Each of our fall semester book displays will coincide with Cooper Library’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

The first of these displays features 1966 New York Times best sellers.

With subject matter varying from UFOs to Sammy Davis Jr. to romance to World War II, this display is sure to have something you’ll want to check out. Located on the bookshelf to the right of the Information Services desk, the display will be up all month.

In accordance with GLBT Book Month and the American Library Association’s response to the Orlando massacre, we have put together a Read with Pride display, which includes 2014-2016 Stonewall Award winners and nominees as well as titles included on the Rainbow Book List for Children and Teens and the Over the Rainbow List for Adult Readers from those same years.

The focus of this presentation is to report findings from growing partnerships between faculty whose primary focus is classroom teaching and faculty librarians, revealing connections between our disciplines and co-designing curricula that recognize the commonalities in pedagogy, theories, and professional practice. Information literacy and scholarly communication are combined in teaching and learning lessons, materials, and shared terminology. The presenter will encourage participants to reflect on why and how librarians invite students into the disciplines and to investigate ways of assessing student learning.

2015 Slac Presentation: Correlation Between Library Instruction And Student Retention, Mary O'Kelly

Grand Valley State University Libraries has found a statistically significant positive correlation between librarian-led instruction and student retention. The libraries’ Head of Instructional Services and the university's Institutional Analysis department worked together to connect library instruction with student-level data and then analyze that data over several academic years. This presentation will outline the data collection process, analysis methods, limitations, and outcomes of a longitudinal study.

The Open Parks Network serves the global parks community by providing the information, tools, and solutions to support the stewardship of the natural and cultural assets of protected areas. To date, over 350,000 items and 1.5 million pages of material has been digitized as part of this project. This presentation details the project's background and strategies used for digitization and metadata creation. Additionally, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Donor Card Collection project is detailed. This webinar presentation was conducted as part of the LYRASIS "Second Friday" series.

Historical Poinsettia Display, Maggie Mason Smith

The poinsettia has undergone a remarkable transformation since the day some 800 years ago when the Aztecs plucked it from the wilds of Mexico to decorate their courtyards and medicate the infirm.

From November 9 to 28, wild, heirloom, and modern poinsettias in full flower will grace the lobby of Clemson University’s Cooper Library for everyone to appreciate. Banners and historical documents will accompany the display to help guide visitors along the implausible route the humble poinsettia traveled from gangly Mexican shrub to iconic Christmas flower.

National Native American Heritage month is a time to honor the contributions, achievements, sacrifices, and cultural and historical legacy of the original inhabitants of the United States.

A wide range of library materials have been pulled and placed on display to coincide with Native American Heritage month. Included are works on Native American history, art, sports, Native American literature and lore, contemporary fiction including Native American characters, music, health, and law.

Infographics are on the rise as a communication medium in libraries. We live in a visual world; we are visual creatures, naturally drawn to graphical representations. Using free web applications, librarians and their support staff can now easily create beautiful and compelling infographics which can serve multiple purposes in the library environment. From community outreach and marketing of programs and collections to internal use as a presentation aid and everything in between, infographics can help us relay important information in an attractive way for little to no cost. Find Your Park Metadata, Rachel Wittmann, Christopher Vinson, Joshua Morgan

The Open Parks Network (OPN) project digitized over 330k items from U.S. national and state parks. While the mass digitization effort was a logistically challenging operation, ensuring metadata for this material added another layer of complexity this offsite-managed project. In the best case scenario, the parks provided existing descriptive metadata, but this still lacked preferred elements. In many cases, digitized material had never been cataloged by the park.

To orchestrate adequate descriptive metadata, OPN employed tactics to catalog this large-scale project. This session encourages an exchange of experiences and ideas from others when faced with similar situations.
