The construction of a series of public skateboarding parks (skateparks) in rural areas in northeast Alabama came about between 2005 and 2007. Skateparks are expensive projects for rural Alabama city governments to undergo; yet, numerous parks have been built within the last decade. Our research explores why these parks were built, where space was allocated for the park, who funded them, and how the space is regulated. The majority of our data come from interviewing city authorities or parties that had a role in funding or campaigning for a skatepark. We have found the establishment of these parks had mix …

It is well attested that wherever people gather, acrobats, poets, musicians, dancers, and tricksters also appear and perform. Although street performers can be found throughout the entire world, they are curiously shunned in New York City, while Plovidiv, Bulgaria in March 2015 decided to follow other European cities in having auditions or qualifiers for performers in public places. This research adds to scholarship on performance art as a beneficial element in developing a sense of place in urban environments, particularly pedestrian malls. Traditional political polling methods have become less reliable as society adopts more smartphone technology. Internet and social media use have also risen due to increased smartphone use, which have given a digital voice to political views. This study assessed one social media platform, Twitter, as a means for predicting election outcomes more accurately than traditional methods. Michigan and Wisconsin’s ‘tweets’ related to the 2016 presidential election campaign slogans of candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were compiled and a numerical comparison was performed. Federal climate policy in the United States is still in its infancy and is in large part characterized by efforts to reach a consensus on the very existence and causality of climate change. This has stemmed from a sociopolitical rift within the country, with the objectivity and usefulness of science attacked by detractors. Scientists who are most qualified to defend their methods and provide information to policymakers rarely have an institutional incentive to share this knowledge, but should be encouraged to communicate their findings to the public, especially those who receive public funding. The plotlines of many science fiction television programs and films establish the identities of the protagonists and antagonists at an early stage of the viewing experience . T hese boundaries serve to position the viewer on a particular side of the story, rendering it difficult to fully consider the Other’s actions and motivations . This article considers the work of Giorgio Agamben’s ‘Anthropological Machine’ (2004) in the depiction of human-nonhuman interactions in Star Trek . While Star Trek aims to present a utopian vision of the future, a contradictory reading is equally plausible . Instead of embracing novel encounters with nonhuman life and technology, Star Trek retreats into an idealized vision of the human . Encounters with the nonhuman become vehicles through which to reinforce this vision of a bounded and pure human subject . This paper argues that the proliferation of geographical inquiry into popular culture as a prism for understanding geopolitical processes can benefit from more sustained engagement with psychoanalytic theory, particularly the work of Melanie Klein . Klein’s account of guilt and the urge to make reparation as both central to the development of conscience and profoundly unevenly distributed contributes to a critique of dominant, uneven geographies of guilt and encourages a nuanced approach to guilt’s potential ethical implications . There are relatively few media products that can compete with Star Trek in terms of longevity and cultural saturation . First introduced to audiences in 1966, the franchise now encompasses more than fifty years, six television series, thirteen films, countless spin-off novels and ancillary books, multiple annual international fan conventions and an enduring place in the popular culture lexicon of the English language—a remarkable feat for a television show that almost never made it to the screen and, even when it did, was canceled for poor ratings after just three seasons . As one of the most enduring television franchises of the late 20th century, Star Trek has had an unparalleled influence on the popular culture representation of humanity’s future as ultimately utopian . In this paper, however, I argue that even as the on-screen text of Star Trek was condemning the narrow parochial interests of nationalism, greed, xenophobia and fear, the narrative subtext throughout the fifty years of the franchise supported the idea of the expansion of western hegemonic power . NCAA Division I athletic conferences have recently undergone conference realignments . The expanding geographic footprint of these conferences has led to teams having an increased travel distances for all sports . T his research investigates the environmental impact that conference realignment has had in the “Power 5” conferences in NCAA Division I football . Based on travel distances, has the carbon footprint of the conferences changed dramatically from pre-realignment to post-realignment? Geographic education is crucial for preparing students to navigate the places and spaces they inhabit, and National Geographic’s Giant Traveling Map program seeks to address this need by providing an immersive and kinesthetic learning experience with the use of a gym-sized floor map . In this study, a Giant Traveling Map was tested with sixth grade students to determine the effect of engaging with the map on improving spatial thinking skills . Lichenometry can be a useful tool to date past events when surface ages are unknown . As a method, lichenometry needs to overcome uncertainties in the understanding of lichen biology . Being fairly ubiquitous, Rhizocarpon geographicum is generally used for dating purposes . Other lichens can and have been used for studies, but are often used in conjunction with R . geographicum . This case study suggests that for areas lacking R . geographicum, Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca may be used as an alternate species if the substrate in question does not have substantial R . geographicum growth . Scholars from a variety of disciplines have analyzed voter participation, with most studies focusing on socio-demographic issues to explain turnout . Often overlooked, however, is the geography of voter participation . Omaha, Nebraska presents an economically and ethnically diverse study area to examine geographic factors related to turnout . Over 51 percent of the state’s registered voters live in three counties—Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster—which contain the Omaha and Lincoln metropolitan areas . Legitimacy in natural resource management refers to the degree to which citizens accept and comply with stated plans and policies . Lack of legitimacy can threaten collaboration-based watershed groups that rely on voluntary compliance of major stakeholders to achieve their water quality goals . The Delmarva Peninsula is a unique region with regards to the importance of fog . This study examines the spatial and temporal variability of fog characteristics across the Peninsula . In this paper, we use five stations with reliable records to create a regional fog climatology . Results indicate there is a high degree of temporal variability over relatively short distances, especially when comparing coastal to inland locations . The most inland location, Salisbury, receives by far the greatest annual frequency of fog . The seasonal distribution of fog events for the inland and coastal locations differ greatly, with Salisbury …

Summit County, Colorado, is experiencing a housing crisis influenced by the rise of short-term rentals (STRs). This project investigates how STRs spatially and economically impact the county. STRs are regarded as a reason for the housing crisis as they take away long-term housing from locals and increase housing market prices. Locals are forced to look for housing in neighboring counties such as Clear Creek, Eagle, Grand, Lake, and Park. This GIS project explores the relationship between airline route networks and flight delays for two U.S. Airlines. Using data obtained from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), route networks were created for United and Southwest Airlines showing all flights that each carrier reported in 2023. The airlines of interest were selected due to their opposing route network types; commonly referred to as a hub-and-spoke (HS) and a point-to-point (PTP) route network, respectively. This project explores the reintroduction of the wolverine (Gulo gulo luscus) to Colorado’s mountainous regions, where the species has been extirpated due to habitat destruction and human activities. The study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify optimal habitats for wolverine reintroduction, considering factors like snowpack duration, prey availability, and human disturbance. By creating a GIS-based habitat suitability model, this research will guide conservationists in selecting reintroduction sites. Mangrove forests are some of the world's most bio-diverse habitats, providing essential services to the surrounding coasts. Removal of these habitats has a devastating impact on the ecosystems within them. The Florida Keys are some of the last areas in the United States with extensive mangrove populations. One specific area, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, has been under state protection since 1959. For that reason, mangrove forest habitats there are less fragmented. This study uses remotely sensed imagery to quantify and analyze mangrove populations in this area using two methods: sub-pixel analysis and supervised classification. The …
