Harvesting And Parsing An Html-Based Newspaper, Eric Weig
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
This article outlines one in-house model for archiving and providing access to HTML-based news in the Kentucky Digital Newspaper Program (KDNP) at the University of Kentucky (UK). To allow for search and retrieval of HTML-based news in the KDNP which already contains news content digitized from analog sources, the encapsulation of HTML content using XML encoded CDATA strings read by a prototype open-source PHP viewer is described.

The Texas Digital Newspaper Program, operated by the University of North Texas Libraries, actively works to digitally preserve news in the form of print and born digital newspaper content via The Portal to Texas History. For two years, TDNP has partnered with the Texas Press Association to preserve born-digital newspaper titles from its member institutions. These PDF-based print masters total more than 3 million pages from over 500 titles across the state and allow UNT Libraries to explore significant metrics associated with born-digital newspaper content at a scale that previously had been impossible. This paper reports on exploratory investigations by …

Born Digital News Collections: Other Libraries Approaches, Elisa Villanueva, Jasper Faase
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
Nowadays most newspapers (or almost all of them) have a digital version or are definitely turning to digital. Furthermore, there are many news websites which provide news content. Additionally, with the rise of Web 2.0 many websites are based on user generated content, and others are almost built on the user’s posts and comments as their main sources.
Most of the libraries face challenges collecting, preserving ‘born digital’ news and newspapers which puts this part of our cultural heritage at risk. .The aim of this paper will be to present a desktop research into the approach other libraries or cultural …

Innovative Approaches Of Historical Newspapers: Data Mining, Data Visualization, Semantic Enrichment, Jean-Philippe Moreux, Caroline Kageneck
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
In this age of Big Data this paper describes how digital libraries can apply at large scale innovative approaches to better valorize and bring better experiences of old newspapers.
On the first hand, the state-of-the-art OLR (optical layout recognition) technique in one of the largest heritage press digitization projects in Europe (Europeana Newspapers, www.europeana-newspapers.eu, 2012-2015) was used in a data mining experiment. Data analysis was applied to quantitative metadata derived from a 850K pages subset of six XIXth-XXth c. French newspaper titles from the BnF collection. The METS/ALTO XML data was analyzed with data mining and data visualization techniques …
"Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish
"Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish
Libraries
This poster will present the assessment and intervention activities of individuals at a mid-sized academic library with respect to diversity personnel initiatives. Each year, library employees complete a survey designed to gauge satisfaction and areas for improvement. Qualitative data suggest that library staff are confused about definitions of diversity and/or lack requisite buy-in and interest in initiatives that address diversity concerns. The activities and outcomes of an intervention to address these issues will be discussed.

Born Digital Records Of Mexican Indigenous People: A Proposal To Preserve Sound And Audiovisual Documents Of Raramuri ́S Culture, Perla Olivia Rodríguez Reséndiz, Jaime Ríos Ortega, César Augusto Ramírez, Sylvie Marchand
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
Each day increases the amount of digital born sound and audiovisual documents as collections in libraries, archives and museums. However are unaware how these collections must be preserved for the future. Therefore, the risk of loss is increased. All types of sound and audiovisual recordings in risk if they are not documented and preserved properly, highlights the recordings of the indigenous peoples.
This is serious phenomenon because with the loss of an indigenous language will be lost knowledge, worldview, and the way of understanding the world of a social group. The diversity of the indigenous languages of Mexico as cultural …

A Cooperative Model For Preserving Historical Television News Content, Morgan Gieringer
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
The archival profession must begin to confront the many challenges inherent in the large-scale preservation of twentieth century audio/visual resources. A significant portion of our shared cultural heritage, including historical television news recordings, is at risk due to complicated copyright issues, degradation of the original media, the cost involved in digitizing audio/visual resources, and the difficulty of preserving high resolution digital video files. Cooperation between heritage institutions and content creators facilitated by a Custodial Partnership Model is the key to overcoming these significant challenges. The University of North Texas (UNT) and the Dallas/Fort Worth (Texas) affiliate station of the National …

"At Risk": An Analysis Of Newspaper Source Materials Digitized By U.S. And European Repositories, Maria Smith
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
In 2015, in cooperation with IFLA News Media Section, The Center for Research Libraries conducted an in-depth assessment of the outputs of the major newspaper digitization efforts in the U.S. and Europe. The purpose of the assessment was to identify the comparative strengths and gaps in the corpus of newspapers digitized to date, relative to the total body of newspapers held by libraries. The findings of that assessment revealed a number of areas where cooperative action was required by libraries to address the persistent limitations in our shared effort.
A key observation of that assessment was that the bulk of …

