Topic: How to find physical books in the GVSU libraries

Objectives: Students will feel comfortable and will be successful searching for books on the library website. Students will successfully navigate call numbers, the stacks, check out, and holds.

Suitable Audience: Any classes which make significant use of/requires physical sources. This lesson has been used with Art History classes but could be adapted for others.

The Inclusive Leadership Subcommittee has drafted the following Inclusive Library Leadership Definition:

Inclusive library leaders are individuals who are aware of their own biases, actively seek out and consider different perspectives to inform their decision-making, collaborate more effectively with others through cultural competency, and center empathy and compassion in their approach to leadership. ~Inspired by the CCL definition of Inclusive Leadership In doing its research and in support of knowledge sharing, the Subcommittee created an annotated bibliography on inclusive leadership. Appraisal strategies can be leveraged to inform decision-making around digital preservation planning, lending curatorial oversight to an area that is often perceived as highly technical. A prioritization matrix is a project management tool to help you narrow down multiple project or task options, and identify the highest-priority areas. They facilitate decision making, are customizable, and easy to read. This poster presentation explores the prioritization matrix methodology used by GVSU Special Collections & University Archives in digital preservation planning.

Presented at the 2023 Archival Kismet Conference "Thinking About Stuff," this presentation explores historical documents found in the Robert H. Merrill papers in the Grand Valley State University Special Collections and University Archives.

In 1920, Robert Hall Merrill, a young civil engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, traveled to China to serve as Assistant Principle Engineer on a reconstruction project of a portion of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal is the longest and oldest canal system in the world. Merrill's work produced a comprehensive survey report of the Grand Canal construction area near the Yellow River. This presentation will explore perspectives on hiring practices from both sides of the table. The library's first residency search and subsequent faculty searches integrated leading recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. The residency search committee chair, one of the successful residency candidates, and a tenure-track faculty hired using the new approach team up to dissect the hiring process from their perspectives. They will discuss the work behind critically examining the existing hiring process, designing a recruitment plan, and implementing a new structure in order to ensure empathy to applicants going through the process.
