The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards for the 21st Century Learner Lesson Plan Database (AASL Database) is a free, Open Access, interactive tool recently (2011) developed by the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association, to assist librarians, teachers and other educators in implementing the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner (AASL Standards) and the Common Core State Standards. It is comprised of vetted, content-area lesson plans meant to provide excellent models to integrate AASL Standards across K-12 curricula; the platform also includes social networking features and a user portfolio. I've been interested in issues of diversity for a long time, and was first exposed to theories of cross cultural competence during graduate studies in linguistics. Later in research for my MLS, I explored aspects of cultural competence in relation to library services and the ongoing challenges of diversifying the library workforce. I'd like to talk with you today about why meeting that challenge is important and the alternatives available to improve our services to our diverse communities.

Since their earliest days, libraries have struggled with meeting two opposing goals: preservation of materials and adequate user access to those same materials. Adequate user access to library materials includes physical access as well as providing a navigable system of organization that allows users to find needed materials. Rather than sit by and wait for memorabilia related to the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg to come to them, archivists at Gettysburg College took an active role, becoming part of the history they would normally just accept from donors. American Librarian Ralph Munn's historic tour of Australian libraries in 1934 is well documented. Along with Ernest Pitt, Chief Librarian of the State Library of Victoria, he spent nearly ten weeks travelling from Sydney and back again, visiting libraries in all the state capitals and many regional towns throughout the country. Munn's trip was funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which was then, through its Dominions fund, turning attention to philanthropic opportunities in the Antipodes. The resulting report, Australian Libraries: A Survey of Conditions and Suggestions for their Improvement (commonly referred to as the Munn-Pitt Report) is often …

Mispronunciation Detection For Language Learning And Speech Recognition Adaptation, Zhenhao Ge

Open Access Dissertations

The areas of "mispronunciation detection" (or "accent detection" more specifically) within the speech recognition community are receiving increased attention now. Two application areas, namely language learning and speech recognition adaptation, are largely driving this research interest and are the focal points of this work.

There are a number of Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) systems with Computer Aided Pronunciation Training (CAPT) techniques that have been developed. In this thesis, a new HMM-based text-dependent mispronunciation system is introduced using text Adaptive Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (AFCCs). It is shown that this system outperforms the conventional HMM method based on Mel Frequency Cepstral …

Project Description

OBJECTIVE: To determine if new, strategic partnerships can be initiated between The Texas Medical Center Library (The TMC Library), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston (UTHSC-H).

METHODS: Cohort study

The TMC Library joined a 22-member cohort of academic and research libraries to participate in the DuraSpace/ARL/DLF 2012 E-Science Institute, to discover new methods of supporting computational scientific research. Purpose: To determine if a team approach to a complex integrated library system (ILS) migration would result in a timely and successful outcome.

Brief Description: Changing needs and an aging integrated library system server platform prompted Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library to migrate to a new ILS. After considering several options, Himmelfarb decided to join with the George Washington University's Jacob Burns Law Library in their move to a hosted instance of Innovative Interface's Sierra ILS and Encore OPAC.

Recognizing that while medical students are learning to care for others, they are often taking poor care of themselves, librarians at the George Washington University's Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library developed a three-pronged Healthy Living initiative, launched in the fall 2012 semester. Focusing on diet/nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction, the initiative included new collections and multiple activities with partners from both on and off-campus.

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library at the George Washington University has held an annual art show since 1987. Students, staff, faculty, and clinicians from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the School of Public Health and Health Services, the School of Nursing, the GW Hospital, and Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library are invited to submit artwork to be displayed throughout the first floor of the library in a month-long display. The talent of the artists is celebrated at an opening reception where light refreshments are served and students, staff, and faculty mingle and view the art.

As the project developed, a broader scope was outlined to capture not only our past but our current staff, services, and programs with a goal of using it for outreach. Patron-Driven Acquisition Optimization And Workflows At Liberty University Jerry Falwell Library, Erin Crane, Lori B. Snyder

In the Spring of 2010, the Liberty University Jerry Falwell Library began a pilot patron-driven acquisition program with the e-book aggregator ebrary. In the Fall of 2012, the program had been active for two years and the librarians sought to optimize the program in the form of selecting more titles which are used. This paper describes the formula that the librarians used to achieve optimization in the PDA program. Also described is the workflow involved with acquisitions and cataloging before and after the purchases are made.
