The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program has established a new support base to education for youth service organization careers. Commitment to the challenges and opportunities of the program is extremely high throughout the University among students, faculty, and administration One of the key challenges to the program is to conduct an annual national symposium on important issues to the profession. The topic of my talk this evening is "Challenges to the Profession." We heard this afternoon about the challenge., presented by both the changing demographics and the changing realities of adolescence in this country. We will hear, over the course of the symposium, about the challenge., involved in designing and running more effective programs, recruiting, training and retaining volunteers, raising funds. Tonight, I would like to talk about a larger challenge, a challenge that will lead us to think about a word used earlier -- mission.
