This catalog accompanied the exhibit of writings by and about the Scottish poet James Macpherson (1736-1796) which welcomes to Thomas Cooper Library the eighth W. Ormiston Roy Memorial Visiting Research Fellow, Dr. Valentina Bold from the University of Aberdeen. It is not always fully appreciated that, in addition to its outstanding holdings of Robert Burns and Burnsiana, the Roy Collection also encompasses extensive holdings of many other Scottish poets, more particularly from the early 18th century onwards. Each summer the Ormiston Roy Fellowship, endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Roy in memory of Dr. Roy's grandfather, brings to the University a …

The Augusta Baker Collection Of African-American Children's Literature & Folklore, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

The Augusta Baker Collection of African-American Children's Literature and Folklore totals over 1600 volumes that highlight a wide range of subjects, genres, and formats of multicultural books for children, together with papers and illustrative material reflecting Baker's pivotal role in the field of children's librarianship. The collection is strong in reflecting the changes in subject matter of children's literature during the late twentieth century, as racial and ethnic folktales and legends were told and retold in numerous illustrated editions for new audiences. Latino/Latina materials, Native American, and Asian American literature and folktales for young people are well-represented.

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of portions of a gift of Ford material recently made to the University. Paul Leicester Ford (1865-1902) was the consummate bookman of the late nineteenth century. During his life, he successfully contributed to the world of letters through printing, bibliography, editing, scholarship and fiction. The collection contains almost forty books and pamphlets pertaining to Ford, including inscriptions, photos, and letters, as well as additional material by Noah Webster, Ford's great-grandfather, and other family members.

Angelica Singleton Van Buren (1816-1877), University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

The exhibit accompanied by this catalog was mounted to display books belonging to Angelica Singleton Van Buren (1816-1877) which were recently donated to the University. Mrs. Van Buren, the South Carolina-born daughter-in-law of President Martin Van Buren, lived with her husband in the White House during the latter part of Van Buren's term and served as Van Buren's hostess during this time. The books displayed are among a larger group of books from the Barnwell and Singleton families, all of which were donated by Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips of Florence, SC.

This exhibition contained works by and about Robert Burns, and showed selected highlights from the G. Ross Roy Collection of Burns, Burnsiana and Scottish Poetry. The collection, acquired from USC Professor Roy in 1989, is widely recognized as among the best Burns collections anywhere in North America. The items chosen for the University's Robert Burns bicentenary exhibit have been selected from over 4,000 items in the Roy Collection on Burns alone. In making the selection, the aim was not only to display some of the outstanding high points and the rarest items, but also to represent some of the different …

This catalog accompanied the 1996 University Libraries’ exhibition of material related to Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century British Women Writers. The exhibition covers a full chronological spectrum, and many of the "collector’s high points" of literature by women are displayed, including first editions of Wollstonecraft’s Vindication, Shelley’s Frankenstein, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, and Rossetti’s Goblin Market, as well as first editions by Austen, Charlotte and Anne Bronte, George Eliot and other well-known names.
