The proliferation of digital media has created a need for college instructors to cultivate in students the skills required to navigate and participate effectively within an information- and communication-rich environment. In addition, digital technologies open up new opportunities for integrating research-intensive instruction specifically designed to incorporate information literacy into the core curriculum. This panel will discuss a pedagogical experiment in which we created an “eXtensible” classroom that integrated a number of institutional resources. There have been many approaches to information literacy education at academic institutions, and many positive outcomes from these efforts. Still, there is need for more research, exploration, and professional communication among librarians to identify information literacy teaching methods that have a consistent and long-lasting impact. The business sector has traditionally evaluated their training and instruction programs on a model that considers 4 levels of success (Kirkpatrick). These levels can be described as success based on 1) appeal, 2) learning outcomes 3) integration of learning into daily work routines, or 4) overall impact on / improvement of the organization. This panel, consisting of instructors of the Introduction to Women’s Studies course, is concerned with including information literacy and skills training concepts into curriculum in a way that supplements our subject matter. In an introductory level course there is usually a broad range of experience in information literacy. As may be expected, upper class students have a better understanding of the research process than first year students and general education students have less interest in subject-specific research than majors or minors. Dr. Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process theory (ISP) asserts that there are six stages within the quest for information: initiation, selection, exploration, formulation and collection. A successful search for information will entail each of these stages. In each of these stages, a person experiences thoughts, feelings and actions unique to the stage. Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory asserts that those with different predominant learning styles will experience thoughts, feelings and perceptions differently. Primary source research requires students to acquire specialized research skills. This paper presents results from a user study testing the effectiveness of a Web guide designed to convey the concepts behind “primary source literacy”. Students are introduced to various databases that provide access to alternative perspectives and to an advanced organizer designed to foster critical evaluation of sources.

In a Valuing Cultural Diversity course, required for all undergraduate education majors, students are asked to write a "Why" paper to investigate and understand alternative perspectives, looking particularly at the perspectives of a cultural group different from their own.

Concept maps allow students to visually work through an idea for potentially useful search terms.

A common roadblock students experience in the research process is identifying central concepts in their research questions and devising useful ways to reframe search terms. Concept mapping is one instructional strategy that can be used to help students better identify the central concepts in their research questions and expand on other ways these concepts are articulated in the literature.
