Servant And Steward: The Steward Leader Model For Unleashing Human Potential, Martha M. Geaney Jan 2007

Servant And Steward: The Steward Leader Model For Unleashing Human Potential, Martha M. Geaney

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Executive Summary The mandate for business leaders to consistently predict and achieve economic success reverberates throughout American society. Many leaders who wish to practice transformational leadership are faced with the dilemma of implementing command and control, productivity driven leadership techniques to achieve bottom-line results. These management practices were developed during a time when the workplace was perceived as a place of cause and effect, action and reaction. The ideal employee was one whose actions matched the consistency and reliability of a machine. This focus on Frederick Taylor's management techniques, in the workplace and in many MBA programs, may in fact …

Who’S Writing About Servant-Leadership: Or The Art Of Bibliography, Betsy Hine Jan 2007

Who’S Writing About Servant-Leadership: Or The Art Of Bibliography, Betsy Hine

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

At the heart of research is knowing about what has been written or said about a given topic. This essay tells of a journey that culminates in putting together a body of such information. It also demonstrates a partnership between researchers who gather knowledge and librarians who organize that knowledge so that others might have access to it. Several years ago a group of faculty, administrators and others at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana began a reading group around servant-leadership. It started out as a small and very informal group of people who gathered about once a month …

Servant-Leadership In Corporate Strategy, Mohan Nair Jan 2007

Servant-Leadership In Corporate Strategy, Mohan Nair

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Where do servant-leadership and corporate strategy meet? What does servant-leadership look like in corporations when it manifests in strategy rather than through personal leadership? How do we know when all or many of the elements within the philosophy of servant-leadership express themselves in and through an institution? Corporations tend to categorize servant-leadership embodied as a way to lead rather than a corporate strategy to exist and grow with customers. For us to move beyond the accepted territories of leadership style to the way a corporation wins markets and develops customer relationships, we must consider the ways in which servant-leadership serves …

Film Review: Akeelah And The Bee, Mark A. Beattie, Frank A. Beattie Jan 2007

Film Review: Akeelah And The Bee, Mark A. Beattie, Frank A. Beattie

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Dear Father, We dream While we may   Who are we to need? We need While we wait - Neil Diamond From the soundtrack of Jonathan Livingston Seagull In searching for a film to review that expressed the nature and notion of servant-leadership, we viewed several films with threads of promise. However, few really encapsulated what we felt Robert Greenleaf or even Hermann Hesse would look for in a movie. Frustration was beginning to set in, when close relatives received a movie trailer in the mail from Starbucks, where they both are employed. The trailer held promise of a film that …

Wherry Revisited: An Empirical Examination Of The Nonperformance Factors That Influence Variation In A Performance Rating, Raymond B. Roll Edd Jan 2007

Wherry Revisited: An Empirical Examination Of The Nonperformance Factors That Influence Variation In A Performance Rating, Raymond B. Roll Edd

Dissertations

In a perfect performance rating system, both the recall and rating of an individual's behavior would precisely mirror the performance of that ratee. However, the reality of performance rating systems is that often times the rater's recall and subsequent rating fails to reflect the true performance of the individual. The difference between actual and perceived performance has been attributed in the literature to conscious or unconscious rater bias. In 1952, Wherry developed a rating theory based on a series of mathematical equations that precisely defined the relationship between the performance of the ratee and the recall of that observation. Key …

The Effects Of Stereotype Activation On Women's Reactions To Leadership Situations, Or, How Reading Cosmo Might Prevent You From Becoming Ceo, Stefanie L. Simon Jan 2007

The Effects Of Stereotype Activation On Women's Reactions To Leadership Situations, Or, How Reading Cosmo Might Prevent You From Becoming Ceo, Stefanie L. Simon

Honors Theses

The present experimental study investigated the effect of stereotype activation on women's responses to a leadership situation. Participants were exposed to either gender-stereotypic or gender-counterstereotypic magazine advertisements picturing women and then performed a leadership task involving two confederate s. Results supported the prediction that participants exposed to stereotypic advertisements would exhibit more negative reactions to the leadership situation than those exposed to counterstereotypic advertisements such that they reported lower perceived performance, self-esteem, and well-being. Sex-role orientation moderated this effect such that' advertisements had a stronger effect on feminine-oriented participants' domain identification, intent to lead in the future, and experienced cognitive …

