Some of the most important characteristics employers look for in new hires is the ability to solve problems and critically examine information in diverse workplace environments, making critical thinking an important, transferable 21st century skill and a crucial component of lifelong learning. During the 2013-2014 academic year the College of Charleston Library and Center for Student Learning partnered to design and deliver a series of complementary workshops in order to build community, increase workshop attendance, and provide outreach at the Library. This was the first time that the two organizations had teamed up to co-design, sponsor, and market a year long program of complementary information literacy and study skills offerings.

In the past, Middle Georgia State College’s assessment of library instruction mainly consisted of post-instruction evaluations in which students answered questions about the class’s usefulness and gave comments. However, we wanted to be able to tie our library instruction sessions to learning outcomes based on ACRL Information Literacy Standards—not just student impressions of the class. For three years, the college had been conducting two library instruction sessions for each section of our new First Year Experience class, and we were using a standardized instruction outline and worksheet for each of those classes already. Librarians face numerous challenges when designing effective, sustainable assessment methods for student learning outcomes in one-shot, course-integrated library instruction sessions. In this presentation, we will share how librarians at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) use a rubric to assess students’ authentic learning products from one-shot instruction sessions for a research and writing course required for all undergraduate students. Members of this panel (a librarian and faculty member) began collaborating to create information literacy sessions for English 272: Modernist Literature. Assuming that students enrolled would be English majors or similar, we created sessions and assignments focused on higher-order research skills, such as working with and analyzing primary sources.

However, this section of English 272 fulfilled a General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirement. At our institution, students take 43 credit hours to fulfill GEC requirements, courses from a broad range of disciplines. A recent institutional study at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay investigated the academic achievement of interlibrary loan (ILL) users as compared to non-ILL users. While this study provided important local insight into ILL use and the demographics of ILL users (class rank, major), it uncovered a rather minor overall GPA difference,.20 GPA points, between ILL users and non-ILL users. However, within these data was an interesting subset that once thoroughly investigated, provided rich details about ILL article use, the users who rely on ILL for articles, and the GPA differences between users across the spectrum of ILL article use. This session is geared towards library staff who would like to increase practical knowledge about collection development and management of DVDs and streaming videos. Video selection includes identifying videos of interest, forming relationships with vendors, issues of pricing, licensing, and copyright fair use versus public performance rights. Video processing involves the steps in providing access to videos through cataloging for local consumption. This includes decisions such as genre and subject heading choices, classification decision, special interest MARC fields. We'll also speak briefly on decisions about packaging, shelving, circulation, weeding, and preservation.

This paper is a report of a collaborative research project that identified the competencies undergraduate history majors should have related to finding and using archival materials. The boundary-spanning collaboration involved archivists, librarians, and history faculty.

Historians have long relied upon archives as essential source material, and recent studies confirmed the continued significance of archives to research in this field. However, there is no detailed listing of the archival research competencies that college history students should attain. Institute of Research Design for Librarianship (IRDL) is a three-year project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in the United States, which seeks to provide professional development opportunities and a support system for academic librarians who want to improve their research skills and increase their research output. We have recently completed the first nine-day Institute for 25 librarians from all over the country, and we would like to share our experience with the international community, hoping to generate more interest and encourage more discussion on practitioner research in LIS.

Demand-Driven Acquisitions For Print Books: How Holds Can Help As Much As Interlibrary Loan, Gerrit Van Dyk

While there is a growing field of literature surrounding demanddriven acquisitions (DDA) for electronic books, libraries have been relatively silent regarding DDA for print books, with the notable exception of using interlibrary loan (ILL). This study will discuss how libraries can examine holds queue demand in conjunction with ILL to make collection development decisions related to print materials. It will also discuss how to work with catalogers to deflect ILL requests for these same high-demand items, so they can stay in the library for local patrons.

The Association of Earth Science Editors held their annual meeting at the University of Kentucky in October 2014. They requested a technical talk on archives and preservation topics. A group of co-presenters organized by Ruth Bryan conducted a survey of the membership (results in the Introduction) and crafted 30-minute presentations on individual topics. Included in this paper is the Introduction and the Legal (property rights/donor restrictions) and Copyright (intellectual rights) presentation of the technical talk.

This study explores the use of local public libraries by expatriate Japanese families staying in a micro-urban, university-centered community in the United States, with a specific focus on their reading and information gathering practices. The data used for the study was collected through semi-structured interviews the authors conducted in 2013. The expatriate families in this study consist of those who temporarily live in the area with clear prospects of returning to Japan. At Gettysburg College we tackled these questions and devised engagement opportunities using social media and anchoring activities around popular spaces in the library. Our session will explain the planning, execution, and assessment of our projects and how it can be adapted to other libraries.
