Circumstances of the Instruction: This module is based on a collaborative effort between a college librarian working with two 11 111 grade Advanced Placement (AP) History and English teachers. Students are enrolled in both the English and History classes, making collaboration and curriculum coordination easier. An instructional librarian working in concert with classroom faculty is beneficial to students because many teachers are not fully aware of recent trends such as information storage and retrieval systems and Web-based search tools. Students taking this module are intelligent, score well on standardized aptitude tests, and receive better than average grades. Still, …

The concept of health literacy finds its origins in the field of education. In its brief history the definition, structure, and direction of the field has changed dramatically and has emerged as a multidisciplinary endeavor full of discipline specific manifestations, most recently, public health literacy. Using bibliometric and citation analyses, this study investigated the field of health literacy from the first use of the term in 1974 to the present year, 2010. The Physical And The Virtual: The Relationship Between Library As Place And Electronic Collections, Jennifer Gerke, Jack M. Maness

A statistical analysis of responses to a LibQUAL+™ survey at the University of Colorado at Boulder (UCB) was conducted to investigate factors related to patrons’ satisfaction with electronic collections. It was found that a respondent’s discipline was not related to his or her satisfaction with the Libraries’ electronic collection, nor was the frequency with which the respondent used the Libraries’ facilities or used commercial search engines. The factors significantly related to users’ satisfaction with electronic collections were the frequency with which they used the Libraries’ Web site, and, most interestingly, the physical library they most often visited.

Multicultural E-Resources: An Exploratory Study Of Resources Held By Arl Libraries, Charlene Maxey-Harris

The purpose of this study was to discover what libraries belonging to the Association of Research Libraries are subscribing to in support of multicultural and diversity research. A list of bibliographic and digital collections was created and searched for in the online public access catalogs of academic and research libraries in 2005 and 2008. A list of recommended e-resources was derived based on the ownership of Association of Research Libraries member libraries and Magazine for Libraries 2006 and 2009. During the three-year interval there was a 45.8 percent increase in subscriptions to the multicultural and diversity databases.

Frontline reference librarians purvey their skills in a variety of reference service models. These range from the traditional to the tiered to the information commons (IC) to the learning commons (LC). Libraries might use one pure form of any model, a hybrid model, or a model in the process of transformation. A few libraries with space and funding have fully adopted the latest model, the LC. An examination of transformations to the LC indicates that frontline reference librarians can to some extent effect changes in their professional environments.

There has been a flurry of interest in programs for collection development through patron-initiated requests. However, some librarians have been concerned that such methods run the risk of producing idiosyncratic collections with poor usage and poor use value. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries have operated such a program through the Interlibrary Loan Department over a fiveyear period. The following study assesses the relative performance of the program’s interlibrary loan–acquired monographs in terms of prices paid per rates of annual circulation, relative use at the topical level, and annual rates of circulation.

The Treaty of Fort Laramie with Sioux, etc., 1851 was an important transaction between a number of American Indian tribes and the federal government. However, because of administrative mishandling by the latter, there has been sustained but unwarranted confusion over whether the treaty was a valid one. Uncertainty led to the use of a brief note in the Statutes at Large, at 11 Stat. 749, instead of the treaty’s full text as the law of the land. This article aims to bring into light the prevailing evaluation culture in university libraries of Pakistan with specific reference to physical collections. Using survey method, an attempt has been made to explore the status and practices of collection evaluation in university libraries of Pakistan. The study finds out that despite all the insistence for making systematic evaluation at international level, this practice is not common in Pakistan. In majority of the cases, only some informal, unplanned and old-fashioned methods are being used to get feedback. An important, overlooked moral contribution of libraries and librarians to the community is the provision of support for autonomy. Philosophers have long considered autonomy a primary moral value, essential to living a flourishing life. Although library scholarship has not often engaged deeply with the philosophical discourse surrounding autonomy, libraries and librarians are uniquely positioned to enact many of the methods for encouraging it. By considering the moral significance of library services as autonomy-building activities, libraries and librarians can provide a valuable social support for their communities, individual users, and ultimately themselves.

