Ascending Bloom's Pyramid: Fostering Student Creativity And Innovations In Academic Library Spaces, Mark Bieraugel, Stern Neill

Our research examined the degree to which behaviors and learning associated with creativity and innovation were supported in five academic library spaces and three other spaces at a mid-sized university. Based on survey data from 226 students, we apply a number of statistical techniques to measure student perceptions of the types of learning and behavior associated with the selected spaces. We found that the on-campus makerspace located outside the library encouraged the most innovative behaviors and exploration of new ideas. Within the library, collaboration rooms were the best spaces for encouraging creativity. There is an opportunity for the academic library …

Expertise in searching and evaluating scientific literature is a requisite skill of trained scientists and science students, yet information literacy instruction varies greatly among institutions and programs. To ensure that science students acquire information literacy skills, robust methods of assessment are needed. Here, we describe a novel tool for longitudinal, crossover assessment of literature-searching skills in science students and apply it to a cross-sectional assessment of literature-searching performance in 145 first-year and 43 senior biology majors. Subjects were given an open-ended prompt requiring them to find multiple sources of information addressing a particular scientific topic. A blinded scorer used a …

The first Golden Age of Mystery was the 20 year span between the two world wars, from 1919 to 1939. Even after almost a century, its writers still remain familiar names with popular titles. What these Golden Age writers and their stories shared in common were three major themes: they each had a Great Detective in charge, who was a larger-than-life character whose deductive brain solved the murder and/or mystery, a puzzle that would stump the average person. Web-Scale Discovery: Impact On Library Database Web Page Views And Usage, Zebulin Evelhoch

Web page views of databases by title and databases by subject pages, in conjunction with COUNTER Database Report 1 and Journal Report 1 statistics, were examined to determine what impact a migration to Primo, a Web-scale discovery layer, had at Central Washington University Brooks Library. The analysis determined that the first year post-migration (2015) compared to the two years pre-migration (2013–14) saw a decline in Web page views of database Web pages, journal full-text article requests, and database record views and result clicks. The implementation of Primo thus had a noticeable negative impact on both direct database access and overall …

Close attention to specific neighborhoods and historical inquiry into their organization opens windows into past and present constructions of knowledge. Swanton Pacific Ranch is an educational and research facility owned by the Cal Poly Corporation and managed by the Cal Poly State University (Cal Poly) College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The rancho’s original inhabitants included Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, as well as various European immigrants and their descendants; currently, the staff, faculty, and students of Cal Poly occupy the land. Each of these groups used the land’s rich environment for a variety of purposes from subsistence to financial and intellectual pursuits. This paper analyzes 37 Orbis Cascade Alliance members’ websites to determine ease of use across mobile devices. Based on that analysis and a literature review, guidance is provided on how libraries’ mobile websites may be improved. Websites were examined to determine ease of locating frequently accessed resources on mobile devices that were identified in the literature: contact information, hours, databases, library accounts, and search boxes. Scalability of websites on mobile devices was also evaluated and was found to be non-existent in nearly a quarter of examined libraries. This presentation introduces an ongoing study evaluating how the College of DuPage Library’s Information Literacy Instruction Program contributes to students meeting institutional General Education Information Literacy outcomes. Via a cross-sectional exploratory survey, faculty teaching English Composition II and Fundamentals of Speech Communications will provide subjective understanding of information literacy and fact-reporting on use of information literacy services provided by the library. This paper describes how Central Washington University Libraries (CWUL) interacted and collaborated with the Orbis Cascade Alliance (OCA) Shared Integrated Library System’s (SILS) Implementation Team and Ex Libris to process systems and data migration from Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Millennium integrated library system to Alma/Primo, Ex Libris’ next-generation library management solution and discovery and delivery solution. This presentation will also share how we worked collaboratively with the vendors, the Orbis Cascade Alliance Implementation Team, and the university IT.
