The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program inaugurated a creative research and communications system for professionals in youth serving organizations with the 1990 National Youth Leadership Symposium. The Symposium is an annual working conference that focuses on solving practical problems for the emerging profession. The purpose of the Symposium is to serve as an agency of change by raising questions, examining circumstances, making decisions and taking actions that realize the common ground and agreement needed to contribute to the profession. It builds on the unique traditions, missions, and services of each youth organization, while cutting across the boundaries …

"What are the major problems facing youth and what can be done to better prepare youth organizations to address these challenges?" are the topics of a discussion roundtable of a diverse group of community leaders. The 1990 National Youth Leadership Symposium was a strong first step for the University of Northern Iowa's program to lead the examination of important content issues for youth serving organizations. The inaugural symposium has set traditions for an annual event while initiating a research and reporting sequence in support of the youth leadership profession. These are exciting new activities to enhance an often overlooked but important field of endeavor. One of the key challenges and targeted purposes of the annual Symposium is to foster awareness, responsiveness, and advocacy to the youth leadership profession.

The shut down of federal programs in early October because of the inability of Congress, and the President to establish spending priorities was just another reminder that the financing of society's needs now and in the future is going to take planning and collaboration. To take a narrow "just me" approach will mean a "shut down" of programs for all. Youth development programs are no different. Limited resources and difficult issues are forcing agencies to move from an "isolationist" point of view to increasing cooperative efforts.
