In 2013, the College of Art, Architecture, and Humanities hosted the first annual Road Scholars lecture series.

The Road Scholars series brings professors from the Tiger’s ACC football rivals to Clemson to present their current research, which is followed by a response from a Clemson humanities faculty member. This year, lectures will be held October 2nd, October 9th, October 16th, November 6th, and November 20th.

Disabilities are a challenge, not a limitation. With that in mind, this display contains information on several disabilities including deafness, autism, cerebral palsy, blindness, and Asperger's. Also included are aspects related to disabilities such as inclusive education, discrimination and sociology of disability.

National Endowment Of The Arts & Humanities Display, Maggie Mason Smith

On September 29, 1965, the National Endowment for the Humanities was established to “encourage the development of the humanities by supporting research and awarding fellowships, strengthening teaching of the humanities, and fostering public use and enjoyment of the humanities.”

This display features works produced by current and former faculty members who received NEH grants; in most cases, the works are directly related to the grant received.

Freshman Summer Reading Display, Maggie Mason Smith

Karen Joy Fowler’s latest work, We are all Completely beside Ourselves, is this year’s Freshman Summer Reading selection.

Using this work as a foundation, a display of further research and leisure reading material has been set up in Cooper Library.

On July 15th, author, editor, and professor Edgar Lawrence Doctorow died at the age of 84.

With awards and honors spanning nearly four decades, Doctorow was described as one of the most important American novelists of the 20th century.

A display of items by or based on works by Doctorow is currently located atop the New Books shelving on the 4th floor of Cooper Library; the items will be on display throughout the month and are available for checkout at the Information Services Desk.

Many academic librarians are required to publish as part of the promotion and tenure process. And if they are not, they surely consult with faculty who are. Often, it is not enough to simply have published works, but one must also demonstrate the impact of those works. Luckily, there are strategies you can use to bolster the visibility and impact of your work. This presentation will cover author's rights, negotiating publication agreements, open access publishing, and free resources you can use to boost the visibility of your work.

Both institutional repositories and cultural heritage institutions have broadly defined collection development policies. As such, many collections could appropriately reside in both. However, at many institutions digital libraries that support cultural heritage collections are often supported by CONTENTdm, while institutional repository initiatives are supported by another platform--in Clemson's case, DigitalCommons. Librarians at Clemson University identified several key collections that fit both the scope of its institutional repository and digital library. In the History Channel series Vikings Ragnar Loðbrok tells his brother Rollo he wants to sail west to raid the rich lands there. His brother points out that no one can sail across the open water. In this scene Ragnar pulls out two tools that while being interesting in the development of the story are both also historically factual. This paper will discuss these two tools, the sȯl-skuggafjöl and the sólarsteinn, as well as the bearing dial and a more observational technique of polar mirages used by the early Norse sailors as they explored the North Atlantic waters.

Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. Clemson’s Department of English is hosting its 8th Annual Literary Festival Wednesday, March 25th through Friday, March 27th.
