Moving Forward: Enhancing Preservation Of And Access To Oral Histories At Unlv University Libraries, Karla Irwin

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

The Oral History Research Center (OHRC) at University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries holds recordings for over three thousand oral history interviews stored on audio cassette tapes and removable media. With the establishment of a new Technical Services department in Special Collections in 2014 came the opportunity to standardize description and enhance access and preservation of the audio and transcript files. A multi-phase approach has been employed to address legacy interviews, including a cassette digitization outsourcing project as well as procedures for preserving and providing access to the born-digital interviews. Creating A Library Holding Group: An Approach To Large System Integration., Isaac R Huffman, Heather J Martin, Barbara (Basia) Delawska-Elliott

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

PURPOSE: Faced with resource constraints, many hospital libraries have considered joint operations. This case study describes how Providence Health & Services created a single group to provide library services.

METHODS: Using a holding group model, staff worked to unify more than 6,100 nonlibrary subscriptions and 14 internal library sites.

RESULTS: Our library services grew by unifying 2,138 nonlibrary subscriptions and 11 library sites and hiring more library staff. We expanded access to 26,018 more patrons.

CONCLUSIONS: A model with built-in flexibility allowed successful library expansion. Although challenges remain, this success points to a viable model of unified operations.

Business analytics, defined as the use of data to make better, more relevant, evidence-based business decisions, has received a great deal of attention in practitioner circles. Organizations have adopted business analytics in an effort to improve revenue, product placement, and customer satisfaction. Professional sports teams are no different. The podcast has become a pervasive mode of cultural knowledge production— at turns a public radio echo chamber, an alternative to old-fashioned reading, and a trendy vehicle for commentary, comedy, and news. While podcasting is not typically a medium associated with literacy, a podcast assignment presents an opportunity for instruction librarians to harness students’ interest in media production and embed critical digital and information literacy skills in their classrooms. Through podcasting, students actively engage in public cultural dialogues, create and share unique digital artifacts, leverage their previous experiences as “content consumers and producers,” and apply knowledge and skills they’ve learned …

Analysis Of Media In Rwanda: Internship With The New Times, Rhiannon Snide

This report examines the effects and expectations of media in Rwanda today, specifically in reference to the New Times daily newspaper. I spent one month interning with the New Times as a news writer, spending approximately 45 to 50 hours a week with the institution. Within this month, I was able to use both primary research and secondary research to analyze the role of media in Rwanda’s society today. Interviews with head editors of the New Times and conversations with paid journalists from the New Times provided me with much of the information specific to the news outlet, while desk …

During the 1970s and 1980s, archivists and historians discussed, in their literature, the ways that oral histories could be used to fill in the documentary record with stories from all parts of society, not just stories from white men of means, whose stories often were retained as part of business, government, and university records. This article analyzes pieces from the journal The American Archivist to determine how frequently archivists actually published about using oral history techniques to document people of color, women, the working class, and other consistently underdocumented populations. Image As Evidence: A Citation Analysis Of Visual Resources In American History Scholarship, 2010–2014, Jillian M. Ewalt

Marian Library Faculty Publications

The author examines the use of visual resources in American history scholarship over a five-year period. The article reports on a citation analysis of 554 images published in two top American history journals from 2010 through 2014. The data collected in this study documents the extent to which images were used in history research and the types of libraries and archival repositories from which historians accessed images. Based on the study data, the article explores characteristics of frequently cited libraries and archival repositories, the capacity in which images function as historical evidence, and implications for libraries based on the findings.
