Using the case of the Darfur conflict (2001-) and the Chad-Sudan proxy war (2005-2010), this study will demonstrate that conflict in Chad and Sudan cannot be fully understood without taking into account how heads of state and rebel leaders in both countries manipulated tribal identities to retain and enhance power. Memorialisation can hide the “true past.” Most of the past that is memorialised has political and sentimental significance. This paper attempts to reconstruct Kenneth Kaunda’s historical significance from remembrances about KK. We conceptualise the memorialisation and commemoration of KK using a Zambian mourning process and highlight how remembrances about KK produce a hagiographic narrative. The paper demonstrates that KK’s role in creating a Zambian collective memory based on his Humanism created a knowledge vacuum in Zambian historical memory. Furthermore, the monumentalising of KK seems to encourage forgetfulness but mausoleums also serve a mnemonic function to Zambian collective memory and history. …

In this dissertation, I examine culture and communication in transnational Nigeria, focusing on Nollywood and its industrial politics. Migration is a prevalent social concern in the Middle East/North Africa. In addition to emigration, the countries struggle to incorporate immigrant and transiting populations. This article examines the influence of ethnodoxy—the linking of Arab and Muslim identity—on public opinion on immigrants and migration in the MENA region. Using original surveys of Egyptian and Moroccan Muslims from February and May–June 2023, it shows the more ethnodoxic respondents are, the more likely they are to hold anti-immigrant views. Sustainable irrigation methods maximize agricultural productivity in Northern African countries like Sudan. This project evaluates soil properties to develop optimized irrigation strategies for Sudan's arid and semi-arid climate. Assessing soil characteristics such as texture, infiltration rates, and nutrient content informs the selection of modern irrigation systems. Data from 3,192 locations, collected using GPS and ring infiltrometers for infiltration rates, alongside laboratory analyses for soil properties, were employed. A ranking system determined suitable irrigation systems for specific soil classes, considering factors like slope, wind, crop tolerance, available water capacity (AWC), drainage, germination, capital cost, labor cost, maintenance, and evapotranspiration (ET).
