This article describes how a small liberal arts college library created a digital library using existing staff and financial resources. The Hekman Digital Archive (HDA) was created using a digital media archive module of the library's integrated library system, and is maintained by one library staff member with the help of numerous student assistants.

As the global economy grew in the latter half of the 20th Century, the demand for the mobility of engineers greatly increased. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), an accreditation agency serving primarily the United States, began to look at engineering programs outside of the United States with the intent of establishing recognized reciprocity. Through the Washington Accord, first established in 1989, mutual recognition agreements were signed with accrediting agencies in several countries. Key success factors for managing change and transformation in the University Library are discussed. In the three year rolling development plan (3YRDP) the importance of sharing and contracting the underlying library philosophy with university management is emphasized. The rolling development plan covers the strategic intention of the library as well as its social and task dimensions. Under the strategic intention, the strategic base of the library and the importance of preparing strategic points of support are pointed out. In previous papers delivered at IATUL Conferences, I described the TriUniversity Group (TUG) library collaboration. I spoke of the advantages and reported that three academic libraries, large (University of Waterloo) medium (University of Guelph) and small (Wilfrid Laurier University) were working together creatively to address a number of issues: • Remote storage of little used library materials, • Development of a web-based, unified and integrated online “catalogue”, • Joint purchases of online resources, and • Rationalization of information resources This pioneering collaborative undertaking, initiated in 1995, is now widely emulated, with some success. Griffith University’s Division of Information Services provides integrated library, information technology and flexible learning services to Griffith’s community of approximately 30,000 staff and students. A Division-wide restructure in 2001 led to the creation of InfoServices, a new organisational unit created from members of library and information technology front-line staff. This unit was presented with the challenge of answering the majority of customer inquiries related to the Division’s products and services. InfoServices seeks to resolve 80% of all customer inquiries at first contact, regardless of product. Digital imaging projects of the G.W. Blunt White Library at Mystic Seaport Museum, funded by the Library of Congress and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, are explained and demonstrated with comments on how the Library has incorporated the projects’ outcomes into its workflow. Upon reapplying for additional funds, the Library was asked by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to instead reach out to scholars in the field and determine what their actually needs were in developing new scholarship. The Library hosted a conference and developed a survey to measure the scholars’ needs. Methodology and preliminary results are discussed.

This paper reviews three years of data measuring students' immediate reactions to a computer-assisted learning package in information skills and reports on work in progress to establish a more comprehensive programme of evaluation which will assess the medium term impact on learning of both the courseware itself and the way the courseware is delivered to students. The GAELS courseware was developed in the late 1990s as part of a collaborative project between the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, with funding from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. The authors conducted a survey of distance librarian-administrators at Association of Research Libraries member libraries who plan for and manage distance learning library services. Survey questions included: What resources and services do ARL libraries currently offer to distance learners? What changes are being planned for in the immediate future? With libraries experiencing flattened budgets, what will be the impact on distance learners? Findings from the survey will inform librarian- administrators and library deans/directors of the current state of, and emerging trends in, distance learning library services.

Presented at the 2004 IOLUG (Indiana Online Users Group) Spring Program, this presentation explored the implementation of the Turnitin.com plagiarism detection tool at the IUPUI: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Issues covered included: how the tool detects plagiarism, what it is searching, copyright and privacy concerns, and strengths and weakness of the tool’s detection capabilities.

The purpose of this survey investigation was to ascertain the degree of conformity of selected public library electronic pathfinder collections for children in the United States and Canada to assess format, components, and readability and whether the collections were effectively constructed to be used as starting points for further research. This research paper explains the relationship of instructional design models, information literacy skills, and the analysis of selected resources. The purpose of this study was to determine if public libraries in southern New Jersey have installed blocking software or filters on their Internet computers and, specifically, to find out what types of filters or blocking software they were currently using in their libraries. The study wanted to see how satisfied librarians were with their filters or blocking software. The study also looked at whether or not public libraries in southern New Jersey have written Acceptable Use Policies which define access to the Internet for some or all of their patrons, including children under the age of eighteen. The main objective of this study was to determine if southern New Jersey public high school media centers had reduced, increased, or left the same the number of print and electronic subscriptions to periodicals. The selected periodicals that were available online through EBSCOhost were compared to those purchased in print format by high school media specialists. Questionnaires were sent to 70 South Jersey high school media specialists, asking about their print and electronic periodical usage, and their storage procedures, if any, for back issues of periodicals. In 1995 the National Center for Educational Statistics, conducted a survey on young adult librarianship entitled, Services and Resources for Children and Young Adults in Public Libraries. The survey showed that while 23% of the patrons that used public libraries were YAs, ages 12-17, they lacked librarians, services, resources and areas designed specifically for their age group. The researcher conducted a 2004 survey based on the NCES 1995 study to compare results to see if there were any improvements.The researcher e-mailed 84 descriptive surveys to public library members of the SJRLC and NJYAC, the responses totaled 38, or …

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine New Jersey public libraries with budgets exceeding $3 million dollars and find out their sources of funding. In particular, with the financial climate of many state libraries' budgets being cut, the mailed questionnaire focused on whether 18 public libraries out of a selection of 21 libraries in New Jersey have established endowment funds or deferred giving plans. Results found that only a few libraries have funding other than local community tax revenue. Most library directors acknowledge that fundraising is a viable way to diversify their income, and that in concept it …

The purpose of this research was to examine the variety and levels of services provided to the clients of local Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) by selected medium-size and large public libraries in the Delaware Valley region. The twelve responding libraries reported a wide variety in the levels of service provided to the local small business community. Librarians reported participating with their local SBDC by providing facilities, reference materials, staff with special training and/or experience in business reference service, staff participation in programs, and combinations of these services. The purpose of this research was to determine how the electronic databases available in EBSCOhost, Primary Search, MasterFile Premier, and Searchasaurus, were being used in teaching information skills to the students in grades three through five. The study involved the media specialists who were members of South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative teaching in elementary schools serving grades three through five. A total of 103 surveys were mailed out with a total of 59 media specialists returning them.
