An Inventory Of Private Well Programs Across The United States, Bethany G. Foust, Ann S. Ojeda, Jessica Curl, Eve Brantley, Stephanie R. Rogers

Private well owners comprise approximately 15% of the United States (US) population and are responsible for managing their well water. Management of domestic wells can be burdensome, requires knowledge, and is critical for maintaining clean drinking water. Management resources vary by state and the resource landscape across the US is unclear. Thus, our objective was to inventory where resources exist, while also highlighting geographic areas that may need improved resources to ensure that people have the ability to safely manage their drinking water. Results of this inventory showed that 64% of states have programs; 72% of which were Cooperative Extension.

Promoting Equity: Embracing Food Justice In The Transformation Of The Food Systems For Bipoc Communities, Frank Yeboah Adusei
Journal of Extension
The food justice movement addresses systemic food inequities impacting BIPOC communities, rooted in civil rights and environmental justice movements. It advocates for fair access to culturally relevant food, combating food deserts, and promoting food sovereignty. Recognizing intersectionality, it emphasizes collaboration to dismantle systemic barriers. This study aims to understand BIPOC communities' challenges and effective strategies, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts for lasting systemic change. Extension professionals face challenges but can contribute through equity-focused strategies, community engagement, and partnerships, advancing food justice and fostering inclusive food systems.

This year was another exciting one for the Alpha Chapter. Duri ng National Geography Awareness Week we sold Tshirts and went on a wild weekend canoe and camping trip to Turkey Run in Indiana. The weather and fall colors were beautiful, hiking was fun, and the river was low, making a wet run for 5 out of 6 canoes. In November, the members took an Indianapolis trip to see an ice hockey game and to sightsee.

Certain mid-latitude coastal areas are zones of extreme baroclinicity during the coldest months of the year. Because midlatitude cyclones often tend to travel along these zones of coastal baroclinicity, the exact timing of the variations in the degree of baroclinicity along these coasts is important with regard to the forecasting of cyclonic storm tracks and their associated weather. This study examines the variations in the timing and magnitude of the baroclinicity along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico of the United States. Duathlon performance in male "middle-of-the-pack" (MMP) athletes was examined for 13 races held in Oregon and British Columbia during 1990. The primary objectives was to investigate the relationship between topographic and race-day weather variability on MMP duathlon performance. Regression models were created to help explain MMP performance for each duathlon segment (first 5 km run, 30 km bicycle, second 5 km run), overall, and 5 km run disparity. A suite of topographic and raceday weather variables were considered as possible explanatory variables. First 5 km ~un performance is primarily a function of the topographic difficulty of the course. Native mountain goats must cross U.S. Highway 2 in order to gain access to a natural salt lick along the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, Montana. Prior to 1981, goats approached through forest cover and then crossed over the highway. Reconstruction of the highway incorporated two goat underpasses which substantially altered the migration pattern. Large numbers of goats now utilize an open, south-facing slope, and cause extensive erosion. Repeat photography illustrates the extent of erosion over the period since 1981 , and provides estimates of the amount of sediment removed. Erosion rates are startlingly high, and are a direct …

Glacial landforms in the valleys of the Shenchenbao Glacier and the Lailogoru Glacier located on the eastern side of Mt. Meylixueshan (6,740 m), the highest mountain in Yunnan Province, China, were investigated in the field. The Shenchenbao Glacier terminates currently at 3,570 m and in the valley below, four terminal moraines and one pair of grand lateral moraines are recognized. The lowest terminal moraine is located at 3,260 m, about 2.5 km down from the present glacier snout. The snout of the Lilogoru Glacier lies at 2,650 m, about 900 m lower than the Shenchenbao Glacier. The Alpha Chapter is surprising itself every year with more initiates (21 this year) and more active members (35 very active individuals)! We were a busy bunch this year starting with our Homecoming float and kiddy kazoo band, in conjunction with the Political Science Club, with 60 parents and children participating, and even receiving third place award of $150. National Geography Awareness week included geography quizzes across campus, selling geography T-shirts, and visits to the local Junior High schools to make kids more aware of geography. We even had a 6th grade geography poster contest with local stores donating prizes.

