Promoting Your Scholarship Through Open Access, Andrew Wesolek

Presentations

Many academic librarians are required to publish as part of the promotion and tenure process. And if they are not, they surely consult with faculty who are. Often, it is not enough to simply have published works, but one must also demonstrate the impact of those works. Luckily, there are strategies you can use to bolster the visibility and impact of your work. This presentation will cover author's rights, negotiating publication agreements, open access publishing, and free resources you can use to boost the visibility of your work.

The Lesson Plan As A Tool For Library Instruction, Michelle Price Jun 2015

The Lesson Plan As A Tool For Library Instruction, Michelle Price

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

A lesson plan is the backbone to a library instruction session, no matter what the time length, teaching methods, location or media used. When well-constructed, a lesson plan can provide a seamless integration of library instruction with a classroom assignment and can help create intrinsic motivation for students. Also, it can serve as a guide to scale the lesson objectives and activities to the time available. This living document can also expand and contract with each new session as different situations arise, allowing you to quickly adapt to different time or technology restrictions. It can also help to differentiate the …

Opportunistic Uses Of The Traditional School Day Through Student Examination Of Fitbit Activity Tracker Data, Victor R. Lee, Joel R. Drake, Ryan Cain, Jeffrey L. Thayne

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In large part due to the highly prescribed nature of the typical school day for children, efforts to design new interactions with technology have often focused on less-structured after-school clubs and other out-of-school environments. We argue that while the school day imposes serious restrictions, school routines can and should be opportunistically leveraged by designers and by youth. Specifically, wearable activity tracking devices open some new avenues for opportunistic collection of and reflection on data from the school day. To demonstrate this, we present two cases from an elementary statistics classroom unit we designed that intentionally integrated wearable activity trackers and …

What's A Nice Jewish Book Group Doing In A Catholic University?: The Book Group As A Community Outreach Tool, Rhonda Rosen

Librarian Publications & Presentations

The book group is a staple of the public library system. For years public libraries have used it to gather readers of different genres (mystery book lovers), to celebrate holidays or different times of year (seasons, summer reading programs), and to appeal to diverse patron groups (children’s reading groups, student recreational reading groups). At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a medium-sized private Jesuit university, we decided to use the book group as a way of reaching out to our neighboring communities. This article will describe how we used the traditional book group to promote a new academic program and the unanticipated …
