This catalog accompanied the exhibit and provides a permanent record of the Ralph Waldo Emerson bicentenary exhibition at the Thomas Cooper Library. Among the items in this exhibit are manuscripts, letters, first editions, association copies and memorabilia. On display are only a relatively small number of items which are in the Emerson holdings in the larger collection, but make clear the range, depth and quality of the outstanding materials that the Myerson Collection contains.

Searching Large Collections Of Recorded Speech: A Preliminary Study, Jinmook Kim, Douglas W. Oard, Dagobert Soergel

This paper reports on an exploratory study of the criteria searchers use when judging the relevance of recorded speech from radio programs and the attributes of a recording on which those judgments are based. Five volunteers each performed three searches using two systems (NPR Online and SpeechBot) for three questions and judged the relevance of the results. Data were collected through observation and screen capture, think aloud, and interviews; coded; and analyzed by looking for patterns. Criteria used as a basis for selection were found to be similar to those observed in relevance studies with printed materials, but the attributes …

Negotiating And Analyzing Electronic License Agreements, Duncan E. Alford

Faculty Publications

Mr Alford analyzes license agreements for electronic resources and suggests certain negotiation points to consider when entering into such an agreement. He begins by describing the results of a survey of law librarians about their preparation for and techniques used when negotiating electronic license agreements and the legal strategies used by publishers to support the licensing of electronic information. After reviewing selected principles of licensing issued by library associations and several standardized electronic license agreements, he identifies provisions in a typical agreement that should concern libraries and suggests certain arguments to use in negotiating terms more favorable to the library.

A Metadata Approach To Preservation Of Digital Resources: The University Of North Texas Libraries' Experience, Daniel Gelaw Alemneh, Samantha K. Hastings, Cathy Hartman

Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has entered into partnership agreements with federal and state agencies to ensure permanent storage and public access to a variety of government information sources. As digital resource preservation encompasses a wide variety of interrelated activities, the UNT Libraries are taking a phased approach to ensure the long-term access to its digital resources. Formulation of preservation policy and creation of preservation metadata for electronic files and digital collections are among the most important steps. This …

This catalogue records the first major exhibition outside Scotland about one of the most influential of modem Scottish literary publishers, Akros Publications, and its founder, Duncan Glen. Professor Glen, a graphic designer as well as poet and publisher, issued his first hand printed publication just forty years ago. Since then he has published over 300 separate items by many of the best known Scottish writers, in a variety of strikingly-designed and colorful publication formats. This catalog accompanied the exhibit of illustrated architectural books from the collections of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. The exhibit focused on the career of South Carolina architect Robert Mills (1781-1855), now best-known as architect of the Washington Monument. Several of the titles were among those that Mills himself listed as influencing his development as an architect, while other represented the major schools of architectural influence from which he drew his work.

What information are virtual visitors looking for on museum Web sites? This paper is a first step in a larger investigation into the informational value of museum Web sites. Scholars, teachers, students, museums staff, and museum visitors are the main categories of visitors examined in this study. Questions were asked of these museum audiences about their use of museum Web sites, museum databases, and other aspects of virtual visits.

The Use Of Speech Retrieval Systems: A Study Design., Jinmook Kim, Douglas W. Oard

What relevance criteria do users apply when selecting a speech recording? What attributes of the recording do they rely on for each criterion? This paper proses a qualitative research study design to explore those questions. A conceptual framework is presented, research questions are introduced, and the study design is described. The paper concludes with some observations on how the results of the study might inform the design of future systems.

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

Among the greatest treasures of the antebellum South Carolina College was its complete set of Audubon's huge double-elephant folio Birds of America (435 plates), published in parts between 1828 and 1838. The current exhibition traces the development of bird illustration, to give a context for viewing Audubon's achievement. The exhibition is arranged chronologically, starting with European bird illustrations of the sixteenth century and concluding with Audubon and other nineteenth century illustrators.

Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya Garashchuk, John C. Light

We introduce quasirandom distributed Gaussian bases (QDGB) that are well suited for bound problems. The positions of the basis functions are chosen quasirandomly while their widths and density are functions of the potential. The basis function overlap and kinetic energy matrix elements are analytical. The potential energy matrix elements are accurately evaluated using few-point quadratures, since the Gaussian basis functions are localized. The resulting QDGB can be easily constructed and is shown to be accurate and efficient for eigenvalue calculation for several multidimensional model vibrational problems. As more demanding examples, we used a 2D QDGB-DVR basis to calculate the lowest …
