Man Ray: Prophet of the Avant-Garde originally aired as an episode of PBS’ American Masters in 1997 and provides a succinct overview of the life of the talented Man Ray, a painter, photographer, sculptor, and film maker, who is perhaps best known for his photographic portraits of famous artists, such as Igor Stravinsky, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and Pablo Picasso. The film, engagingly narrated by Stockard Channing, surveys Ray’s life while being attuned to the need to frame his life and work in a cultural and historical context. The Role Of Effective Communication In Enhancement Of Library Services: An Overview Of Delta State University Library, Abraka, Daniel Emojorho

This study evaluated the effectiveness of communication in enhancement of library services at Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. An ex-post-facto descriptive research design was adopted. A questionnaire was used to collect data, and frequency distribution and percentages were used to analyze it. The findings revealed that effective communication enhanced library services. There was a contrary view on the use of oral communication. While library staff applauded the use of oral communication in library operations, most users said it does not encourage research. The low level of ICT usage was also observed. As a result of these findings, recommendations were made.

Personal And Socio-Economic Determinants Of Agricultural Information Use By Farmers In The Agricultural Development Programme (Adp) Zones Of Imo State, Nigeria, Umunna Nnaemeka Opara

This study investigated the influence of farmers’ personal and socio-economic characteristics on their use of agricultural information provided by the Imo State Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), Nigeria. An ex-post facto research design was used for the study. Stratified proportionate sampling technique was used to select a sample of 1,032 out of a total of 6,300 farmers across the existing 34 farm blocks and 63 farm cells in the three ADP zones of the state. A self-developed and structured questionnaire was used for data collection. A reliability co-efficient of 0.83 was obtained for the instrument using the Crumbach alpha. Two hypotheses …

In an article investigating how librarians are depicted in the mass media, Maura Seale identifies five categories into which the majority of representations fall: the old maid, the policeman, the parody, the inept librarian, and the hero/ine. Unlike prior representations of librarians in mass media, however, which have been largely controlled by non-librarians, the increased opportunities for amateur video distribution on sites like YouTube have allowed librarians themselves to decide how they are portrayed. This article considers online videos in the context of theories about stereotypes, and it discusses the effects of parody in shaping perceptions of the librarian profession. …

This article discusses the meaning of the term "policy," along with general aspects of policies that might apply to many nations. Of particular concern is the placement of library- and information-oriented policies within a larger context. Literature on information policy is reviewed with the goal of devising a framework for discussing the national goals of policy. Examples from the United States are used to illustrate policy-making. Finally, some trends affecting policy are examined.

The emergence of information communication technology (ICT) has revolutionized the academic library and academic world. ICT is paving way for progress in resource sharing and research. Nigerian libraries are having trouble meeting the needs of users, because of a poor economy and lack of ICT infrastructure. This article reports on a survey of ICT infrastructure in academic libraries in Nigeria and makes recommendations for improvement.

Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1342 – 1400) is the great medieval inventor of words for the English language, words including “library.” He uses that term to represent a distinct spatial home that is organized with skill to find knowledge from the study of texts. A bibliophile himself, Chaucer celebrates the joys and trials of reading while overlooking the library as a substantive learning haven. The location where learning transpires is always secondary to the contents of the books themselves. The library is a documented medieval bedrock to education, even wisdom, but it is little more than a shadow in Chaucer’s poetry. …

At present, two academic library designs dominate the renovation discussion, the Commons and the Athenaeum. The study consists of two parts. The first briefly highlights the research methods used in library and information science (LIS). It identifies model development as an effective research method for LIS research. It also reviews different aspects of models and their use in LIS research in Pakistan. The second part illustrates an example of a draft model entitled “PAK-NISEA” recently proposed for a PhD project. Related issues of the proposed model, i.e. rationale, objectives, research methodology, data collection process, important characteristics of PAK-NISEA, are also discussed.

This article examines the automation procedure in two Nigerian university libraries, the 'Nimbe Adedipe Library of University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (a federal university) and the Main Library of Olabisi Onabanjo University (a state university). Interview checklist and a questionnaire were used as research instruments. Access To Agricultural Information By Fish Farmers In Niger Delta Region Of Nigeria, Margaret U. Ogboma

This paper examines challenges of access to agricultural information by fish farmers in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The survey research design was employed. 100 fish farmers from Bayelsa and Delta States in Nigeria, served as population for the study. The questionnaire, personal observation, and oral interview were the instruments used in data collection. The study revealed that there is availability of relevant agricultural information for fish farmers, with a corresponding difficulty in accessing such information. Factors impeding access to agricultural information include inadequate agricultural extension officers and insufficient use of media, among others. This research analyzes caricatures related to Library and Information Science (LIS), to identify LIS aspects in order to recognize valid criticisms and offer recommendations. Two hundred fifty cartoons and caricatures relating to the topics "book", "library", and "LIS" were gathered and analyzed by means of content analysis. The images were categorized into eight groups for analysis.
