Part II of the University of Central Florida Libraries hosted research lifecycle session at THATCamp Florida 2016. The Research Lifecycle at UCF presents a unified model of campus-wide support and services available to UCF researchers. This model was designed by the UCF Libraries’ Research Lifecycle Committee with inspiration from OpenWetWare’s Research Cycle. This presentation aims to explore the services and resources that UCF Libraries currently provides to researchers, while exploring how digital humanities research, specifically, can utilize such tools.

A Comparative Study Of User Experience Between Physical Objects And Their Digital Surrogates, Anastasia S. Varnalis-Weigle Feb 2016

A Comparative Study Of User Experience Between Physical Objects And Their Digital Surrogates, Anastasia S. Varnalis-Weigle

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Librarians and archivists have embraced innovative technologies in providing users a way to engage with collections. This engagement is increased through various forms of social media “sharing,” which broadens cultural institutions' visibility to new or remote users. While we make strides in designing new ways to access digital collections, the question remains: what are users losing in sensory (sight, touch, sound, smell) and emotional experience at the digital level? A phenomenological approach consisting of observation and semi-structured interviews was used to investigate user experience with physical objects and their digital surrogates. Students, faculty, and staff from a large academic institution …

The Perfect Storm: Examining User Experience And Conducting A Usability Test To Investigate A Disruptive Academic Library Web Site Redevelopment, Darren Chase, Elizabeth Trapasso, Robert Tolliver

Library Faculty Publications

The researchers conducted a task-based usability test of the effectiveness of online research beginning on the library Web site homepage. The participants included five university faculty members, six graduate students, and six undergraduate students. All participants reported feeling satisfied with their overall research experience, though most were unable to effectively complete all the research tasks of the test. The researchers identified weaknesses in the approach and process of many participants, and overall usability issues of the library discovery tool and other library Web site pages and research interfaces. Findings indicate the need to strategically incorporate self-service information literacy and research …

Oai-Pmh Harvested Collections & User Engagement, Deeann Allison

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Discovery tools are used in libraries to bring together books, articles, and other resources. Research has focused on user and librarian evaluation of these tools, but there are few evaluations of non-book and non-article sources. Discovery tools can also include metadata for local collections harvested through the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Creating these harvests can be time consuming for staff, so it is important for libraries to understand if and how patrons use these records. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries (UNL Libraries) harvests metadata from local collections into the Encore discovery tool. A study was conducted …

Getting My Feet Wet, Jake A. Farias Feb 2016

Getting My Feet Wet, Jake A. Farias

Blogging the Library

In the past two weeks, I have become much more comfortable at the Research Help Desk. I have been asked a whole variety of questions, from printing to citation to looking for books and articles. Despite a few challenging requests, I feel more confident in answering difficult research questions (which is good, because next week I’ll be working my first solo shift!). I will miss working with staff members at the Desk, largely because I enjoyed chatting with them about research skills, politics, sports, or anything that piqued our interests. [excerpt]

Starting At The Research Help Desk, Jake A. Farias

Blogging the Library

I have just completed my second week at the Research Help Desk and feel as though I am starting to get a good handle of the work. Even after our intense boot camp training, I felt nervous to start fielding questions. But after working through printer issues, citations, and some source searches with patrons, I am feeling more and more comfortable every day. With that said, I still have loads more to learn in the next few weeks. [excerpt]

Making Reference Personal: Student And Faculty Outreach Through Personal Research Sessions, Jennifer L.A. Whelan

Staff publications

While academic reference desks are seeing fewer visitors, the information environment is becoming increasingly complex. We know that students (and faculty) continue to have higher-level research needs that they are not bringing to traditional service points. At the same time, academic librarians often find themselves struggling to provide sustainable and meaningful research support. How can we reach a critical mass of students, while also respecting not only our own workloads but also those of faculty increasingly pressed for instructional time? The libraries at College of the Holy Cross are working to meet this challenge with a consultation-based Personal Research Session …

The Anchor, Volume 129.16: February 10, 2016, Hope College

The Anchor: 2016

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Introducing An Automated Subject Classifier, Pru Mitchell, Tine Grimston, Robert Parkes Feb 2016

Introducing An Automated Subject Classifier, Pru Mitchell, Tine Grimston, Robert Parkes

Information Management

The library community understands the value of controlled vocabularies in enhancing resource discovery. There is however ongoing tension between that value and the cost of maintaining and applying specialist vocabularies. This paper presents the outcomes of a 2014-15 trial of automated subject indexing at the Australian Council for Educational Research. The integration of a machine learning classification tool has resulted in streamlined workflows and increased use of machine-readable data. Insights were gained into the decisions human indexers make in using a controlled vocabulary, and into the importance of quality abstracts and metadata.

Coding By Choice: A Transitional Analysis Of Social Participation Patterns And Programming Contributions In The Online Scratch Community, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai, Michael T. Giang

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

While massive online communities have drawn the attention of researchers and educators on their potential to support active collaborative work, knowledge sharing, and user-generated content, few studies examine participation in these communities at scale. The little research that does exist attends almost solely to adults rather than communities to support youths’ learning and identity development. In this chapter, we tackle two challenges related to understanding social practices that support learning in massive social networking forums where users engage in design. We examined a youth programmer community, called Scratch.mit.edu, that garners the voluntary participation of millions of young people worldwide. We …

An Appraisal Of Open Access Utilization Among Academic Librarians In Federal Universities In Northwestern States Of Nigeria, Aminu Umar Musa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

With the proliferation of literature on Open access (OA), extensive literature can be found focusing on issues relating to OA publishing from the viewpoint of libraries and publisher, very little have been done on issues influencing authors’ adoption and use of OA by academic librarians in Northern Nigeria. This study investigated the utilization of OA among academic librarians in Northwestern States of Nigeria. The findings from the study revealed that majority of the respondents indicated high level of awareness of OA publications concept but posses little Knowledge about OA initiatives. The study also discovered that librarians use OA resources and …