Wisconsin Model: Capturing Weekly Newspaper Websites, Ron Larson
Wisconsin Model: Capturing Weekly Newspaper Websites, Ron Larson
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
In 1845, members of the Wisconsin press led the charge to create a historical society and urged its fellow members to gather their respective newspapers each year and donate them to the society’s library.
An editor wrote, “A full collection of Territorial papers, neatly bound and preserved in the State library, we hardly need suggest, would be of the utmost importance for future reference. Come then, brethren, let us arrange ourselves cheek by jowl in some vacant alcove, that we may tell the wise ones that come after us, what happened in our day.”
This progressive way of thinking helped …

Library Faculty & Staff Publications
As international efforts to develop guidelines for data management emerge, the need for monitoring data deposit compliance increases. Utah State University has a team of university administrators, IT specialists, and librarians that addresses research data management issues. They developed a process to receive reports from faculty with successful grants that ultimately allows creation of records for data. Research grants are tracked though all stages and information about data and publications shared publicly on platforms capable of contributing scholarly work to research outputs aggregators (such as Share) and also to public facing bibliographic aggregators like Worldcat.

Strengthening Resource Sharing Through Community Driven Development And Innovation, Shannon W. Pritting, William E. Jones Iii, Michael C. Mulligan
Milne Library
Resource sharing is an area in libraries with intense focus on cooperation and innovation. Libraries dedicate themselves to sharing collections to enhance access far beyond what any one library could offer. Resource sharing involves connecting not only users to collections, but connecting many different library technologies. An effective and innovative resource sharing group requires both a commitment to community, but also a commitment to developing technology that can help achieve the group’s goals. The IDS Project is a community-based resource sharing development cooperative whose members are tightly connected through professional development and high-level support initiatives such as the Online Learning …

Inducing Application Of Interdisciplinary Frameworks: Experiences From The Domains Of Information Literacy And Responsible Conduct Of Research, Anne E. Leonard, Jean E. Hillstrom
Publications and Research
Constructivist frameworks for information literacy and research ethics can be developed and nurtured in the context of an interdisciplinary course. Using the frameworks of two disciplines, students went on an experiential journey in support of ethics foundations through guest lectures and active learning exercises. This study describes the development and content of the responsible conduct of research and information literacy modules and discusses the role of each in an interdisciplinary course. Learning goals for both modules were evaluated by examining student responses in a free-writing exercise at the end of the semester, concluding with a discussion of the structural and …
Ways That Information Can Be Good, Mark Lenker
Ways That Information Can Be Good, Mark Lenker
Library Faculty Presentations
Evaluating information is fundamentally a matter of judging an information source according to its value. Current practice in library instruction is somewhat limited insofar as it equates the value of information with credibility or usefulness in a persuasive argument. Philosopher Richard Kraut proposes a theory of value that links a thing's goodness to its capacity to promote well-being. Applying this idea to information, I argue that information is most valuable when it disrupts our current ways of thinking and feeling and leads us to consider new possibilities. We need to incorporate this aspect of value into our current strategies for …

This poster presentation demonstrates the workflow processes of a cataloging project for motion picture publicity materials at the BYU Library. In June 2015, the Library established a new policy on cataloging published materials in archival collections to provide better discovery for researchers. The first focus area for implementing this policy was a large collection of movie posters and other published items within our Arts and Communications collections. Under the policy, these materials are being individually cataloged. The poster outlines the decision-making process throughout the project regarding metadata standards, arrangement, classification scheme, and other relevant aspects of providing access to these …

This poster is an example of the work I have created using cataloging statistics from Sierra, Google Sheets, and Excel. The graphs illustrate the number of books I have cataloged and discarded throughout a span of years. The graphs tell a story with the numbers. This is called a statistical narrative. These stories can be created by any library department and ultimately allow outsiders, and constituents to see the value of the academic library.

"Capstone Officials" And Public Records: Risk, Buy-In, And Archival Selection, Ruth E. Bryan
Library Presentations
Use of records schedules as appraisal tools works well for routine records held by low-level employees in public institutions. Records created by top-level public officials, however, can be more challenging to schedule. Using NARA's recent definition of "capstone officials" as a starting concept, panelists representing public universities and state and federal governments present case studies from their own institutions dealing with policy creation for capstone officials' records, records schedules and public records laws, and archival selection.
