Creating Effective Instructional Materials With I-Learn, Stacey Greenwell Jun 2015

Creating Effective Instructional Materials With I-Learn, Stacey Greenwell

Library Presentations

Given the proliferation of information and the lifelong importance of information literacy and critical thinking skills, librarians need to know how to best design information literacy instructional materials in order to help students locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. This poster builds upon an experimental research study conducted to determine how instructional materials designed using the I-LEARN model could increase student understanding and application of information literacy concepts. The findings from the research study show that I-LEARN can be particularly valuable in designing online course guides and provides an easy-to-use framework for developing reusable guide content.

Blogging the Library

A lot has been going on in Special Collections since my last blog post, so I’ll get you up to speed. As mentioned in my first post, I and the other interns created our own book. It was an awesome project and I learned to appreciate books as physical masterpieces and not just the words inside. I made my book with a black cover, and the end pages were made from homemade paper. Publishing And Public Access Ideas, Paul Royster Jun 2015

Publishing And Public Access Ideas, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

What’s happening in publishing … … since the arrival of digital?

Technologically, work has become • easier to produce • easier to share • easier to disseminate worldwide

Practically, however, work has become : • concentrated in hands of fewer publishers • harder to get (legally) • more expensive •less circulated

Therefore: The Open Access Movement

Disclaimer: • I am not an apostle for Open Access • I believe in public access, not necessarily OpenAccess

What’s the difference?
Open access* = license to re-use, re-post, re-distribute, re-combine, re-work, revise, etc. [*Budapest definition]
Public access = right to read, download, and …

Developing Collecting Areas Through Digital Surrogate Donations: Are The Benefits Worth The Risks?, Kevin C. Miller Jun 2015

Developing Collecting Areas Through Digital Surrogate Donations: Are The Benefits Worth The Risks?, Kevin C. Miller

Pepperdine University Libraries

Special collections librarians at small or medium sized institutions may lack the resources required to build new collecting areas or further enrich the collecting areas mandated by their mission. As one measure to overcome this challenge at Pepperdine University, we are experimenting with an approach that we call “digital surrogate” donations. In these cases, we work with donors to create digital surrogates—typically scans of images or texts—of select physical materials with which donors are not quite ready to part. Per a modified donor agreement, the digital surrogate collections are then made available to researchers through our digital archive and open …

A Decade Of Critical Information Literacy: A Review Of The Literature, Eamon Tewell Jun 2015

A Decade Of Critical Information Literacy: A Review Of The Literature, Eamon Tewell

Communications in Information Literacy

As information literacy continues in its centrality to many academic libraries' missions, a line of inquiry has developed in response to ACRL's charge to develop information literate citizens. The literature of critical information literacy questions widely held assumptions about information literacy and considers in what ways librarians may encourage students to engage with and act upon information's complex and inherently political nature. This review explores the research into critical information literacy, including critical pedagogy and critiques of information literacy, in order to provide an entry point for this emerging and challenging approach to information literacy.

Education Theory And Pedagogy For Practical Library Instruction: How To Learn What We Really Need To Know, Molly Montgomery Jun 2015

Education Theory And Pedagogy For Practical Library Instruction: How To Learn What We Really Need To Know, Molly Montgomery

Communications in Information Literacy

The majority of librarians who have taken on instruction responsibilities have had little to no formal training in educational theories or pedagogical practices. We do the best we can without a foundation for our teaching. This Perspectives column looks at how much theory we really need to know, and how can we gain this knowledge in order to become effective and engaging instructors.

Teaching And Learning Information Synthesis: An Intervention And Rubric Based Assessment, Kacy Lundstrom, Anne R. Diekema, Heather Leary, Sheri Haderlie, Wendy Holliday Jun 2015

Teaching And Learning Information Synthesis: An Intervention And Rubric Based Assessment, Kacy Lundstrom, Anne R. Diekema, Heather Leary, Sheri Haderlie, Wendy Holliday

Communications in Information Literacy

The purpose of this research was to determine how information synthesis skills can be taught effectively, and to discover how the level of synthesis in student writing can be effectively measured. The intervention was an information synthesis lesson that broke down the synthesis process into sequenced tasks. Researchers created a rubric which they used to assess a student's level of information synthesis demonstrated in their final research essays. A form of counting analysis was also created to see if other methods could help in measuring synthesis. Findings from the rubric analysis revealed that students appear to benefit from the synthesis …

Motivational Design In Information Literacy Instruction, Amanda Kathryn Nichols Hess Jun 2015