While the relation between vegetation clearance and increasing streamflow appears to be strong for data aggregated among geographic regions, results are equivocal in local areas. Earlier data are re-analyzed to consider the role of hydroclimatology. While vegetation clearance increases absolute streamflow, the proportional change is not significant. Residuals of regressions of absolute and proportional change in streamflow on vegetation clearance are related to precipitation, with positive and negative slopes, respectively. A few outliers with high responses are important in creating a pattern, and hydroclimatology is a better predictor of change in streamflow than is vegetation clearance for aggregate data. With …

This paper describes an alternative to capstone field courses in undergraduate curricula. Early opportunities for faculty guided exploration and discovery provide students with firsthand field experience and is an effective means of recruiting and retaining qualified geography majors. A wide ranging, rapid movement model is more effective for introducing students to the spatial character of geography than single destination capstone courses

Due to the United States' reliance upon the electoral college, its presidential elections are intrinsically geographic events. In their campaigns successful candidates must address issues of varying pertinence in different places and at different geographic scales. The three 1992 presidential debates provide an opportunity to consider the relative geographic emphases of the three presidential candidates based on their references to geographic places. This paper uses the verbatim dialogue of the 1992 presidential debates to extract place name references by each of the three candidates. A geographical analysis of 39 cemeteries in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, reveals a cultural mosaic of the parish. While French Louisiana culture is dominant throughout the area, some elements of the Upland South culture, such as feet-to-east burial orientation, appear in eastern Ascension Parish. The distribution pattern of above ground burials indicates a cultural hierarchy in western Ascension Parish with Donaldsonville in its peak.

This article presents a paper developed by the AAG Organizing Committee on Locational Information and the Public Interest through a summit held in Santa Barbara, California in June 2022. The summit resulted in goals and ideas for addressing the issues that arise from the present environment for geodata, whereby public, private, and third-sector entities can tap into publicly available locational information with relatively little regulation on its access or use. Formative processes of a turf producing region are examined in Tsukuba City, the leading turf producing area in Japan. Turf production in Tsukuba City is carried out together by turf traders and landscape gardeners. Due to the urbanization of Tsukuba City, almost all farms are now operated part time. Since even elderly farmers can easily produce turf, turf production has become a widely accepted activity. Moreover, a golf course construction boom has lead to a greater demand in turf production and to high prices of turf.

Determination of the source of sediment in rivers and streams is important in order to effectively implement a program to reduce its concentration. This project uses agricultural chemicals as indicators of current sources of sediment from farm fields in the Cedar River, Iowa watershed. We hypothesized that the relations of sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorous yields to precipitation would indicate whether sediment originated from erosion of fields or from channel bank erosion of floodplains. The changes in sediment, nitrate, and phosphorus in the channel in response to rainfall events were determined. In simple regressions, all three variables have similar slopes when …

Based on data from aerial photographs the form, material component, and structure of the urban surface of Shanghai Proper are quantitatively mapped, classified, and analyzed. Relationships between the characteristic of the land cover and urban problems are identified. Urban surfaces include natural features such as open water and culture surfaces such as tile roofs, and concrete surfaces. A quantitative analysis of the land cover reveals the historical development of Shanghai and the emergence of an urban basin with the taller buildings at the perimeter, not in the central city. Carroll County, with its longstanding tradition in agriculture, has had many past experiences with drought. This paper examines drought as it pertains to the farming community in the county. Precipitation statistics for the past 30 years are analyzed in context of the drought occurring in the summer of 1991. Crop loss and the subsequent implementation of federal emergency relief programs by the administering agencies within Carroll County are investigated and an assessment of their overall effectiveness is determined.
