networks and based on the differences between these two types of systems, we classify the security-related challenges of ubiquitous sensor networks. We identify and discuss solutions available to address these challenges. Finally, we briefly discuss open challenges that need to be addressed …

Growing Stronger Regional Collections With Resource Sharing Data, Kate Ross, Kourtney Blackburn

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

How can libraries increase interlibrary loan effectiveness while harnessing existing purchase funds? This session offers an answer: We have partnered with the IDS Project and regional libraries to create coordinated, diverse collections based on ILL data (e.g. frequency a title was requested, regional holdings, collection building profiles). Participants are notified of potential purchases and corresponding data when items meet collection profiles. Currently, we’re working to establish ILL workflows for real-time coordinated collection development.

Library Guides: An Aggregation Of User Research From 1998 To 2017, David Vess Jun 2017

Library Guides: An Aggregation Of User Research From 1998 To 2017, David Vess

Libraries

A truly comprehensive search tool for resources provided by libraries will continue to be a distant dream until daunting technical challenges are addressed. A Google-like search experience is desirable in some contexts, but a case can be made that hiding subject-specific article databases behind a comprehensive search tool is a disservice to researchers.

Librarians have a long history of addressing the complex landscape of the various resources they offer by crafting guides to library collections. These guides provide direct links to resources while educating inexperienced researchers about discipline-specific databases. Unfortunately, this solution creates more complexities in the research resource landscape. …

Changing Publishing Ecologies: A Landscape Study Of New University Presses And Academic-Led Publishing: A Report To Jisc, Janneke Adema, Graham Stone, Chris Keene Jun 2017

Changing Publishing Ecologies: A Landscape Study Of New University Presses And Academic-Led Publishing: A Report To Jisc, Janneke Adema, Graham Stone, Chris Keene

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Introduction

A new wave of university presses is emerging. Common characteristics are that they are open access (OA), digital first, library-based, and they often offer a smaller set of services than a traditional publisher, blurring the line between publisher and platform. In tandem, a small but notable number of academics and researchers have set up their own publishing initiatives, often demonstrating an innovative or unique approach either in workflow, peer review, technology or business model.

These new publishing initiatives have a potentially disruptive effect on the scholarly communication environment, providing new avenues for the dissemination of research outputs and acting …

Claiming Expertise From Betwixt And Between: Digital Humanities Librarians, Emotional Labor, And Genre Theory, Alexis Logsdon, Amy Mars, Heather Tompkins Jun 2017

Claiming Expertise From Betwixt And Between: Digital Humanities Librarians, Emotional Labor, And Genre Theory, Alexis Logsdon, Amy Mars, Heather Tompkins

Staff Publications

Librarians' liminal (intermediate) position within academia situates us to make unique contributions to digital humanities (DH). In this article, we use genre theory, feminist theory, and theories of emotional labor to explore the importance of discourse mediation and affective labor to DH and the interplay between these areas and academic structural inequality. By claiming our expertise and making explicit work that is often not visible, we can advocate for new and varied roles for librarians in digital humanities. Our analysis is informed by both theory and practice, and it takes a dialogic approach that depends upon the interactions between the …

Decoding Virtual Reference: Using Chat Transcripts To Guide Usability Testing And Improve Web Design, Kate E. Wimer

Faculty Publications - George Fox University Library

Background and Aim

Given the importance of user-centered design in library websites and virtual reference environments, this study sought to utilize existing chat transcript data at the University of Denver library to build a framework of patron patterns and natural language in students asking reference questions.

Method

This study employed a word-cloud analysis on cleaned transcript data to identify patterns in student language and behavior when describing reference needs on the library website. Data from two consecutive fall quarters were analyzed separately and trends were identified by comparison.

Findings

This study identifies five top term/phrases in student chat transcript data: …

Embedding Peer Support As A Core Learning Skill In Higher Education, Philip Russell, Gerard Ryder, Martha Burton, Sarah Daly, Paul Quinn

Support services (Former ITT) - Articles

Abstract

Information, digital and academic literacy skills are more important than ever as the nature of global information streams becomes more complex and increasingly online. New methods are needed to ensure that students are taught to identify, use and critically evaluate this complex information myriad during their education and in their future careers. Peer assisted learning is one method that has been shown to help, and previous research in the field of peer support has indicated that the interaction between students at different levels enhances a first-year student’s successful transition into higher education (HE).

In 2016, a peer support scheme …

Developing New Streams Of Undergraduate Submissions, Debra J. Rodensky, Kadie J. Mullins, Wesley Lewis

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group 2017

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) has been successful in attracting faculty participation in Scholarly Commons, its institutional repository. Other than dissertations and theses, however, student submissions have been slow in coming, despite university priorities to support and disseminate undergraduate research. In early 2017, the scholarly communications staff at Hunt Library set out to change that picture. Energized by a Digital Commons webinar exploring approaches to highlighting undergraduate opportunities, they approached campus colleagues with a new venture – capturing the research experiences of students going abroad during the summer of 2017. The idea was enthusiastically embraced and within a short time, a …

Keynote1: Ethical Ux, Matthew Reidsma

Books and Contributions to Books

When the social critic Paul Goodman wrote that "technology is a branch of moral philosophy, not of science,” he meant that shaping the world through technology involved moral choices, concerned with how we ought to live. Our library UX work is no different. Our user research methods are moral choices that affect our users; The data we collect not only helps us, it is likely being stockpiled by vendors and advertisers to better understand our users. Our design decisions have ethical implications, too; By working to change our users' behavior, we prioritize our own version of what is 'right.' But …