Politics And The Glass Ceiling In American Law Enforcement: Why Not More Women Chiefs Of Police?, Madeline G. Meistrich Edd Jan 2007

Politics And The Glass Ceiling In American Law Enforcement: Why Not More Women Chiefs Of Police?, Madeline G. Meistrich Edd

Dissertations

Law enforcement is one of the last male-dominated occupations. Out of 18,000 police departments in the United States, only 200 to 250 have women chiefs. Such under-representation reflects the "glass ceiling" effect of a gender-based metaphorical barrier that prevents women from rising to the top of an organization, regardless of qualifications. The research examined three questions: what are the issues and problems articulated by women officers attempting to move upwards; what strategies were employed as they attempted to advance; and what strategies could help other women reach the top? Nine female primary participants in law enforcement leadership were interviewed, as …

Pedagogy In Online Graduate Business Learning Environments, Alicia Maria Gallegos Butters Edd Jan 2007

Pedagogy In Online Graduate Business Learning Environments, Alicia Maria Gallegos Butters Edd

Dissertations

Many higher education institutions have decided to offer graduate business online courses and full degree online programs. Offering a quality education for graduate business students online is of concern to business school professors, administrators, and students. Instructors are concerned with the content, delivery method, and level of student achievement. Instructional design support for the online instructors is often lacking in the online curriculum and pedagogy, leaving the faculty with a great deal of freedom to create their own course content, structure, and delivery without any formal distance education training. For this reason, it is imperative for universities to establish online …

[Introduction To] The Values Of Presidential Leadership, Terry L. Price, J. Thomas Wren Jan 2007

[Introduction To] The Values Of Presidential Leadership, Terry L. Price, J. Thomas Wren

Bookshelf

In this volume, presidential scholars from communication, history, law, philosophy, political science, and psychology explore the broader phenomenon of leadership. Like leadership more generally, presidential leadership is a value-laden activity, an exercise in communication, and a collective enterprise. It is also subject to psychological and historical barriers to interpretation. Finally, presidential leadership is instrumental: presidents must achieve their valued ends. Contributors address each of these aspects of leadership in essays on how presidential values are determined or constructed, how they are condoned and criticized, how they are packaged and conveyed, and how they are interpreted and acted upon.

[Introduction To] Inventing Leadership: The Challenge Of Democracy, J. Thomas Wren

The tension between ruler and ruled in democratic societies has never been satisfactorily resolved, and the competing interpretations of this relationship lie at the bottom of much modern political discourse. In this fascinating book, Thomas Wren clarifies and elevates the debates over leadership by identifying the fundamental premises and assumptions that underlie past and present understandings.

The War On Inequality : Subtleties In The Perceptions Of Women Leaders, Adrienne Supino Jan 2007

The War On Inequality : Subtleties In The Perceptions Of Women Leaders, Adrienne Supino

Honors Theses

We studied whether the incongruity between the female gender role and stereotypically masculine leadership roles can lead people, particularly men and sex-typed individuals, to negatively perceive women in this type of leadership role. A study was designed to investigate whether the gender of a potential appointee to the historically masculine leadership role of Secretary of Defense, in either a time of peace or terror, affected people's perceptions of this person. Fifty-three participants read one of four articles containing biographical information about either a male or female candidate for the post, in either a peace context or a terror context. We …

Deficit Reduction In The U.S. Senate : The Search For Moral Leadership In The Budget Process, David Kendall Roberts Jan 2007

Deficit Reduction In The U.S. Senate : The Search For Moral Leadership In The Budget Process, David Kendall Roberts

Honors Theses

Contemporary deficit reduction and fiscal responsibility are central to the economic wellbeing of future generations as well as their ability to freely decide their own policy priorities. Many scholarly publications and popular commentary on budget policy describe the obstacles to deficit reduction and political leaders' unwillingness to address the nation's long-term fiscal problems. However, current discussions of budget deficits and the national debt have not been informed by a comprehensive empirical analysis of attempts to reduce the deficit. This thesis examines all deficit-affecting floor amendments to budget legislation from 1975 to 2005 in order to assess whether the bleak account …

The Rise And Fall Of America's Education President : George W. Bush's Political Leadership And The Passage Of The No Child Left Behind Act, Ethan L. Mcwilliams Jan 2007

The Rise And Fall Of America's Education President : George W. Bush's Political Leadership And The Passage Of The No Child Left Behind Act, Ethan L. Mcwilliams

