University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Forty-three years of employment at the University Libraries have encompassed remarkable changes in collection, organization, and distribution of information in the University community. Card catalogs and files of paper serial records have disappeared, and acquisition of library materials is now a highly automated process. The Libraries staff has grown and diversified as our delivery systems evolved. Branch libraries have disappeared as electronic search and delivery systems became more common and easy to use. Library instruction has become a routine part of service to the library’s users. Adaptive equipment has been acquired to accommodate handicapped users of the library’s collections and …

Lean Principles:
• Identify steps in the process that add customer defined value
• Identify waste in transportation, wait, overproduction, defect, inventory, motion, or extra processing
• Eliminate the steps in the process that don’t add value or are unnecessary
• Make sure the steps flow in an efficient sequence
• Establish pull, i.e., make sure the steps in the sequence don’t create bottlenecks
• Continue to improve the process

My colleagues and I assessed the workflow for data ingest at the Odum Archive at the University of North Carolina. We then made recommendations based on our analysis of the system. This poster discusses the most important recommendation that we gave the staff of the archive. We suggested that they create a script which would automate the steps in the workflow that involve a single point of failure. With the script, the single point of failure remains, but the risk of error has been significantly lessened.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper explores the librarian-based factors that pose serious challenges to the delivery of library services in the 21st century. It is not just funding, but also the librarian that hinders the 21st century library. Factors include inflation of costs, embezzlement, bribery, misappropriation of funds, lack of relevant skills, fear, bias, dogmatism, and ageism. Librarians should develop themselves by seeking ICT training; take full advantage of training and development, and take advantage of the knowledge and education offered by conferences and workshops; ICT skill should be accorded priority in recruiting and retaining librarians; the LIS curriculum should include 21st century …

Revisiting Academic Library Design: A Response To William T. Caniano's "Academic Library Design: A Commons Or An Athenaeum", Donald Beagle
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article responds to William T. Caniano's recent article in Library Philosophy and Practice criticizing the Commons model as causing a "labization" of the library, where a focus on high gate count creates noise problems inimical to the traditional scholarly ideal of the library. Caniano further asserts that increased use of laptops and mobile devices in the future will drive down demand for desktops, thus drastically reducing gate count and causing our Commons to become deserted. Lastly, Caniano advocates replacing it with what he calls the "Athenaeum" model. This article describes a number of sections of the Commons literature not …

The research design was the ex-post- facto. A total of 359 medical records personnel from federal and state university teaching hospitals in Nigeria participated in the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The results of the study reveal that organizational commitment has a significant inverse relationship with work locus of control (r = -.131, P < 0.05), but has a significant positive relationship with job satisfaction (r = . 340, P < 0.05).The study also revealed that a combination of work locus of control and job satisfaction have significant influence on the organizational commitment of medical records personnel in university teaching hospitals in Nigeria. (F = 24.900, df = 2; 356, P < 0.05). A combination of work locus of control and job satisfaction have significant influence on the organizational commitment of medical records personnel in university teaching hospitals in Nigeria.

The findings of the study indicated that the level of SRC usage among teachers is still low. While only a small number of teachers really used SRC services for their teaching-learning purposes. In general, the study seems to suggest that there was an overall lack of interest in the use of SRC by teachers. The findings further revealed the factors that might have …
Engaging Readers, Engaging Texts: An Exploration Of How Librarians Can Use Reader Response Theory To Better Serve Our Patrons, Stephanie M. Mathson
Engaging Readers, Engaging Texts: An Exploration Of How Librarians Can Use Reader Response Theory To Better Serve Our Patrons, Stephanie M. Mathson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Literary theorist Wolfgang Iser describes reading as a creative process in and of itself, which adds layers of meaning and understanding to a text. However, little attention is paid to this theory in most Library and Information Science Programs. Because librarians understand the relationships that can exist between readers and books and how strongly books can impact readers’ lives, we should have a deeper understand of what reader response (or reception) theory is. There are a number of ways that we can apply reader response theory to the work we do, including providing readers’ advisory services, developing collections, reviewing books …

Transmitting Whiteness: Librarians, Children, And Race, 1900-1930s, Shane Hand
Master's Theses
In the wake of the public library movement in the southern United States during the early twentieth century, local librarians began providing library services for those whom they deemed to be their most valuable resources, children. Representatives of a new profession, children’s librarians campaigned for better tomorrows by collecting good books specifically for young readers while providing safe, comfortable spaces that encouraged an atmosphere of instructive entertainment.
Supplemental to the development of a unique children’s department, library administrators sought strong working relationships with the city’s various public schools. The public cooperative that developed between libraries and schools brought thousands of …
