This brochure accompanied the exhibit of works by Charlotte Perkins Gilman which was installed to welcome the Third International Charlotte Perkins Gilman Conference (March 30-April 3, 2001), an official USC Bicentennial Event. Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935), now best known for her story The Yellow Wallpaper, was also internationally recognized in her lifetime for her writing and lecturing in the fields of sociology and economics. All the books on display were drawn from the Gilman holdings in the Department of Rare Books & Special Collections.

This catalog is based on items displayed in early March 2001, for a class visit by Professor Pradeep Talwani’s undergraduate honors-college course in Solid Earth Geology. Most of the books have been in the library since the early 19th century, and some were among the books of Thomas Cooper (1759-1839), professor of chemistry and second president of South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina). These earlier acquisitions have been joined by items of geological interest in the C. Warren Irvin, Jr., Collection of Charles Darwin & Darwinana, donated to the library in 1996.

The University of South Carolina has received a major modern American literature collection. The Speiser and Easterling-Hallman Foundation Collection is centered on a superb collection of the books of Ernest Hemingway, with correspondence, transcripts, and proofs. There is additional strength in Maurice J. Speiser's correspondence with other friends and clients in literature, music, and the arts.

Observable Behavior For Implicit User Modeling: A Framework And User Studies, Jinmook Kim, Douglas W. Oard

This paper presents a framework for observable behavior that can be used as a basis for user modeling, and it reports the results of a pair of user studies that examine the joint utility of two specific behaviors. User models can be constructed by hand, or they can be learned automatically based on feedback provided by the user about the relevance of documents that they have examined. By observing user behavior, it is possible to obtain implicit feedback without requiring explicit relevance judgments. Four broad categories of potentially observable behavior are identified: examine, retain, reference, and annotate, and examples of …

Digital Image Managers: A Unique Partnership, Samantha K. Hastings

The University of North Texas and the African American Museum in Dallas are partners in a program designed to produce expert managers of digital images and information. The School of Library and Information Sciences in cooperation with the School of Visual Arts received a 1998 National Leadership Grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to build a collaborative program that includes a digital imaging laboratory and fellowships for students in a Certificate of Advanced Study Program. Powerize Server 1.0, developed by Powerize.com, is a content-based information filtering and retrieval system that presently uses a manually constructed user model known as a search profile. User modeling captures a user’s information needs. A user model can be constructed explicitly by the user or implicitly by exploiting feedback from the user about which documents are relevant. Implicit feedback can be inferred from user behavior without any additional work on the part of the user. The study reported in this paper investigates a way of implementing the implicit feedback technique of user modeling for the Powerize Server 1.0. Previous studies …

John Milton & Seventeenth Century Culture, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

This catalog outlined the exhibit that included twenty-three 17th-century Milton editions, most notably the first editions of Milton’s first prose work (1641), of his great defense of a free press Areopagitica (1644), of his first collection of poetry (1645), and of several political works of the 1650s. The exhibit included all four editions of Paradise Lost published during Milton’s lifetime. Complementing the books on display were engravings of English and Italian cities where Milton lived, studied and visited.

We describe the ongoing Electronic Library Project at the University of South Carolina. The goal of this project is the integration of digital resources within a traditional university research library. The first step was the development of an Electronic Science Library (ESL), followed by an Electronic Academic Library (EAL) which includes non-science subjects. We discuss the structure of these libraries and comment on our experiences with their implementation and use. The prototype implementation used static web pages, a technology which we knew would not scale up well. This implementation is being replaced by a database system using SQL Server and …

This brochure describes a Department of Rare Books & Special Collections exhibit of collection materials about camellias. The collection was formed by Mrs. Sheffield Phelps (Claudia Lea). The Phelps Memorial Collection of Garden Books was donated to the University by Miss Phelps in 1959 on her mother’s death, with additional donations in the 1970s after the dispersal of the Phelps home. The exhibition tells the story of how camellias were brought in the early 1700s from the Far East to Europe, and then to America, how they were identified and named, and how the major varieties were developed by 19th-century …

For a conference discussion of textual bibliographers and rare book librarians on the topic "Who needs textual studies?," this paper examines three different appearances of Alfred Tennyson's poem "Crossing the Bar": (1) a manuscript facsimile, (ii) its reuse as a hymn and in a giftbook; and (iii) the paperback Armed Services Edition distributed to US troops overseas during World War II, and argues that with the shift from literary studies to cultural studies such later "unauthoritative texts" have a new importance for scholars and students, and deserve increased attention from bibliographers, collectors, and rare book librarians. This brochure accompanied an exhibit mounted to mark the donation to the University of South Carolina by the People’s Republic of China of an extensive collection of Chinese-language books and reference works, totaling more than 200 volumes. Most of the books displayed were drawn from the library of the original South Carolina College, chartered in 1801. Also displayed were books about China from the personal library of Charles Pinckney (1757-1827), governor of South Carolina, and author of the “Pinckney draft” of the U.S. federal constitution.

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of writings by and about the Scottish poet James Macpherson. In addition to its outstanding holdings of Robert Burns and Burnsiana, the Library's G. Ross Roy Collection also encompasses extensive holdings of many other Scottish poets, from the early 18th century to the present. This exhibit provides a good opportunity to showcase the Roy Collection's extraordinary depth of material on a once widely-influential writer who deserves renewed critical attention.
