The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Winston Bridges came to the campus as an assistant professor of education in 1970. He taught primarily in the area of social foundations of education. When Dean Karen Spear departed for Colorado in June 1990, Bridges—then coordinator of the College of Education at USF St. Petersburg—accepted an appointment to serve as interim dean. Bridges continued the focus on interdisciplinary studies started by deans Lowell Davis and Karen Spear. Shortly after H. This month’s most popular article, “RODENTS AS A FOOD SOURCE,” (from the Proceedings of the Fourteenth Vertebrate Pest Conference 1990) was referenced by food blogger Jesse Sharrad at http://corduroyorange.com/?p=273 and experienced 50 to 100 hits daily for several weeks afterwards. Interesting article, but lately I’ve been eyeing the campus squirrels and thinking “Brunswick stew”.

The article discusses opportunities for academic libraries concerning the development of repository programs for Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). Benefits for students and universities are explored, including the expressive qualities of ETDs, increased visibility, operational efficiency, and knowledge-sharing. Issues for administrative discussion are examined, with particular focus given to copyright management. Challenges connected to open access publishing and the role of UMI Dissertation Publishing are also explored. The article provides a list of university ETD Web sites.

Publications

The No Child Left Behind Act was officially signed on January 8, 2002, receiving broad bipartisan support in Washington. This documentary explores the debate over whether reliance on standardized tests could do more harm than good for the nation’s students and schools. It specifically looks at developments in Virginia, California, and Massachusetts. Interviews included administrators, educators, students, politicians, and test-designers to discuss their views concerning standardized testing in the public school systems. Prior to the 2002 legislation states had already begun looking at standardized testing as a means of evaluating students and teachers.

In May 1973, York College President Milton G. Bassin donated 495 volumes to the York College Library, most of which were written in either Hebrew or Yiddish, with some also in Aramaic. The books belonged to his father, Max Bassin (who was sometimes referred to as Morris, Moses, or Moshe), who was a noted anthologist of Yiddish poetry.

Bibliometrically Mapping Team Cognition Literature: A Co-Citation Analysis, Ryan A. Howell

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers investigating team cognition must source and review a challenging set of relevant, mature literature from a diverse array of academic disciplines. Such disciplines may include psychology, management, information science, military science, anthropology, and nursing science, etc. This thesis summarizes an effort to bibliometrically map team cognition literature using an author co-citation analysis methodology. The work began with a traditional literature review that identified key authors who were published in peer-reviewed journals.
