School Library Advocacy Success- Perceptions In Context, Elizabeth Burns Jan 2016

School Library Advocacy Success- Perceptions In Context, Elizabeth Burns

STEMPS Faculty Publications

School librarians must be able to articulate the value of the educational impact they have on students and do so in a manner that is meaningful to their stakeholders (Kirkland, 2012). Little research (Ewbank, 2011; Haycock, 2003; Oberg, 2006) exists examining effective advocacy practices or the perceptions of school library programs by stakeholders when school librarians are strong advocates for their programs. This study addresses this gap and explores perceived advocacy success by school librarians, as well as their stakeholders, and the strategies implemented to gain support for the school library program. This study employed a mixed method explanatory research …

An activity often reserved for children, coloring books for adults rose from hipster trend to global phenomenon beginning in 2013. Participants reported enjoying the tactile, interactive nature of the books as a respite from constant screen time. Coloring books became big business for craft suppliers and bookstores by 2015. Coloring books shot to the top of the Best Sellers list on Amazon and were prominently displayed in book …

In 2015 both FHSU and PSU purchased and launched bepress Digital Commons (DC), a more robust repository. If you seek global discoverability, …

Wild Bill Hickok Gets His Kicks: Expanding Collection Development Through Intentional Collaboration, David Richards, Thomas A. Peters Jan 2016

Wild Bill Hickok Gets His Kicks: Expanding Collection Development Through Intentional Collaboration, David Richards, Thomas A. Peters

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Various cultural memory institutions ( academic libraries, history museums, public libraries, art museums, state agencies, even theme parks) in the metropolitan area around Springfield, Missouri, have been partnering and collaborating for decades in many ways. The collaboration was primarily intentional but at times organic or opportunistic, and revolved around a local history collection strategy. The collaborative efforts expanded geographically beginning with a local history museum and culminating with a partnership to document a legendary national highway from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. A shared central premise based on preserving and providing access to a city's unique history and place …

Learning From Teaching: A Dialogue Of Risk And Reflection, Anne Jumonville Graf Jan 2016

Learning From Teaching: A Dialogue Of Risk And Reflection, Anne Jumonville Graf

Library Faculty Research

Librarians have not always included discussions of reflective practice as part of our formal, published literature. In fact, in 2005 John Doherty claimed that librarians are not particularly reflective practitioners in general. However, since then there have been reviews of the status of reflection practice across librarianship, calls for more critical reflective practice, examples of that practice, and a variety of models, examples, and frameworks for reflective strategies in library instruction. In this chapter, my focus is on ways that critical reflection can enhance our ability to learn through teaching, especially when our teaching practice involves valuing the voices and …

Food For Thought: Should Libraries Partner With Nonlibrary Search Engine Providers For Their Opacs And Discovery Layers?, Michelle Wu Jan 2016

Food For Thought: Should Libraries Partner With Nonlibrary Search Engine Providers For Their Opacs And Discovery Layers?, Michelle Wu

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since the development of integrated library systems (ILS) in the 1970s, the focus of developers and librarians has been on the “integrated” aspect, but with the advances in technology, the time has come for libraries to consider whether a disaggregated system would better benefit their users. This article seeks to make the argument that the design of a user-friendly public interface to library systems is ideal for partnerships with the broader search engine industry; such an approach would enable participants to harness their respective strengths while simultaneously limiting the effect of their deficiencies

The Need For A Teacher Librarian To Take A Leadership Role In The Implementation Of Supplemental Reading Program Initiatives To Achieve Desired Student Outcomes, Mindy M. Reimer

Graduate Research Papers

Education stakeholders recognize the importance of establishing a culture of reading within a school. Many schools are using supplemental reading programs, like Accelerated Reader (AR), to support reading instruction and to encourage independent reading opportunities with their students (What Works Clearinghouse, 2010). These programs offer schools a system to manage, monitor and measure students’ independent reading. The high percentage of schools in the nation implementing supplemental reading programs necessitates that school librarians serve a leadership role in the implementation of such reading programs. Although these programs often entail controversy, proper implementation of these reading programs requires structure and support best …

A Knowledge Analytic Comparison Of Cued Primitives When Students Are Explaining Predicted And Enacted Motions, Victor R. Lee Jan 2016

A Knowledge Analytic Comparison Of Cued Primitives When Students Are Explaining Predicted And Enacted Motions, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The Knowledge in Pieces theoretical perspective posits p-prims as an important knowledge element in intuitive reasoning. Because p-prims are a class of knowledge elements developed and abstracted from everyday physical experiences, it seems plausible that immediate physical experiences, both in terms of sensations and actual observations of motion, would cue knowledge in different ways than when those experiences are just discussed as hypotheticals. This paper presents two cases to show that immediate embodied experiences with everyday objects does change which p-prims are cued and how they are deployed by students to explain situations involving motion. These cases come from a …

Moving Students To The Center Through Collaborative Documents In The Classroom, Maura A. Smale, Stephen Francoeur Jan 2016

Moving Students To The Center Through Collaborative Documents In The Classroom, Maura A. Smale, Stephen Francoeur

Publications and Research

Collaborative document creation allows groups of people to create and edit text in a shared space, and educators across all subject areas have embraced these tools in their classes. Library instructors are no exception—the authors have used collaborative documents with students in multiple instructional settings. We believe that collaborative documents can embody critical pedagogy in the library classroom. Creating and editing collaborative documents can acknowledge students’ prior experiences with research and the library and de-center the library instructor as the sole research expert in the room.
