Cross-Disciplinary Prospecting: Educational Technology Offers Up Gold For Library And Information Science Curricula, Michael J. Miller

This article provides an overview of the current trends in information and communication technology affecting library services and recommends how, because of these trends, library and information science (LIS) curricula should turn an inquisitive, interdisciplinary eye toward the field of educational technology. Gaps in current LIS professional training and practice are cited, curriculum standards in LIS and educational technology programs are described and compared, and examples are presented to demonstrate how educational technology pedagogy and practice help to successfully augment library skills, service, and practice.

Technical Services Reports and Statistics

RefWorks is a subscription-based, online software product that helps researchers save, organize, and format bibliographic citations. This report provides monthly statistics on the usage of RefWorks by the URI community for 2004-2005. Data provided include total monthly users, new users, repeat users, total sessions per month, average sessions per user, total references added, and average number of references added per user. Note that only one month's data are available for 2004-2005.

QUESTION: How have theorists and empirical researchers treated the human tendency to avoid discomforting information?

DATA SOURCES: A historical review (1890-2004) of theory literature in communication and information studies, coupled with searches of recent studies on uptake of genetic testing and on coping strategies of cancer patients, was performed.

STUDY SELECTION: The authors' review of the recent literature included searches of the MEDLINE, PsychInfo, and CINAHL databases between 1992 and summer of 2004 and selective, manual searches of earlier literature. Objective. The public has a high interest in seeking personal genetic information, which holds implications for health information seeking research and health care policy. Rapid advances in cancer genetics research promise early detection, prevention and treatment, yet consumers may have greater difficulty finding and using the information they may need to make informed decisions regarding their personal health and the future of their families.

This booklet accompanied the exhibit which marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass (1855). The items on display were drawn chiefly from the Thomas Cooper Library's Joel Myerson Collection of Nineteenth-Century Literature, and this booklet records the arrangement and explanatory text of the exhibit as actually mounted. The exhibit is arranged chronologically, to show the growth and development of Whitman's poetry, and the effects on his books of his own close involvement in their production. Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Before the rising popularity of the Internet in the mid 1990s, Scott Memorial Library, like most others, used printed newsletters to inform users about new resources and services. The JEFFLINE Forum, our attempt to resuscitate the Library's newsletter by employing the technical advantages-and increasing presence-of the Web, debuted in October of 1999. The fifth anniversary of the Forum seemed like a good time to look back at its evolution and to examine some of the challenges inherent in developing and sustaining a library newsletter.

A chronology of known facts concerning the life and writings of American writer Thomas Pynchon, author of the novels V., The Crying of Lot 49, Gravity’s Rainbow, Vineland, and Mason & Dixon.
