This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of a learning-centered library from the perspective of the libraries in the 12 Vanguard Learning Colleges which were participants in the Learning College Project sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College. New Frontiers In Collection Development Preparing To Meet New Standards, Gary R. Shook

This article describes the general policies which may be included in a comprehensive collection development policy, attempting to follow national guidelines. It also describes one approach to analyzing how well the library collection supports the various parts of the curriculum, and presents a technique to compare a library collection with peer libraries by subject majors. Finally, the "Collection Development Plan" section provides a format for stating an action plan to develop the collection based upon all of the information gathered.

Emeritus Faculty And Alumni As Volunteers In A University Archives: Planning For Success, Tamar Chute

Archivists use volunteers to arrange and describe collections, help with events and donor relations, and assist with reference activities. Volunteers may also work on projects outside the archives, such as oral histories, fundraising, or designing and creating web pages. They are usually enthusiastic and eager to help, and they can be a valuable addition to the archives staff. Volunteers may range from children to retirees, from novices to professionals with archival experience. Regardless of their age or level of knowledge, volunteers require supervision, detailed instructions, and often much patience.

The emergence of a global marketplace in education offers valuable partnership opportunities. Libraries in small developing countries often do not have a critical mass of library professionals to share knowledge and to provide advice and collegial support. This case study describes a World Bank funded “Link Institution Arrangement”, which established a library partnership between an academic library in Western Australia and one in the Republic of Maldives. The authors describe the state of libraries and the emerging library profession in the Maldives. This research project, designed for Iowa school library media specialists, principals, and state education and legislative decision-makers, provides quantitative guidelines for library media program budgets, collections, staffing and facilities in Iowa schools. Research repeatedly has shown a link between these elements of a quality school library program and higher student achievement scores. Historically, standards and guidelines have been used to improve school library media programs. Modeled after previous guidelines developed in Iowa, this project is entitled Plans for Progress into the 21st Century. In an effort to demystifY it, the panel will discuss questions about tenure review, the process of tenure review and how to prepare for it, a supervisor's perspective of a candidate up for tenure review along with examples of tenure portfolios.

Taking Assessment On The Road: Utah Academic Librarians Focus On Distance Learners, Allyson Washburn, Rob Morrison

This paper presents the results of focus groups conducted by Utah academic librarians at branch campuses in Utah. Librarians met with distance learners on-site to gain insights into their information-seeking behavior and to learn if they are using library services. Students rely heavily on the web for information and also utilize known resources in friends and family. Marketing and publicizing library services through classes and at the delivery sites is vital. Students appreciate the services libraries offer and strongly prefer face-face instruction and direct assistance from a librarian.

Some school staff may have an incomplete understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the school library media specialist. This research project, designed for school staff to view shows the activities of school library media specialists. The project is set up in a thirteen minute video project. The research project also consists of a survey of three Iowa schools to see how the perceptions of school staff compared to what media specialists actually do in a day. The purpose of this research was to test the effectiveness of the computer program, ClassWorks Gold (CW) in improving student reading and writing scores. ClassWorks Gold is a computer program that merges parts of 150 commercially available language arts program with a built-in assessment and internal e-mail system.

Garfield Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a grant from the Iowa Department of Education for the purchase and implementation of CW as a supplement to regular language arts classroom instruction. Through a survey of academics at Edith Cowan University, Australia, this study explored their usage of and attitudes towards academic electronic journals (EJs). The data provided insights into the way academics were using EJs at the time of the study and their thoughts on how they will use them in the future. The emergence of academics publishing their work in EJs is a fairly recent phenomenon compared to the established tradition of publishing in paper-based journals. Many publishers have also begun to replace paper journals with electronic ones and many librarians have begun incorporating EJs into their resource collections. Librarians …