Assessment continues to grow in importance in academic libraries, yet no one has delineated what skills and resources are needed among librarians to carry out assessment activities. This study was a first attempt to describe how library leaders view the skills and resources they need to do assessment. Based on a survey of academic library directors, our findings show that directors rate themselves highly on conceptual skills, but are less confident on methodological skills. Directors also rely heavily on their staff members and campus institutional research and assessment offices to help them with assessment projects.

This is a report on a readership survey carried out among the senior secondary students at Allahabad City, U.P. (India). The present study explores the reading habits of senior secondary students in Allahabad City. The present study demonstrates the various aspects of reading habits like the motives of study, reading materials borrowed from library, time spent for the serious reading, use reference materials, languages of newspaper that read daily, sections of newspapers read, place of reading, and to develop some suggestions for solution of the problem. Suggestions have been given to make the service more beneficial in the school libraries.

A Comparison Of Term Clusters For Tokenized Words Collected From Controlled Vocabularies, User Keyword Searches, And Online Documents, Elaine Maytag Nowick, Daryl Travnicek, Kent M. Eskridge, Stephen Stein

Tokenized word terms were collected from three sources: controlled vocabulary headings, user keyword searches, and html documents all dealing with issues in water quality. Distances were calculated between word pairs using the Jacquard formula. Distances from the three sources were compared using Spearman rank correlations and clusters were calculated on distances transformed for non-normality using the SAS pseudo-centroid method. Word pair distances from controlled vocabularies were more closely correlated to keyword searches than document distances were to users’ keywords. This study examined the acquisition and use of library resources in Bells University of Technology using statistical record assessment. A descriptive survey design was used for the study. Data was obtained from the library statistics which had been compiled and collated by the staff in the readers' services department over a five year period covering 2005/2006 – 2009/10. The data were analyzed using frequencies, bar charts, and percentages. In this exploratory study, the researcher reflects on personal experience as a student at an academic library over the course of one year of PhD study. Data were gathered using an autoethnographic methodology, and the reflections on these data are presented in the form of three two-minute video clips narrated with accompanying poems. This study assumes that the different paradigms and theories about information behaviour affect how the individual is understood within this system. These reflections raise questions about the influences our models have at ground level of the library profession and the people libraries claim to serve.

Information privacy is an important consideration when transitioning university collections from paper to electronic access. Yet the protection of -- and limits to -- student privacy regulations have rarely been addressed in the literature for online electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and its relevance to student work should be a consideration when widely distributing scholarship like e-portfolios, ETDs, and senior capstone projects. In this article, we share several campus approaches to FERPA and electronic student work.

Even An Ocean Away: Developing Skype-Based Reference For Students Studying Abroad, Sarah Faye Cohen, Andy Burkhardt

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to outline the development of a Skype-based, study abroad reference service.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper discusses the criteria used for technology and situates the project in the literature on study abroad reference services.

Findings – Using Skype, a free video-conferencing software, allows librarians to offer reference services to study abroad students effectively, easily, and without new technologies or significant cost.

Originality/value – The paper offers other librarians strategies for developing and launching similar programs and shares challenges encountered to prepare librarians for success in their own projects.

“Why Does Google Scholar Sometimes Ask For Money?” Engaging Science Students In Scholarly Communication And The Economics Of Information, Scott Warren, Kim Duckett

This article outlines instructional strategies for teaching students about scholarly communication and the economic realities that surround scientific information. Exposing students to the business side of academic communication provides a foundation for understanding how Google relates to library-subscription resources, how research is both shared and discovered, what the role of libraries is in providing access to costly information, and how disparities arise in information access. Such instruction contextualizes search tools such as article databases as well as Google Scholar, and thereby serves as an appropriate starting point for teaching students to use such tools.
