Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives are becoming commonplace as a strategy to address bias, racism, discrimination, oppression, and privilege in the historic record and improve discovery and access to rare and unique materials. From online embeds to interactive displays, timelines can serve many purposes and tell powerful stories. In this panel librarians discuss collaboration and how to bring history to life through displays, events and online platforms for engaging students and preserving community milestones. Four of our favorite tools for creating digital timelines and gathering content will be shared including Prezi, TikiToki, TimeToast, and Piktochart. Comparisons will be given based on cost, technical limitations, and general ease of use. Specific examples will also be shared and discussed.

For years we have offered our EBSCO discovery layer service (EDS) as a secondary search tool in addition to our traditional online catalog (GAVEL) linking to both from the library website. However, the traditional catalog search, also known as “Classic GAVEL”, is always listed first while EDS, also known as “GAVEL & Beyond”, is listed second. Although maintenance has continued for populating EDS with library records on a daily basis, customization for this interface and sharing it with our users has not been prioritized. Last September, the Dean of Libraries created the Campus Feedback Task Force to “develop a process by which Clemson Libraries [could] solicit online and in-person feedback from students, faculty and staff on campus.” In response, Task Force members prepared a marketing strategy and three methods of soliciting feedback: online via our 10 Days to Have Your Say blog and social media, and in-person through tabling across campus. In this session, panelists from UGA Law Library take turns sharing an alphabetically organized catalog of favorite tools, tips and general ideas including library displays, social media, and face-to-face offerings. At the close of the presentation attendees will have a chance to ask questions, participate in an open discussion about what has worked or not for them and why, and take a handout of our complete A to Z guide with resource links and examples.

Assessing Students’ Critical Thinking About Digital Information Via Statistical Analysis, Kim L. Ranger

Think of statistical analysis as a way to advance student learning and improve teaching activities. This may be done with a single course if the analysis is conducted over multiple sections and/or semesters, and is also achievable by librarians teaching single sessions. We will delve into informed learning design to achieve critical thinking, digital literacy, and information literacy through the process of fact checking a website by searching (lateral reading), skimming (click restraint), and double-checking (verification). Do scaffolded activities really build on each other, i.e., are they statistically dependent or independent? Consult statisticians or statistics students to find out.

Grand Valley State University Libraries conducted its first diversity residency search in the summer of 2018, which integrated recently developed inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. A baseline understanding of cognitive theory and educational psychology concepts is critical to successful student learning. With librarians in all settings providing more teaching and training than ever, designing educational experiences with these concepts in mind will result in greater retention and understanding for their patrons. This program will discuss five important ideas from cognitive learning science and give examples of how librarians and other information professionals can incorporate those theories into their instructional offerings. The Creative Inquiry program combines engaged learning and undergraduate research at Clemson University. This project challenged a Creative Inquiry class to produce a mini-documentary film through research in the Special Collections of the Latinx community's early histories; interviewing students, alumni, faculty, and staff; and using the Libraries' Adobe Digital Studio.

Libraries are at the forefront of creating rich quality metadata to ensure communities can access, learn, and understand their shared histories. The Metadata and Monographic Resources Team (MMRT) is tasked with describing and providing access points to Clemson Libraries’ Digital Collections. Metadata decisions made by MMRT affect how community members discover, access, and use these materials. Photographic images, in particular, pose challenges if they lack descriptive information or historical context. If descriptions are provided, they often align with the historically white male majority, naming high level individuals and leaving out minority and marginalized peoples.