Honors Theses

On January 8, 2002, President George W. Bush proudly signed the "No Child Left Behind Act," thus ensuring that H.R. 1 became Public Law 107-110. During the signing ceremony, the President triumphantly proclaimed that, "as of this hour, America's schools will be on a new path of reform, and a new path of results."1 The legislation, which totaled more than six hundred pages, was intended to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and expand its aim according to four central principles: accountability for results; state and local flexibility; focusing resources on successful methods; and expanding choice? Although substantively notable …

Can Organizations Meet Thetest Of Transforming Leadership?, Gill Robinson Hickman Jan 2007

Can Organizations Meet Thetest Of Transforming Leadership?, Gill Robinson Hickman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

My subsequent writing in this area takes his definition of transforming leadership from the political context and applies it to formal organizations. Transforming organizational leaders shape collective purpose and developmental processes within the organization that adapt to some social changes and promote others. Though leadership scholars have previously adapted Burns's concept and incorporated it in leader-follower relationships (Bass 1985; Bennis and Nanus 1985; Tichy and Devanna 1986; Bass, Avolio, and Goodheim 1987; Bass, Waldman, Avolio, and Bebb 1987), my work attempts to infuse organizations with Burns's imperative to link leadership with "collective purpose and social change (Burns 1978:3).

Leadership And The Vox Populi, J. Thomas Wren Jan 2007

Leadership And The Vox Populi, J. Thomas Wren

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

James MacGregor Burns’s Leadership is one of those marvelous books with the power to comfort and afflict simultaneously. It has had precisely that impact upon me as I have labored in the vineyards of the study of leadership: comforting me with its substance, analytical power, and moral compass; afflicting me with the central leadership issues it poses so well, yet leaves others tantalizingly unresolved. Much of my research in the field of leadership seeks to pursue the implications of these core issues: the role of values in leadership; the elusive concept and function of the common good; and, perhaps most …

Dissertations

Program. This study investigated the relationships between Reservist leaders' attitudes and Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Theory (SLT), and Thomas's Integrative Model of Intrinsic Motivation during a 2004 Sinai, Egypt, peacekeeping mission.

Methodology. This descriptive study provided quantitative and qualitative results. Three instruments were used with a convenience sample of leaders within one forward-deployed National Guard infantry battalion. The LEADSelf instrument determined the SLT style of unit officers and non-commissioned officers. The Thomas Empowerment Survey profiled participants' intrinsic motivation. A researcher-developed survey determined preferences for intrinsic versus extrinsic motivator factors.

The study centered on the following issues: (1) Are the …

Relationship Among Supervisors' Transformational And Transactional Leadership Styles, And Teachers' Job Satisfaction In Taiwan Higher Education, Chi-Ling Sung

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This study examined the influence of supervisors' transformational and transactional leadership styles on job satisfaction of college and university in Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between supervisors' transformational and transactional leadership styles, and the satisfaction of Taiwan's higher education instructors. The number of teachers at the university level in Taiwan rose 36.8% from 1951 to 2004; therefore faculty job satisfaction is an important issue. Schools want to keep their faculty and reputation to maintain a competitive edge. This non-experimental, quantitative, explanatory correlation and explanatory comparative survey research explores the relationship between supervisors' transformational and …

The Road Less Traveled, Larry Spears Jan 2007

The Road Less Traveled, Larry Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

WHAT HAPPENS TO SERVANT-LEADERS WHEN THEY GET TIRED? Not long ago I was reminded of a quote-two quotes actually-which the noted author M. Scott Peck had shared with us as part of his 1993 Greenleaf conference keynote address. Peck, who passed away in 2005, and who is best known as the author of The Road Less Traveled, had admitted at the time that he was feeling tired, and he quoted T. S. Elliot, who had written: "Middle age is when they keep asking you to do more and more, and you're not yet decrepit enough to turn them down."

Vision And Poetry, Nadine Chapman Jan 2007

Vision And Poetry, Nadine Chapman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The poet uses imagery arising from the concrete, from observation, and from responses to specific people. Through the power of metaphor and symbol, poetry can capture the unique ethical relationship between human beings and their relationship with the physical world. The face of a stranger, a dream, or a dirt road may gain unforeseen depth. Robert Frost's poetry affected Greenleaf's understanding of journey. Other poets, such as Yeats, T. S. Eliot, and Whitman, inspired him. He freely acknowledged his debt to these writers for their creative language and vision.

