Blogging the Library
Hello! My name is Elizabeth Steinhour and I am working in Special Collections as the Diane Werely Smith ’73 Project Intern. This is the second summer I am spending in Gettysburg and I very excited to see where it takes me! This summer, I will be working on various college history projects and learning the ins and outs of book conservation and archives. Currently, I am working on transcribing the diary of the son of former Gettysburg College President Henry Lewis Baugher that was written during his trip to Europe in 1867 and I’m very excited to share with all …

Faculty Publications
Objective: When the AAA Library (BBB) at CCC released a new website with same-look capabilities for computers, tablets, and smartphones, we undertook a summative assessment to review website features and to determine baseline measures of website access via device and patron group.
Methods: The study used a mixed methods approach using three levels of assessment (focus groups, an online survey, and a usability test), with each level informing the subsequent level.
Results: The website changes were well-received by the overwhelming majority of patrons. Device usage was associated with the type of task for which patrons were accessing …

I will be working closely with the staff experiencing first hand all of the work that goes into the organized and preserved collections. So far I have begun work on a collection of letters from Lillian Quinn, a woman who lived in the World War II era, as well …
From Co-Location To Collaboration: Working Together To Improve Student Learning, Susan Montgomery, Suzanne D. Robertshaw
From Co-Location To Collaboration: Working Together To Improve Student Learning, Susan Montgomery, Suzanne D. Robertshaw
Faculty Publications
An academic librarian and the coordinator of a campus tutoring and writing center recently relocated to the library researched their value to second-year students. Differences in the amount and type of available data called for conducting in-depth interviews with students about their research and writing processes. The researchers also reviewed relevant material regarding similar collaborative efforts at other college and universities. The gaps revealed in the environmental scan along with the best practices of librarian/writing center collaboration helped determine future steps needed for both units to move from mere co-location to working in true collaboration.

Influence Of Computer Literacy On Postgraduates' Use Of E-Resources In Nigerian University Libraries, Daniel Abubakar, Airen Adetimirin
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study investigated how computer literacy predisposes postgraduate students to use e-resources. The survey research design and multi-stage sampling technique were used to select 2726 postgraduate students from 16 Nigerian universities. A questionnaire and computer test was used to collect data and data was analysed using percentages and Pearson’s product moment correlation. The postgraduates’ computer literacy level was average (56.3%). They used only few of the e-resources in their libraries and the frequency of usage was low (weighted average X = 2.45). Computer literacy had positive relationship with postgraduates’ usage of e-resources that was positive, very strong and significant (r= …

This article is for administrators, department heads, supervisors and anyone who employs students to assist with the day to day operation of their organization and want to maximize the experience and benefit for both the student and the organization. As service is the heart of the librarianship, it is critical that anyone working in the library start with a good foundation of training, tools and expectations in order to provide high quality service regardless of what area they are employed in. This is particularly important for student employees hired by the library many of which have never held a job …

Put The Kettle On: Crowdsourcing With A Cup Of Tea, Jessica Dame
South Carolina Libraries
The South Carolina State Library (SCSL) hosted a unique crowdsourcing event to gain descriptive metadata for parts of their photographic collection from the 1960s through the 1990s. This event was the Metadata Crowdsource Retiree Tea, and was held April 15, 2015 for retirees of the SCSL. Attendees came together to provide information for 175 selected photographs while enjoying refreshments. Metadata collected included title, date, and description. Following the event, photographs were scanned and metadata was recorded. The photographs will be included in current and new digital collections in the South Carolina Digital Library.

Collecting Cats: Library Lessons From Neko Atsume, Kelly M. Blanchat, Megan Brooks
Publications and Research
This blog post is the culmination of a Twitter conversation between librarians talking about their experiences playing a phone game. The game is called Nekoatsume and it involves taking care of digital cats in a virtual backyard. Nekoatsume is entirely in Japanese, a key fact that actually started the Twitter conversation (and not the fact that the game involves cats, as might be expected). Despite the language barrier, Nekoatsume is remarkably user-friendly; library databases should be just as user-friendly as a game in a foreign language, but too often they’re not. With so many variables in acquiring research — design, …

Displayed during the UNM School of Medicine’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, the timeline illustrated the library’s growth and impact on education, research, and healthcare. A special …
Discovering Open Access Articles: Maximum Access, Maximum Visibility! A Report Of The Alcts Continuing Resources Section Program. American Library Association Annual Conference, Las Vegas, June 2014, Mavis B. Molto
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
The growing open access movement raises many questions for libraries and researchers. A program, presented by the Education, Research, and Publications Coordinating Committee of the ALCTS Continuing Resources Section, addressed prominent open access issues and offered a number of solutions currently under development by institutions and NISO (National Information Standards Organization). The three presenters provided background on the various issues, a description of the new open access policy at the University of California system, an overview of the challenges in accessing open access articles in hybrid journals, and a description of the NISO Open Access Metadata and Indicators Initiative.

Collaboration In The Iberoamerican Journals In The Category Information Science & Library Science In Wos, Alexander Maz-Machado, Noelia Jiménez-Fanjul, Maria José Madrid
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article presents a bibliometric study about collaboration in the Iberoamerican journals indexed in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) within the category Information Science & Library Science. It has been found that the rate of authors per article is 2, 24, it has been calculated the collaborative index (CI) and the degree of collaboration (DC) from 2006 to 2014 and even though both CI and DC have increased, this rise has been small. Furthermore, international collaboration in the articles is minimum and almost all of it revolves around Spain.

Preserving Wmu’S Musical Heritage: Digitizing Aging Magnetic Tape Audio Recordings, Marianne Swierenga, Christina Doane
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
Western Michigan University has decades worth of unique recorded content on aging magnetic media. WMU’s School of Music has a particularly rich collection of recordings featuring student and faculty ensembles, visiting artist performances, and graduate recitals. Facing the possibility of losing these invaluable recorded sound artifacts through obsolescence or decay, the University Libraries realized we could wait no longer and needed to develop a preservation and digitization strategy to ensure long term access.
Internship And Practicum Requirements In Archival Education, Gavin T. Strassel, Meghan M. Courtney
Internship And Practicum Requirements In Archival Education, Gavin T. Strassel, Meghan M. Courtney
Reuther Library Scholarly Publications
Archivists have long debated the nature of archival internships and practicum requirements as components of archival education. Advocates cite these requirements as the best way for emerging archivists to acquire hands-on training, while critics worry they can be used to further student exploitation and a devaluation of professional archivists’ labor. This presentation examined requirements in graduate archives programs and compared them to accepted guidelines for internships in the archives profession and the American economy at large. These presentations draw on original survey data collected by the presenters from educational programs listed on the Society of American Archivists’ Directory of Archival …
Using Ipads To Facilitate Library Instruction Sessions In A Scale-Up Classroom, Michelle Gibeault
Using Ipads To Facilitate Library Instruction Sessions In A Scale-Up Classroom, Michelle Gibeault
University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study details a trial in which three undergraduate library instruction sessions were conducted on a class set of iPads, within a SCALE-UP classroom. The iPads suggested strong potential as replacements for desktop computers and demonstrated support for key active learning approaches: instant polling, content sharing, and navigation of web pages and databases. The SCALE-UP classroom has made notable contributions in promoting undergraduate learning, and its advantages were found to be extensible to library instruction. The pedagogy which the space is designed to reinforce, collaborative learning segments interspersed with lecture components, seemed to promote student engagement in library instruction sessions.
