Selecting Link Resolver And Knowledge Base Software: Implications Of Interoperability, Cyndy Chisare, Jody C. Fagan, David J. Gaines, Michael Trocchia
Selecting Link Resolver And Knowledge Base Software: Implications Of Interoperability, Cyndy Chisare, Jody C. Fagan, David J. Gaines, Michael Trocchia
Libraries
Link resolver software and their associated knowledge bases are essential technologies for modern academic libraries. However, because of the increasing number of possible integrations involving link resolver software and knowledge bases, a library’s vendor relationships, product choices, and consortial arrangements may have the most dramatic effects on the user experience and back-end maintenance workloads. A project team at a large comprehensive university recently investigated link resolver products in an attempt to increase efficiency of back-end workflows while maintaining or improving the patron experience. The methodology used for product comparison may be useful for other libraries.

Evaluating Information: Where Do Librarians And Skeptics Align?, Evan Meszaros, Mandi Goodsett
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
Although librarians may not realize it, they have many shared goals and values with those who consider themselves “Skeptics.” The presenters of this poster intend to survey a variety of types of librarians who teach patrons how to evaluate sources. The survey will investigate the librarians’ knowledge of concepts in skepticism, awareness of resources available to skeptics, and general attitude towards those who consider themselves skeptics. The poster will synthesize and analyze the results of this survey to reveal where librarians and skeptics align, and how that alignment compares with the attitudes librarians have overall toward the skeptic community.
Data-Driven Public Diplomacy: A Critical And Reflexive Assessment, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor
Data-Driven Public Diplomacy: A Critical And Reflexive Assessment, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor
FIMS Publications
This essay presents a critical and reflexive assessment of contemporary efforts
to innovate the measurement and evaluation of public diplomacy. Analyzing a
recent and pivotal report called “Data-Driven Public Diplomacy,” it explains
how the institutional and ideological residue of the Cold War underwrites
these initiatives in the context of American activities in its contemporary “War
on Terror.” Inspired by Marx’s concept of the fetish—n under-represented
conceptual approach to public diplomacy research—he authors critique
the thinking of public diplomacy scholars and officials, arguing that both an
omnipresent past and a powerful form of technological fetishism are discernible
in the “Data-Driven Public …

Beyond Traditional Librarianship: Librarians’ Roles In An International Education And Exchange Program, Elizabeth Brown, Ping Fu, Ginny Blackson
Beyond Traditional Librarianship: Librarians’ Roles In An International Education And Exchange Program, Elizabeth Brown, Ping Fu, Ginny Blackson
Library Scholarship
This paper describes a case study of embedded librarianship at the James E. Brooks Library of Central Washington University (CWU). It discusses how librarians engaged teaching and learning through an international exchange and education program with a Chinese university and collaborated with the University English as Second Language (UESL) program at CWU in developing a UESL conditional admission proposal for graduate studies. Through reviewing the five stages of the engagement, milestones, and activities at each stage, using existing embedded librarianship concepts, and examining the embedded librarianship model developed by the librarians at CWU, this paper suggests that librarians develop methods …

PLACE Project
PLACE, the Position-based Library Archive Coordinate Explorer, is a University of New Hampshire geospatial data server and search interface that enables discovery of digital collections. Identifying geographic coordinates for “geospatial ready” digitized cultural heritage materials is key to the project.

Hyperlink management is critical to website functionality because a site with dead links is not fully operable for the end user. In educational institutions, links used for marketing, course materials, library resources, social media, and other uses can be laborious to maintain in a consistent fashion. Often links are long and unreadable. In order to streamline link maintenance and improve readability for end users, an open source short link manager called YOURLS was implemented at an academic library. In contrast to proprietary shortening services like bit.ly and ow.ly, YOURLS also operates as a link database manager. Long URLs are shortened …
