Bringing Scholars To The Limelight: Publicizing An Institutional Repository Amongst Faculty And Students, Carrie B. Levinson, Melissa Spangenberg, Shawn Manning

Touro University Libraries Publications and Research

Touro Scholar, the institutional repository (IR) of the Touro College and University System (TCUS) and New York Medical College (NYMC), officially launched in April 2016, utilizing bepress’s Digital Commons repository platform. The IR is an online archive of scholarly output of an institution –in this case TCUS and NYMC. After assessing institutional knowledge of the scholarly benefits of depositing work in the repository, the libraries planned to create a concrete game plan to establish buy-in to Touro Scholar. Handouts, presentations, customized guides, liaison outreach, tutorials, and webinars were proposed methods of advertising the repository.

Digital Literacy: Why It Matters, Allison Kavanagh, K.C. O'Rourke

Journal Articles

In the past two decades the internet, email, apps, mobile devices and all associated hardware and software have become firmly embedded in everyday life, to the extent that it often feels that we have had no control over this phenomenon. What are the implications for education?

Primary and secondary students today have grown up with the always-connected life which the internet has enabled. However, the credence given to the idea that this makes them fully comfortable and aware as "digital natives" is misguided. The social implications of the internet society – surveillance and the decline of privacy, cyberbullying and so …

Documenting Your Institution's Patents: A Case Study From Clemson University, Jan Comfort Jan 2016

Documenting Your Institution's Patents: A Case Study From Clemson University, Jan Comfort

Publications

R.M. Cooper Library at Clemson University is a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC). In 2013, we embarked upon a project to add access to Clemson patents to TigerPrints (our Institutional Repository) and to our online catalog. The steps that we took can be followed by anyone who is interested in showcasing patents associated with their own institution. I focused on using free, widely-available resources, so there is no need to rely on databases that are only available at a PTRC, although these resources can be very helpful.

Final Report: Eunis – Eurocris Joint Survey On Cris And Ir, Lígia Ribeiro, Pablo De Castro, Michele Mennielli Jan 2016

Final Report: Eunis – Eurocris Joint Survey On Cris And Ir, Lígia Ribeiro, Pablo De Castro, Michele Mennielli

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The rising strategic importance of Current Research Information Systems (CRISs) and Institutional Repositories (IRs) for higher education and research institutions relates to the need to foster research and innovation and to provide a faster and broader technology transfer to industry and society. These are critical factors for global competitiveness, and the increasing competition among institutions to increase and disseminate excellence in research is another area where these systems provide a key contribution. Additional important elements with a strong impact on such strategic evolution are the new policies on Open Access, National Research Assessment and Research Funding. It is indeed from …

Musical Pop-Ups: Performances In Unexpected Places For National Poetry Month, 2015, Michael J. Duffy Iv

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Three faculty librarians, the communication coordinator, and the metadata and digital resources coordinator of the Western Michigan University Libraries arranged events for the celebration, including instrumental and vocal music performances. We aimed to include as many performers from as many units on campus as we could in order to increase the University Libraries’ visibility, and to make diverse campus units aware of the kinds of performances done in other parts of the University.

The musical performances were mostly informal performances that took place in unexpected venues, or what we called “pop-up” events, but we had a formal, concert-style musical performance …

Measuring Altruistic Impact: A Model For Understanding The Social Justice Of Open Access, Margaret Heller, Franny Gaede Jan 2016

Measuring Altruistic Impact: A Model For Understanding The Social Justice Of Open Access, Margaret Heller, Franny Gaede

Scholarship and Professional Work

INTRODUCTION Traditional assessment of ways in which open access initiatives and institutional repositories have provided a return on investment normally use pragmatic measures such as download counts and citation benefits. This pragmatic approach misses out on the powerful altruistic impact of improving access to international and/or marginalized communities. Using a frame of social justice, this article considers the importance of developing altruistic measures of repositories, particularly for institutions with missions specifically related to social justice and related themes. METHODS Using web analytics data for search keywords from eight institutions and geographic usage data from nine institutions, the authors were able …

Research Support Services In Agriculture, Megan Sheffield Jan 2016

Research Support Services In Agriculture, Megan Sheffield

Publications

In 2016, Clemson University Libraries (CUL) participated in a study through Ithaka S+R about research support services in the field on agricultural research. Eight researchers in Clemson University’s Department of Agricultural Sciences participated in a semi-structured interview (see Appendix) with the library liaison to the life sciences. Responses were transcribed and coded to identify themes and ways the library can further support agricultural research at CU.

The first major theme identified was that agricultural research overlaps with a stunning variety of subject areas and, as such, the research methods vary extensively. The projects are also widely collaborative with other departments …

Institutional Repositories In The Czech Republic, Kelci Baughman Mcdowell Jan 2016

Institutional Repositories In The Czech Republic, Kelci Baughman Mcdowell

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

This research project examines the use of institutional repositories (IRs) by academic and research institutions in the Czech Republic. Six Czech institutional repositories are examined in context with the open access (OA) movement in the US and Europe in order to identify what goals have been achieved, what challenges lie ahead, and how the IR functions within the academic ecosystem. IR development in the Czech Republic has been driven by a government statute to provide electronic access to theses and dissertations (ETDs), yet five out of the six IRs hold more content than ETDs alone. Despite not being totally OA, …

Opportunities And Challenges In The Use Of Personal Health Data For Health Research, Matthew J. Bietz, Cinnamon S. Bloss, Scout Calvert, Job G. Godino, Judith Gregory, Michael P. Claffey, Jerry Sheehan, Kevin Patrick Jan 2016

Opportunities And Challenges In The Use Of Personal Health Data For Health Research, Matthew J. Bietz, Cinnamon S. Bloss, Scout Calvert, Job G. Godino, Judith Gregory, Michael P. Claffey, Jerry Sheehan, Kevin Patrick

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Objective: Understand barriers to the use of personal health data (PHD) in research from the perspective of three stakeholder groups: early adopter individuals who track data about their health, researchers who may use PHD as part of their research, and companies that market self-tracking devices, apps or services, and aggregate and manage the data that are generated.

Materials and Methods: A targeted convenience sample of 465 individuals and 134 researchers completed an extensive online survey. Thirty-five hourlong semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with a subset of 11 individuals and 9 researchers, as well as 15 company/key informants.

Results: Challenges to …
