Using census and economic data, geographic survey information, and oral histories and interviews, the author details the evolution, morphology and cultural characteristics of the Hispano Homeland from aerial growth to relative decline during the years of 1680 to 1980.

This study examines the temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital. The city has experienced significant urbanization in the past two decades. Therefore, the impervious surfaces and the restriction of original surface flow routes increase runoff in Riyadh city. Thus, stormwater frequently accumulates in streets because it exceeds the storm sewer capacity, storm sewers are blocked or partially blocked by sediment, or due to the lack of storm sewers. Data from three climatic stations in Riyadh and north of the city are used to characterize the temporal and spatial variations of rainfall amounts …

The purpose of this study was to determine the frost protection value of covering your plants in spring with polyethylene terephthalate (plastic) milk jugs or polyurethane rose cones. These coverings were placed in a field southeast of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Nocturnal temperatures were measured from May 7- 24, 1995 on clear and cloudy nights. Spring nocturnal temperatures inside one U.S. gallon milk jugs were slightly lower and those inside rose cones slightly higher than ambient air temperatures. Placing holes near the bases of these covers to provide additional circulation resulted in slightly lower nocturnal temperatures under the rose cones but no …

The Appalachian region has been a core of poverty for many decades. In this research, some changes in the extent and nature Qf poverty in the region are presented that suggest despite extensive programs designed to combat poverty, a core of intense poverty still persists. While significant improvements have been made in such areas as transportation, it seems clear that some roots of poverty in the region have not been addressed. It is argued that one neglected area involves the banking network in eastern Kentucky. This contention is supported by analyzing banking data concerning the internal banking network within the …

This research explores the impact of regionalism in Canada on the program design ofthe Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) Prime Time News. An analysis was performed on the content of this program to determine whether or not such regional considerations exist. The content analysis extracted two key variables, Total Segments and Segment Length, to determine if the CBC employed a decision making process imilar to the federal government's de jure and de facto regional allocation process for governmental appointments. Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international geography honor society, has just awarded five scholarships for 1996, each worth $500. Four of the scholarships are for undergraduate geography majors and one is for a graduate student in geography. The winners were as follows: Christopher Bertram, who was awarded the O. Orland Maxfield Scholarship. Christopher is a geography major at South Dakota State University, where he is President of the Delta Zeta Chapter. Most of us have heard, and maybe even used, the statement " 90°F. temperature and 90% relative humidity." This exceptional weather condition, based on popular confusion of the temperature/relative humidity concept, generally seems to be perceived as possible by most people. In this research, a 30- year archive approaching one million data sets for seven New England cities was examined to determine the validity of such an expression. This paper examines the growth, nature, and character of three informal settlement complexes in the Durban Functional Region (DFR) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Informal settlements or jondolas have become a permanent feature of the South African landscape since democracy. During the apartheid era (1948 to 1994) these structures were temporary, existed in the shadow of metropolitan areas, and faced removal. The post-apartheid period has been characterized by an upsurge in the development of informal settlements especially around metropolitan areas. Delta Zeta Chapter at South Dakota State University in a direct sense grew out of the Alpha Rho Chapter at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. There, Edward P. Hogan, who was a student at the time, had been active in the Chapter as its president. His wife, Joan M. Hogan, was also a member in the 1960s. Thethird person who would ultimately playa role in the formation of Delta Zeta was Lee A. Opheim, an instructor at Saint Louis University, who had joined the Mu Chapter at the University of Minnesota, Duluth in the 1950s.

Young people today often hear their eIders talk about the severe winters oftheir youth, noting colder, snowier times in the past. A survey of elderly residents of NW Wisconsin documents their perceptions of past winters. The results of this survey were then related to an nual and decade mean winter temperature and snowfal l data from the same region for the period, 1920 to 1996. It appears that memories of the most severe winter weather are connected with childhood. A majority of respondents chose the 1930s as being the coldest decade in memory. In reality, it was not.