Motivational Design In Information Literacy Instruction, Amanda Kathryn Nichols Hess

Communications in Information Literacy

Motivational design theory complements instructional design theory and, when used together, both principles can impact learning, knowledge acquisition, and knowledge retention. In information literacy instruction, motivational design exists throughout the appropriate standards documents. However, there is limited current research on the best practices for using motivation in information literacy or library-based instruction. The existing research does indicate that librarians who deliver information literacy instruction attempt to implement motivational design theories such as Keller's ARCS model into their teaching, although often at a low level. Furthermore, studies of face-to-face and online library learning environments illustrate that using the ARCS model – …

"Mind-Blowing"": Fostering Self-Regulated Learning In Information Literacy Instruction, Eveline Houtman

Communications in Information Literacy

The new ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education brings a new emphasis into our instruction on student metacognition and dispositions. In this article I introduce self-regulated learning, a related concept from the field of education; it encompasses metacognition, emotions, motivations and behaviors. I discuss how this concept could be important and helpful in implementing the related elements in the ACRL Framework and draw on the concept to devise strategies and activities that promote students' self-awareness and learning skills. This focus promotes a more learner-centered approach to teaching. The article also adds to the conversation on developing a self-reflective …

Flipping The Business Information Literacy Classroom: Redesign, Implementation And Assessment Of A Case Study, Ilana Stonebraker Jun 2015

Flipping The Business Information Literacy Classroom: Redesign, Implementation And Assessment Of A Case Study, Ilana Stonebraker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

A team of librarians at Purdue University transformed a business information literacy course from a traditional lecture, 40-student class into multiple sections of a flipped, 70-student classroom to meet the request that the successful course be required for all 500 undergraduate students. Scaling up required the adoption of flipped learning techniques for better utilization of library teaching resources. This case study provides key insights for others implementing credit classes or integrating similar content into one-shots or embedded work. It also describes the assessed results determined through student feedback (focus groups) and student performance (pre/post-tests).

Opportunities Outweigh Obstacles, Betty Rozum, Becky Thoms, Scott Bates, Danielle M. Barandiaran

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Student research is an untapped commodity. A survey of 238 Institutional Repositories in 2013 indicated that only 38% collect student research other than theses and dissertations. We think student research is a potential goldmine. Do other librarians agree? What about stake holders outside of the library? And, what are the obstacles preventing more robust collection of student research?

Facilitating Discovery Of Historic Sound Recordings: Classroom And Research Strategies, Rachel Fox Von Swearingen, Jenny Doctor Jun 2015

Facilitating Discovery Of Historic Sound Recordings: Classroom And Research Strategies, Rachel Fox Von Swearingen, Jenny Doctor

Librarian Publications

The Belfer Audio Archive at Syracuse University Libraries holds one of the largest collections of sound recordings in the USA, specializing in formats dating from the 1890s to the 1970s. The co-presenters encourage student interaction with these collections, guiding their research and understanding of the recordings’ cultural significance and relevance. Experience shows that immediate engagement with music on pre-LP recordings is often lacking, especially given sonic imperfections that characterize playback from original media. Therefore, we create opportunities for students to discover and engage with historic recordings – to hear them, research them, and ultimately reference or repurpose them in their …

Author's Rights And Predatory Publishers, Paul Royster Jun 2015

Author's Rights And Predatory Publishers, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

All publishers are predators. Even the ones who are reasonably honest and responsible. But some take it too far, and they use business practices that are extremely misleading and dishonest.

“People I don’t know keep contacting me online.” The DOAJ and Beall's List. How the scam works; a matter of degree. Troll publishers entice authors to sign over the rights.

Bad signs: You never heard of them, even though you have been doing research in the area for 5 years. Title is vague and overly broad. Physical location is obscure. No affiliation with school or society. Interest in receiving money …

Effortless Building Census, Sam Kome Jun 2015

Effortless Building Census, Sam Kome

Library Staff Publications and Research

Library headcounts are tedious, time-consuming, and subject to the vagaries of scheduling, attention to detail, and incomplete (especially for consortia). If we conduct them perfectly, on-schedule without fail we can gather at best the number of patrons seated in various areas of the library at two arbitrary times per day. We don't know their home campus. We don't know how patronage varies by time of day. If only there was an automatic way of conducting counts that was automatic, unsleeping, and could differentiate between campuses The wireless infrastructure is (hopefully) always on, and devices are nearly ubiquitous, and typically signed …
