This presentation describes how we set up an SFTP server and enable patron load from the student information system, bursar out, invoices export to and payments import from the financial system. Experiences and lessons including communication with the vendor, peer institutions, university IT and other campus units will be covered.

Migrating To Alma: The Changing Role Of The Systems Librarian, Ping Fu

This presentation will discuss how the roles of systems librarians are expected to change in migrating to Alma from other ILS systems such as Voyager or Aleph. Since Alma is deployed via cloud computing, Ex Libris will centrally implement applications, upgrades, enhancements, etc. Consequently, the roles and responsibilities of systems librarians will be changing, and systems librarians should re-engineer themselves accordingly so that they will be able to support more critical issues in the library.

Streaming The Archives: Repurposing Systems To Jumpstart A Media Digitization Program, Talea Anderson

Presenting lessons learned by the archives at Central Washington University during the first year of its new media digitization program. This poster, presented in 2015 at ACRL's national conference, demonstrates how the archives jumpstarted its program by using available systems--an institutional repository and cloud-based streaming service--to disseminate digitized media. The poster presents advantages and disadvantages uncovered while using these repurposed systems, including consequences for metadata, workflow, interoperability, and discoverability.

This paper identifies organizational challenges faced by Social Science and Humanities (SSH) scholars when dealing with digital data and media, and suggests improved file naming practices in order to maximize organization, making files easier to find, more useable, and more easily shared. We argue that such skills are not formally discussed in the literature and therefore many scholars do not recognize the problem until they cannot locate a specific file or are sharing files with colleagues. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any distinct differences in e-book usage habits among students in the social sciences, technical fields and the arts. To complete this study, students from three different disciplinary areas were surveyed. The same nine questions were posed to each student group, with slight modifications to some questions based on the discipline.The results of this study show that students in each discipline have a preference for convenience and accessibility, whether material is print or electronic. The School of Nursing was planning to take ownership of the OA journal,Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care, and the new editor asked if the Libraries would assist with the editorial and managerial process. Erin Rushton, Web Services and Nursing Librarian, was named Managing Editor. She helps support the publishing system and prepares the pdfs for publication. Established in 1999, Borrow Direct (BD) is a partnership of nine independent U.S. universities and the Center for Research Libraries providing expedited delivery of print materials. Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for over two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. The University of Houston Digital Library (UHDL) is the point of virtual access for digitized cultural, historical and research materials for the university’s libraries. UHDL developed a "digital cart” system (DCS) that allow users to download high resolution images from its collections. The DCS records important information supplied by the user regarding the ultimate use of the downloaded images. Until now, no formal analysis of the transaction log for the DCS has been completed. They Can And They Should: Undergraduates Providing Peer Reference And Instruction, Brett B. Bodemer

Peer learning dynamics have proven powerful in collegiate contexts. These dynamics should be leveraged at the undergraduate level in academic libraries for reference provision and basic information literacy instruction. Drawing on the literature of peer learning, documented examples of peer reference and instruction in academic libraries, and preliminary evidence from current practice at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, this article provides support from the pedagogical standpoint that undergraduates not only can provide peer reference and instruction, but should. The relevance to other institutions and additional assessment methods for establishing the efficacy of peer instruction are also discussed.

This paper compares current responsibilities of systems librarians supporting the traditional ILS with anticipated responsibilities associated with supporting the next-generation ILS and examines how the roles of systems librarians will change in migrating to the next generation ILS from the traditional ILS. Will It Blend? A Practical Approach To Evaluating The Big Deal, David J. Beales, Nikki Demoville

This presentation describes a new approach to evaluating Big Deal packages. This approach enables librarians to negotiate with publishers more effectively by comparing the cost per download of package titles with the expected cost per download of competing publishers’ titles currently provided through interlibrary loan. The element of competition compensates for the effect of inflated journal list prices and, in some cases, will show that a Big Deal package is not the most cost effective way to provide access to articles.

MOOCs give librarians new opportunities to help shape the conversation about changes in higher education and to guide administrators, faculty, and students through these changes. To assume this role, librarians must understand the MOOCs landscape. Numerous stakeholders will have an interest in the massive intellectual property that ultimately resides in libraries' owned and licensed digital repositories. This analysis compares how the traditional integrated library system (ILS) and the next-generation ILS may impact system and technical services staffing models at academic libraries. The method used in this analysis is to select two categories of ILSs-two well-established traditional ILSs and three leading next-generation ILSs-and compare them by focusing on two aspects: (1) software architecture and (2) workflows and functionality. An increasing number of higher education institutions worldwide are requiring submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by graduate students and are subsequently providing open access to these works in online repositories. Faculty advisors and graduate students are concerned that such unfettered access to their work could diminish future publishing opportunities. This study investigated social sciences, arts, and humanities journal editors’ and university press directors’ attitudes toward ETDs. The findings indicate that manuscripts that are revisions of openly accessible ETDs are always welcome for submission or considered on a case-by-case basis by 82.8 percent of journal editors and 53.7 percent …
