The Anchor, Volume 121.16: February 27, 2008, Hope College

The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Proposal For Library Staff Exchange With Southwest Jiao Tong University, Courtright Memorial Library

Otterbein China Librarians Exchange Program Documentations and Publications

In this memorandum to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the library director Lois Szudy and System Librarian Jane Wu propose a trial library staff exchange between Otterbein College and Southwest Jiao Tong University in Chengdu, China. Building upon a prior successful exchange with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this initiative seeks to deepen our global academic collaborations.

The benefits of such exchanges are manifold, encompassing cooperative teaching and research, student and faculty exchanges, summer internships, and enrichment of global learning programs. These collaborations significantly contribute to Otterbein's international reputation and capacity to attract international students.

Information literacy modules produced by academic libraries to facilitate the research process typically use the criteria of relevance, timeliness, reliability, coverage and accuracy to assess the various information resources undergraduate students use to write research reports. These same criteria are applied to the wide spectrum of research sources that may range from popular magazines to research journal articles.

In the field of Cognitive Social Psychology, many research questions necessitate the use of psycholinguistic stimuli (word lists, paired-associates, sentences, stories, etc.) as their treatments. The Reference Interview: Theories And Practice, Stephanie Willen Brown

The reference librarian's task is to translate the patron's question into one that can be answered with the library's resources. The first element of that task is to know what the patron wants; the second is to know what resources the library has and how to use them. Reference librarians must learn continuously throughout their careers, both because new resources become available, but also because patrons present questions requiring new resources. This article will focus on how to determine what kind of information the patron needs through the reference interview.

A Sentence Completion Task To Familiarize Students With Word Problem Structures, Jose A. Montelongo, Roberta Herter

Library Scholarship

Marshall (1995) provided a classification scheme for arithmetic word problems. The most frequent types of word problems are the change, group, compare, restate, and vary situations. Change situations tell a story in which there is a change in a measurable quantity of a particular thing. Group word problems ask the solver to use combine members of the same classification before performing a mathematical calculation upon these. Compare situations require a student to complete mathematical calculations upon two or more things and to contrast their quantities for a conclusion. Dialectic Schemes In Thesaurus Creation, Maziar Amirhosseini

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article looks at the logical relationships between the categories that have led to the development of the thesaurus, including the historical origins of thesaurus construction. The research uses the dialectical, logical relationships of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. Each step in the dialectic of thesaurus creation includes subjective and objective thought as part of the thesis and antithesis, resolved by the more absolute thinking of the synthesis.

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Book Aid International (Bai) On The Development Of Libraries In Kano State, Nigeria, Ahmed Mohammed

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study looks at the impact of Book Aid International (BAI) on the development of libraries in Kano State, Nigeria. The study population is eighteen libraries that are benefiting from the BAI program. A questionnaire was used to obtain data. The respondents strongly believe that BAI is beneficial, and that it has improved library collections and services. Recommendations for programme donors and the beneficiaries are included.

Implementing Universal Basic Education (Ube) Through The Strategic Provision Of School Library Services, Amanze Onyebochi Unagha

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper examines the ways school libraries can provide services for the successful implementation of Universal Basic Education (UBE) in Nigeria. After tracing the origin and objectives of UBE, it discusses the concept of school libraries and their role in education. Library services are crucial to the success of UBE in Nigeria. They include library space in all schools, extension services, adequate and relevant information sources, recreational reading material, library work and study rooms, and resource-sharing between school libraries and public libraries.
