Early press release describing the PLACE (Position-based Location Archive Coordinate Explorer) project that is funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) library partnered with the UNH Earth Systems Research Center to develop a geospatial interface that is searchable by geospatial coordinates.

Library Worker Retirement Plans: A Large Survey Reveals New Findings, Eric C. Shoaf, Nathan Flowers

Publications

This article examines the retirement plans of current library workers. A national survey of more than 4,400 library professionals reveals more than one fourth of respondents aged fifty to fifty-nine expect to retire in the next five years, and nearly three fourths of those in their sixties and seventies expect to retire in five years. However, nearly half of respondents indicate that the latest economic downturn would lead them to retire later and/or stay in their current job. Adequate benefits and pay were the most important factors leading people to stay in their current jobs, but nearly two thirds of …

Our roadmap to the cloud started with WorldCat Local as our catalog/discovery system. Next we moved to OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services (WMS), a cloud-based ILS system/platform including the License module and WorldCat Knowledge Base we use to manage our e-resources. At the same time, the cloud also moved into public services with the use of the Springshare platform for our reference, instruction, statistics and room reservation systems. Staff scheduling is also in the cloud with Whentowork. All of these cloud based technology changes have revolutionized the way librarians and staff do their routine jobs. In recent years, the Republic of Ireland has witnessed a growth in information literacy (IL), with its importance recognised in independent and lifelong learning; there have also been some key developments which have helped to raise the profile of IL and facilitated a more coherent national approach to IL development (O’Brien & Russell, 2012). Preparing Public Librarians For Consumer Health Information Service: A Nation-Wide Study, L. Luo, Van M. Ta Park

A nationwide survey study was conducted to gain understanding as to how to prepare public librarians for consumer health information service. Findings indicate that the popular health information needs encountered by public librarians cover a wide variety of topics, including the human body, a medical/health condition, a disease, a medical concept, and fitness/diet/nutrition. The top two challenges faced by public librarians when providing consumer health information service are difficulty in interpreting patrons' questions and lack of knowledge about available and trusted/appropriate medical/health information sources. In 2005, Mark A. Greene and Dennis Meissner published an article urging archivists to reassess processing strategies to focus less on detailed arrangement and description and more on minimal efforts to provide access to researchers. In 2008, the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History in Atlanta, Georgia, was awarded a grant from the Council of Library and Information Resources to process the personal papers of Andrew J. Young. The grant stipulated the implementation of Greene and Meissner’s “more product, less process” (MPLP) techniques.
