Now our provision of personalized access to Adobe Creative Cloud for all students and faculty is again reorienting library spaces and practices with a focus on User Experience (UX). This paper explores: 1) the relation of UXD to library research and instruction. 2) an ecology for …

Of The People, By The People, For The People: Critical Pedagogy And Government Information, Melanie Maksin

Library Staff Publications

This chapter focuses on pedagogical frames and techniques that encourage student engagement and problematize the process-and-product model of government information. These strategies reflect four interconnected ideas, namely

• that government information is political,

• that access to government information is political,

• that government information has value both in scholarly contexts and in individuals’ daily lives, and

• that we can intervene in the production and dissemination of government information.

Search Committees: When Members Disagree On The Relative Importance Of Candidate Qualifications, Robert P. Holley Jan 2016

Search Committees: When Members Disagree On The Relative Importance Of Candidate Qualifications, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

A factor not often mentioned in advice to job hunters is that members of search committees may be looking for different types of candidates even with an agreed upon job description and may also have dissimilar views on the importance of the search. This article describes a role playing exercise that I devised to demonstrate this point in my management class. The five members of the search committee, each representing a librarian stereotype, must decide between two candidates with diametrically opposed skills. Candidates will learn that this factor means that no one set of qualifications may satisfy everyone on the …

Report From The “What Is Open?” Workgroup, Rick Anderson, Seth Denbo, Diane J. Graves, Susan Haigh, Steven Hill, Martin Kalfatovic, Roy Kaufman, Catherine Murray-Rust, Kathleen Shearer, Dick Wilder, Alicia Wise

Library Faculty Research

The scholarly community’s current definition of “open” captures only some of the attributes of openness that exist across different publishing models and content types. Open is not an end in itself, but a means for achieving the most effective dissemination of scholarship and research. We suggest that the different attributes of open exist along a broad spectrum and propose an alternative way of describing and evaluating openness based on four attributes: discoverable, accessible, reusable, and transparent. These four attributes of openness, taken together, form the draft “DART Framework for Open Access.” This framework can be applied to both research artifacts …

The San Jose Gateway PhD program is a doctoral partnership between the School of Information at San Jose State University (SJSU) in the USA, and the Information Systems School at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia. Because of Californian legislation, SJSU has not been able to offer PhD degrees. The Gateway Program therefore provides a research pathway for SJSU’s coursework students. It also helps the School to grow the research capacity of academic staff. For QUT, the Program provides the opportunity to advance research agendas and to build strong international connections and partnerships. The Program began in 2008. …

Discovering The Knowledge Monopoly Of Law Librarianship Under The Dikw Pyramid, Alex Zhang Jan 2016

Discovering The Knowledge Monopoly Of Law Librarianship Under The Dikw Pyramid, Alex Zhang

Scholarly Articles

This article uses the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom (DIKW) pyramid to help identify the exclusive knowledge base and practical skills that law librarians must possess to solve practical problems. Paragraphs 4–24 trace the historical debates on whether law librarianship is a profession, which focus on autonomy as a key component of a profession. The consensus is that autonomy boils down to two major issues: identifying problems and providing solutions through exclusive methods that are restricted to a profession. Both require a solid and exclusive abstract knowledge base. Paragraphs 25–77 discuss the epistemological approaches employed thus far to identify a knowledge basis for library …

Review Of The Palgrave Handbook Of Global Philanthropy, Anthony Raymond

Staff publications, research, and presentations

This 2015 addition to the Palgrave Social Science Handbook series has the goal of providing a framework for understanding “how to shape a society with the best conditions for philanthropic giving”. In their introduction Wiepking and Handy refer to the eight mechanisms that drive people to make philanthropic donations which they distilled from a literature review of more than 500 empirical articles. While much in known about individual motivations for philanthropic donation to nonprofit organizations the current work sets out to build on this knowledge and provide a framework for understanding “the conditions under which people are more, or less, …

Review Of The Minimum Wage: A Reference Handbook, Anthony Raymond

Staff publications, research, and presentations

The Minimum Wage: A Reference Handbook. Edited by Oren M. Levin-Waldman. Santa Barbara, CA: ABC-CLIO, 2016. 354 p. $58 hardcover (ISBN: 978-1-4408-3394-6), $58 (1 user) e-book (978-1-4408-3395-3).

Debate among economists over the theoretical and actual efficacy of a minimum wage seems as intense today as it ever was and in the American political arena the debate continues to be contentious and sharply divided along party lines. While not a completely balanced treatment, this recent addition to ABC-CLIO’s Contemporary World Issues series is notable because it provides essential background on the struggle for, and against, a minimum wage law that is …
