Help information regarding library resources and tools is a critical part of library services, but existing help channels are often fragmented and under-maintained. Library help needs to have a centralized and engaging platform for users to receive assistance and experts including librarians, faculty, and students to share knowledge and experience. To meet this critical need, we have developed CrowdAsk, an open-source help system for academic libraries based on the concept of crowdsourcing. Gazing Into The Crystal Ball: Using Scenarios For Future Visioning Of A Distance Learning Library Service, Anne Marie Casey, Jon E. Cawthorne, Kathleen Citro

This article describes the use of scenarios as a tool to assist a large distance learning library service in its strategic planning. Through a description of the scenario process from beginning to end, the authors detail the steps that the library director and the consultant took initially; their missteps; and the successful conclusion. This study of the journey through the scenario process to a new strategic plan should prove useful to library administrators interested in exploring new ways to plan for uncertain futures.

Reflective Teaching: Improving Library Instruction Through Self-Reflection, Mandi Goodsett

Increasingly, the role of librarians in higher education is shifting from primarily librarian-as-expert to include librarian-as-educator (Holt, 2002). As a result, academic librarians with a wide variety of job titles are finding themselves contributing to the instructional services of their library (Hall, 2013). Even those librarians who have instruction as a principal responsibility may have little to no training or experience in instruction when they begin teaching students in one-shot or credit-bearing instruction situations. In a recent study of employer’s expectations for library instruction training, nearly 90 percent of respondents found instruction to be important to their library (Hall, 2013). …

While cloud computing is not new, cloud-based services have matured and become more prevalent, thereby offering a range of new technology tools for libraries. Cloud computing technologies, and in particular those designed for end-users, present librarians with varying technology proficiencies the ability to access and use technologies - and related services - that might otherwise be beyond their reach. As cloud computing becomes more of a mainstay, many librarians are considering new ways to use these third-party tools in their work.

Open Access Week at Gettysburg College

This print marketing piece was designed to complement online promotion of Open Access Week 2014 at Gettysburg College.

Door hangers provide a brief description of OA Week events aimed at faculty.

These were printed at our campus print shop at minimal cost. Circles were cut with a circle tool borrowed from the library's Badge-A-Minit button-making system. Door hangers were hung on every professor's office door.

The Singapore Management University started implementing a new solution for Integrated Research Information System (IRIS) in April 2014. Project background and some success factors is covered. IRIS would replace existing silo in-house systems. The key objective of IRIS is to have one system that takes care of ethics, research project management, grant management, publications and reporting. During the IRIS project implementation, the tasks performed included mapping of existing fields to the new IRIS and loading of existing data to IRIS test system. New workflows and some re-configuration of the default system were proposed.

Two Approaches To Collaborative Information Literacy Instruction At A Small Engineering School, Conor Cote, Scott Juskiewicz

Two librarians at a small STEM academic library have partnered with professors to develop and teach chemistry and writing courses. These librarians have successfully worked with professors to serve as an active presence within the classroom. This article describes the challenges of navigating the typical obstacles librarians face when attempting to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, reflects on the benefits of these collaborations, and touches on strategies for implementing similar programs at other institutions. It outlines two distinct approaches to collaborating with professors on credit-bearing information literacy courses, along with the key steps involved in planning and implementing these …

As the needs of academic library users evolve, so must the ways that librarians chose to interact with those users. A great deal of energy has been spent focusing on the first-year student in the university setting, but is this the best focal point for instructional efforts? After an extensive brainstorming session, the librarians at Clemson University decided to refocus time and energy from the first-year students to upper-class students and faculty.
