The Past, Present, & Future Of Capturing The Scholarly Record Of A Small Comprehensive U.S. Institution: Toward A Sustained Repository Content Recruitment And Workflow Strategy, Jonathan Bull, Teresa Auch Schultz

Library Faculty Presentations

For smaller institutions, limited staffing, expertise, and content recruitment all threaten an IR’s success. Launched in 2011, ValpoScholar (scholar.valpo.edu) is on its second version of content recruitment and workflow design with a third version in beta. With a primary focus on capturing metadata before moving to full-text access and preservation, this evolving approach has led to a 25 percent increase in record creation, while also increasing full-text availability. This poster will share this changing process.

Relationship Between Library Resources And Research Productivity In Five Nigerian Health-Based Research Facilities, Chigozie Simeon Ugwuona Dr., Virginia Winsell Dike Professor

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study of the relationship between library resources and research productivity in five Nigerian health research facilities was conceived majorly to investigate the relationship existing between these two variables. The study employed a descriptive survey design to undertake a population of 198 research staff in the five research centres (out of this number, 166 were actually used). Questionnaire and observation check list were used to collect data which were presented in tables and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient (r) was applied to determine the relationship while hypothesis was tested with t-statistics at 0.05 probability level. …

Early Days With An Ir: Identifying And Adding Content, Michele Gibney

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group

When I started as an IR manager at Nova Southeastern University (September 2014), the IR had been live for 6 months and one of the in process pilot projects was a journal with 219 back issues dating to 1990. The journal was still on the demonstration site when I started. In this presentation I will discuss the ways in which I interacted with the journal staff, the full migration of all issues and the ensuing projects that have developed due to the primary editor’s interest. These include a conference, book publishing and four additional journals. One of the most important …

Migrating To Alma: The Changing Role Of The Systems Librarian, Ping Fu

Library Scholarship

This presentation will discuss how the roles of systems librarians are expected to change in migrating to Alma from other ILS systems such as Voyager or Aleph. Since Alma is deployed via cloud computing, Ex Libris will centrally implement applications, upgrades, enhancements, etc. Consequently, the roles and responsibilities of systems librarians will be changing, and systems librarians should re-engineer themselves accordingly so that they will be able to support more critical issues in the library.

The Academic Librarians' Guide To The Craft Of Writing Book Reviews, Brian Flota, Michael Mungin, Genya O'Gara, David Vess Jun 2015

The Academic Librarians' Guide To The Craft Of Writing Book Reviews, Brian Flota, Michael Mungin, Genya O'Gara, David Vess

Libraries

What is the art of writing a book review? Succinctly articulating a book’s main selling points, presenting a clear evaluation, and the occasional witty quip are just some of the many components in a reviewer’s bag of tricks. Finding venues to publish reviews (journals, review outlets, blogs) suited to your professional and individual areas of expertise also requires savvy. This presentation will demonstrate how book reviews can be effective tools for a librarian’s collection efforts, an avenue of exposure for one’s library, and a vital artistic and creative outlet in a profession that doesn’t always allow time for those pursuits.

Social Media As Game Strategy: Twitter In The #Infolit Instruction Session, Kelly M. Blanchat, Lydia Willoughby Jun 2015

Social Media As Game Strategy: Twitter In The #Infolit Instruction Session, Kelly M. Blanchat, Lydia Willoughby

Publications and Research

The lure of distractions can entice even the strongest of student wills in a computer classroom. Research requires strategic thinking and ordered planning to drown out the noise of online distractions. This poster demonstrates a unique way to capitalize on the natural overlap of research, communication, and social media by employing game strategy to lead learning outcomes for undergraduate student research. Instead of silencing social media, this activity incorporates Twitter as a platform to introduce information literacy concepts and participatory practices of scholarship.

The Beginning Of Digital Wisdom, Michael J. Paulus Jr., Ryan Ingersoll Jun 2015

The Beginning Of Digital Wisdom, Michael J. Paulus Jr., Ryan Ingersoll

SPU Works

Marc Prensky, who popularized the term “digital natives” more than ten years ago, now emphasizes the need for “digital wisdom”: using digital technologies wisely to become wiser. Recent research reveals that so-called digital natives are often “digital naïves”—familiarity with digital technologies does not translate into facility with them. Incoming college students report declining confidence in their computer skills and report very modest improvements by the time they graduate. Employers report deficiencies in the technological skills of college graduates and, perhaps most troubling, studies of youth and young adults show that ethical and moral reasoning does not extend much beyond self-protection. …

A Case Study Of University Archives: Illinois State University Archives As A Model Archive, Tammy M. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Given the diversity of sizes, administrators, and archival theory, it would appear logical to think that college and university archives would vary greatly in their development, processes, collecting policies, and challenges. While there is some variation, there are more similarities in college and university archives than there are differences. This study of four state universities in Illinois examines theses similarities and differences, comparing them with the Illinois State University Archives and with best practices and standards set by the Society of American Archivists and the National Archives and Records Administration.

Do You Hear What I See? Assessing Accessibility Of Digital Commons And Contentdm, Wendy Walker, Teressa M. Keenan Jun 2015

Do You Hear What I See? Assessing Accessibility Of Digital Commons And Contentdm, Wendy Walker, Teressa M. Keenan

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

This article discusses the accessibility of two content management systems, Berkeley Electronic Press’ Digital Commons and OCLC’s CONTENTdm, widely used in libraries to host institutional repository and digital collections content. Based on observations by a visually-impaired student who used the JAWS screen reader to view the design and display of digital objects in both systems, we provide a general overview of the accessibility of each system. We discuss potential suggestions for accessibility-related improvements, and we offer ideas for library administrators of these systems about how to maximize the back-end configurations for accessibility.

Online Bibliographies For Shared Discovery, Jessica Schomberg Jun 2015

Online Bibliographies For Shared Discovery, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

A few years ago, I began investigating best practices in cataloging assessment. I started with a review of related literature to gather citations on the topic. As this work progressed, I found that researchers describe assessment, or pieces of assessment, using many different terms including evaluation, quality, workflow, cost, and production. They also write specifically about cataloging or broadly about technical services; of which cataloging or metadata is a part.

Understand And Analyzing Learning Objects: A Foundation For Long-Term Substantiality And Use For E-Learning, Hsin-Liang Chen, Joi L. Moore, Weichao Chen

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we investigated the genres of learning objects (LOs) within eight e-learning courses that provide boating safety instruction in the United States. Guided by findings from our literature review, five genres of LOs emerged during the analysis, including interactive and non-interactive graphics, interactive and non-interactive animations, and interactive text feedback. We surveyed the use of each genre of LOs within the courses and found that more non-interactive LOs than interactive LOs were adopted. Also, interactive text feedback was the most popular interactive genre available for seven courses. In our discussion, we explore potential management mechanisms of LOs in …

Know The Lingo: How Ilead Ohio Influenced Library Collaboration And Discovery For Patrons, Jessica Crossfield Mcintosh, Kirstin Krumsee, Julie Zaveloff, Derek Zoladz

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to share the authors’ collective experiences of ILEAD, explore the mobile app (Know the Lingo) development process and inspire further use of the open access code. Libraries have changed over time, providing more and more access to information. Despite the goal of the library to serve as a provider of information resources, the authors’ classification systems, vocabulary and jargon can often alienate the majority of the users. The authors’ team, brought together by ILEAD Ohio, worked to determine a community need among the authors’ institutions, which led to the creation …