This talk was delivered by Myrlie Evers-Williams as a Keynote at the 2006 International Conference of the Robert K Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership in Indianapolis, Indiana. Good morning. Good morning to each and every one of you. I am delighted to have been invited to share this morning with you. A few months ago, as a matter of fact, I was in Chicago and had a chance to meet with Jeff Miller and others from the Greenleaf Center. We had an absolutely marvelous discussion and in a moment of weakness, when I was asked if I would speak, I said, …

Modesty In Leadership: A Study Of The Level Five Leader, Lucia M. Hamilton, Charlotte M. Knoche Jan 2007

Modesty In Leadership: A Study Of The Level Five Leader, Lucia M. Hamilton, Charlotte M. Knoche

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Human resource metrics and in particular, the management practices that impact bottom-line performance, have received increasing interest in recent years in the business community, as companies look to human capital rather than industrial capital to achieve success. A study that has garnered a great deal of attention in this area is the subject of Jim Collins' best-selling book Good to Great (2001). In it, Collins reports on the findings of his research team in their analysis of companies who significantly out-performed their competitors over an extended period of time. The research team examined companies who had a 15-year cumulative stock …

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Beginning, Paul M. Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The following essay is the first in a two part series by Paul Nakai. Look for the second installment, entitled The Journey of Leadership Development from the Inside Out: Going Forward in the 2008 International Journal of Servant-Leadership. A few years ago, a young boy climbed over a protective fence surrounding a high voltage transformer box. Unfortunately, the box's locking mechanism was faulty and the child managed to get into the transformer and was severely burned. As you would imagine, the various parties started to litigiously position themselves to insure a "fair" settlement. A flurry of emotions, accusations, defenses and …

[Florence Li] exercised her priesthood with such faithfulness and quiet dignity that she won tremendous respect for herself and increasing support for other women seeking ordination . .. The very quality of Ms. Li's ministry in China and in Canada and the grace with which she exercised her priesthood helped convince many people through the communion and beyond that the Holy Spirit was certainly working in and through women priests. -General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, 2004 Resolution Apart from sectarian movements, the institutionalized protestant churches by and large did not provide women with opportunities for ministry in …

Organizational Trauma: A Phenomenological Study Of Leaders In Traumatized Organizations, Shana D. Lynn Hormann Jan 2007

Organizational Trauma: A Phenomenological Study Of Leaders In Traumatized Organizations, Shana D. Lynn Hormann

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

While some organizations die when trauma erupts, others do not succumb. They live and even thrive. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1. To learn from leaders their perspectives about key conditions that allow organizations to withstand and heal from organizational trauma; and, 2. To inform practice about building and strengthening these conditions in organizations. Participants were leaders who led their organizations during an organizational trauma or who came into programs after the trauma occurred to facilitate recovery. Nine executive directors for sexual assault programs participated in this hermeneutic phenomenological study, sharing their experiences and reflections. Two composite depictions …

A Communicative Theory Of Leadership Practice, Kathryn Ann Gaines Jan 2007

A Communicative Theory Of Leadership Practice, Kathryn Ann Gaines

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Addressing three problems in the field of leadership studies - fragmentation across disciplines; emphasis on individual leaders in titled positions; failure to identify a coherent set of actions for performing leadership - this study develops a framework of core communicative leadership practices. It is premised on a philosophical analysis of leadership as a social strategy for securing action in service of interests claimed by or for a community - an action performed intentionally via symbolic behavior accessible to any and all members of a community. This definition serves as a heuristic for the development of a systematic theory of leadership …

A Theory Of Curriculum Development In The Professions: An Integration Of Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory With Schwab's Deliberative Curriculum Theory, Shelley Ann Chapman Jan 2007

A Theory Of Curriculum Development In The Professions: An Integration Of Mezirow's Transformative Learning Theory With Schwab's Deliberative Curriculum Theory, Shelley Ann Chapman

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

A hundred years ago, the problem with professional education was that it lacked a sound scientific foundation and opportunities for clinical practice. Throughout the past three decades, discussions on graduate professional education have focused on how to improve the theory/practice continuum, either through new formats or strategies, or by emphasizing one over the other. However, with the new century, new problems have emerged within the professional education arena. This dissertation has focused on two main problems in graduate professional education in the early 21st century: students are focusing too much on technical expertise and not enough on becoming transformed into …
