Baltic National Bibliographies Without The Book Chambers, Maira Bundza

The responsibilities of the Soviet era book chambers in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have almost all been incorporated into the national libraries of the three Baltic States, since they regained independence in 1991. This article will summarize the work with legal deposit copies, current and retrospective national bibliographies, indexes, publishing statistics, ISSN, ISBN and ISMN agencies, and online databases in each country. All three Baltic States have made tremendous progress in making their materials available to researchers worldwide, though full text access is still very limited.

College students of the Millennial generation present a new challenge to educators -- Millennials’ needs and expectations are different from preceding generations. They have a different relationship with technology which translates into different learning styles, and most importantly, different expectations of when, where, and how to learn.

Website accessibility is a very real and pressing issue for public libraries internationally. Tim Berners-Lee credited with founding the Web, states "The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect." (Henry & McGee, 2010). There is wide-spread support for adherence to the Web Content Advisory Guidelines Version 1.0 and 2.0 (WCAG) throughout Federal, State and Local levels of government in Australia. Many software development projects fail because they do not meet the needs of users, are over-budget, and abandoned. To address this problem, the user requirements elicitation process was modified based on principles of Appreciative Inquiry. Appreciative Inquiry, commonly used in organizational development, aims to build organizations, processes, or systems based on success stories using a hopeful vision for an ideal future. Spanning five studies, Appreciative Inquiry was evaluated for its effectiveness with eliciting user requirements. The Sunk Cost fallacy is a biased committed when individuals base their decisions to stop or continue a course of action solely on past irrecoverable invested costs (i.e., monetary or time-related). Individuals' susceptibility to the Sunk Cost fallacy has been justified as the need to try to avoid appearing wasteful, to avoid appearing inconsistent, to learn a lesson from and to punish self for a poorly made decision. A study by Bornstein and Chapman (1995) evaluated these justifications along with a normative response and found statistical differences among all justifications. The purpose of this study was to examine student recall of facts, along with enjoyment of reading and interest in the topic when using graphic novels as compared to illustrated nonfiction prose in social studies content area reading. Twenty-two fifth grade students (13 f, 9 m) in a public school in a Midwestern state participated in the study. Half of the students read about the Boston Massacre and Patrick Henry through graphic novels and read about Paul Revere and the Boston Tea Party with illustrated nonfiction texts, with the other half doing the opposite. Adapting the qualitative methodologies from Studying Students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester (Foster & Gibbons, 2007), the CalArts Student Behaviors and Habits (CASBAH) project undertook to learn holistically about the behaviors of art school students. Our research question was, “How do students in an artistic and nontraditional setting view and act on the process of discovery?” The CASBAH study utilized faculty interviews, student interviews, poster surveys, photo surveys, online surveys, and focus groups. This presentation is a review of reports on information literacy and the workforce. There is a substantial body of literature on information literacy in K-16 educational settings, but there is much less literature on implications for the workplace and job-related lifelong learning. The topical categories of the reports are: the importance of information literacy for the workforce; how information literacy differs in work and educational settings; and barriers to information literacy in the workplace. The presentation concludes with recommendations for practice and for further research.

Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) Reference Department redesigned their freshman English library instruction so that all freshmen get a consistent and measurable experience using the library. In order to move to a more outcomes-based approach that measures what students can do with the information literacy skills we teach them, the Department designed an interactive five-module introduction to the research process that can be evaluated. All teaching materials were inserted onto a “LibGuide” content management system. Students sequentially complete an “English 110 Library Research Worksheet” as they work through the five-module research process and receive library instruction.

Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) Reference Department designed a rubric to measure student learning outcomes for freshman English. Students sequentially completed an "English 110 Library Research Worksheet” during library instruction. The rubric which is set up to analyze learning outcomes from parts of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is applied to collected student worksheets. The Department undertook a multi-step process to try to calibrate the rubric and achieve consensus estimates of inter-rater reliability. This article draws from the literature and best practices to explore this new direction. This editorial discusses the need for the library profession to promote information literacy in the workforce of their own libraries. There are growing concerns among employers in the general public about the preparation of employees for the demands of 21st century jobs. Although the library profession has led the development and promotion of information literacy in educational settings, there is little evidence in the literature that libraries foster information literacy in their employees, If library organizations support an information literacy workforce, the library can become a model, showing parent organizations the power of information literacy in the work environment.

This editorial questions why information literacy is not yet fully integrated in educational programs and issues a call to action. There is evidence that the way that things have been done in the past to accomplish this is not working. The article advocates for using results of studies such as Project Information Literacy to motivate new, non-traditional ways of thinking about the problem.

A master’s comprehensive University is planning a learning commons to support undergraduate learning. The planning process included a literature review, site visits to commons, consultations with experts in the field, discussions with campus specialists, and surveys of patrons. The literature reports two primary forms of data gathering for learning commons: interview/observation and purposive surveys. This report describes the findings of a survey conducted to determine students’ perceptions of services relevant in learning commons. The findings indicated that the students wanted help with their information processing needs.

Begun in 2007 as a way to create efficiencies and keep the career offices better informed of efforts across campus, it has grown into a comprehensive resource sharing cooperative. Manufacturing Menopause: An Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Menopause And Information Content On Pharmaceutical Web Sites, Deborah H. Charbonneau

Consumer-targeted prescription drug advertising serves as an interesting lens through which we can examine the portrayal of menopause in online drug advertisements. The aim of this study was to explore the portrayal of menopause on web sites sponsored by pharmaceutical companies for hormone therapies (HT). To unravel this question, a qualitative content analysis of web sites for FDA-approved hormone therapies was employed. A total number of 608 printed pages of web site content from eight web sites (N=8) were analyzed. Key findings elucidated how menopause was portrayed on the pharmaceutical web sites.
