Georgia’s public libraries have a rich history demonstrating the commitment of Georgia’s leaders and citizenry to free access to information. This updated timeline is a compilation of historical data on public libraries in Georgia and a history of the Georgia Public Library Service and shows the development of Georgia’s libraries from small collections, sometimes in people’s homes, to the diverse collections of multiple media we have access to today. It begins with the first known subscription library created in Savannah and ends with the current status of public library service in the state.

From Basement Storage To Online Access: Processing And Digitizing The Mathematical Association Of America General Mathematics Film Production Elements, Justin Kovar

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

A two-part case study of a film project processed and digitized by an archival institution, from the planning stages through online access. Using a single title, "The Kakeya Problem," as an entry point, these videos detail the process of shipping, identifying, rehousing, describing, and digitizing a film collection, with a focus on the rationale that shaped these processes at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.

Art Of Defiance: Found Footage, Legal Provenance, And The “Aesthetics Of Access”, Claudy W. Op Den Kamp

This essay focuses on the artistic practice of found footage filmmaking—defined as the practice of creating new films with extant material—and the relation of found footage filmmaking to Lucas Hilderbrand’s 2009 concept of “aesthetics of access”. A focus on legal provenance of the source material, as well as techniques of circumvention that are used when obtaining material for compilation, will be used to analyze the aesthetic form of found footage films, both within and outside an institutional archive context. Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Special Collections in Performing Arts (SCPA) at University of Maryland Libraries collects performing arts materials that preserve performance practice, instruction, and scholarship, including the full scope of audiovisual (AV) formats. The Liz Lerman Dance Exchange Archives at SCPA contains, among common print archival materials, a significant number of AV materials. This collection is examplar of the numerous challenges facing AV digitization and preservation projects in university libraries and archives, including determining metadata standards and best practices, describing at the appropriate level, handling technical and personnel issues, and working with vendors. Content Blocking And The Patron As Situated Knower: What Would It Take For An Internet Filter To Work?, Richard Fry, Emily Lawrence

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Librarians often object to Internet filters on the grounds that filters are prone to overblocking and underblocking. This argument implies that a significant problem with contemporary filters is that they are insufficiently fine-grained. In this article, we posit that present-day filters will always be conceptually capable of failure, regardless of how granular their content analysis becomes. This is because, we argue, objections to content are best understood as objections to problematic inter- actions between content and particular knowers. We import the concept of the situated knower from feminist epistemology to capture the heterogeneous, socially embedded nature of patrons, about whom …

Introduction: Peer-review practices in scholarly publishing are changing. Digital publishing mechanisms allow for open peer review, a peer review process that discloses author and reviewer identities to one another. This model of peer review is increasingly implemented in scholarly publishing. In science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines, open peer review is implemented in journal publishing processes, and, in the humanities and social sciences, it is often coupled with new scholarship practices, such as the digital humanities. The John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens Collection documents the research of John S. Stokes Jr. and the history and activities of the Mary’s Gardens movement, a popular Catholic movement related to planting devotional gardens dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This article provides an overview of this collection and a discussion on archival management, preservation, and outreach.
