Forest restoration in a contaminated zinc mining area must take into account the environmental soil properties. This study aimed to analyze the soil properties from the three different stages of restored forests, at 3, 7 and 17, focusing on the impact on soil microorganismsand availability of fungal species. Three study sites were selected, all located in a zinc mining area in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand. The results showed that observed soil properties especially soil texture, moisture and nutrients differed between stand initiation and regrowth forests and affected the distribution of fungal species. Soils in older forest stands up to …

A Study On Developing Ventilation In Restaurants In Re-Purposed Row Houses, Sumavalee Chindapol
Applied Environmental Research
The building ventilation of seventy-seven row houses in eight districts in Chiang Mai province of Thailand was surveyed and investigated. A typical row house re-purposed as a restaurant refers to a 3.5 m high space with two stoves in the front of the building and a closed rear area to serve as storage. As a base-case, restaurants had an average capacity of 24 customers in the dining area. Measurements of internal air quality of a selected restaurant were conducted in the summer season of 2015 and 2017, and the results revealed average air temperatures of 36°C and 33°C, relative humidity …

Trophic Models Of Seagrass Ecosystems In Maqueda Channel, Caramoan Peninsula, Philippines, Michael A. Clores, Michael A. Cuesta
Applied Environmental Research
Steady-state trophic models were constructed using the Ecopath with Ecosim software to examine the general status, development trends, and functional integrity of three extensive seagrass meadows located in Maqueda Channel of Caramoan Peninsula, Southern Luzon Island, Philippines. The results show that the ecosystems are composed of 23-24 functional groups with effective trophic levels extending from 1.00 to 3.76. Mixed trophic impacts show that decrease in the biomass of grazers Tripneustes gratilla (collector urchin) had a positive impact on the biomass of seagrasses. On the other hand, a positive effect on the benthic groups is expected with an assumed decrease in …

Effect Of Synthesized Conditions Of Cu-K-Oms-2 On Toluene Oxidation Performance, Chatkamol Kaewbuddee, Narong Chanlek, Kitirote Wantala
Applied Environmental Research
The objective of this study was to optimize synthesis conditions for the Cu-K-OMS-2 hydrothermal process. The effects of ageing temperature, ageing time and amount of copper(Cu) dopant were considered via using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) method to characterizethe conditions for gaseous toluene degradation. In the models studied, the independent variables were ageing temperature (55-145ºC), ageing time (6-18 h) and amount of Cu dopant (2-6% mole). The quadratic model fitted very well with the experimental data (15 runs), which showed a higher value of R2(0.98) and adjusted R2(0.95), confirming that the model can explain the results successfully. Ageing temperature was found …

Commmunity, Ecology, And Modernity: Faunal Analysis Of Skútustaðir In Mývatnssveit, Northern Iceland, Megan Hicks
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the archaeofaunal remains from Skútustaðir, a middle to high-status farm in Mývatnssveit, Northern Iceland, to understand the experience of rural communities and their ecologies during Iceland’s transition from regulated colonial exchange to a capitalist economy during the 17th through 19th centuries. Archaeofaunal analysis is used to reconstruct changes in the ways that people herded, hunted, and fished, providing insights into how they managed their local environments for subsistence and novel contexts of exchange. In addition to archaeofaunal analysis, primary textual sources are explored to assess how the Skútustaðir household and its rural community mobilized long-term …

Key Elements Of Environmental Justice In The Geothermal Power Plant Resistance Movement, Priyo Fajar Santoso, Bevaola Kusumasari
Jurnal Politik
Geothermal energy is currently considered as an environmentally friendly, renewable energy source. However, based on empirical data from various countries, geothermal energy production often results socioecological losses for the host community. Various environmental justice movements have emerged to protect environment by protestesting and providing a counter discourse against the dominant perception that geothermal energy is renewable and environmentally friendly. As Indonesian government put more effort to develop more geothermal power thermal across the country, more reactions also emerge and surprisingly include the critical one. This article aims to look at one of the critical reaction from community to counter the …

Do Corporate Owned Adaptive Learning Platforms Perpetuate Banking Style Learning? Integrating Technology For Activism Into Transformational Sustainability Education, Tina M. Garner
Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers
We live in a world that tends to be controlled by corporations. The public school system should be wary of the problems that corporate control has on education. Even though public schools should not have corporate influence, the fact remains that they do, and this perpetuates Freire's banking style learning. Through time, the corporate influence in education was through educational materials such as book sales. Since the decline of the use of books and the growth of the use of technologies, corporations have followed suit through the sales of Adaptive Learning Platforms. Through leveraging the technology which students enjoy using, …
Negative Impacts Of The Beef Industry: Lab-Grown Meat, Stephanie Grass
Negative Impacts Of The Beef Industry: Lab-Grown Meat, Stephanie Grass
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
The beef industry is harmful to the environment and human health and alternative solutions must be implemented in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. Water and grain are used in agriculture in abundance despite the negative environmental effects it causes. Cattle are the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the sector, also contributing to climate change. Antibiotics are used in large quantities without regard to potential future consequences. One potential solution for this problem is lab-grown beef, which demands very little from the consumer and would take pressure off the environmental issues the beef industry creates. Lab-grown …

Social Interactions Do Not Drive Territory Aggregation In A Grassland Songbird, S.K. Winnicki, S.M. Munguia, E.J. Williams, W.A. Boyle
United States National Park Service: Publications
Understanding the drivers of animal distributions is a fundamental goal of ecology and informs habitat management. The costs and benefits of colonial aggregations in animals are well established, but the factors leading to aggregation in territorial animals remain unclear. Territorial animals might aggregate to facilitate social behavior such as (1) group defense from predators and/or parasites, (2) cooperative care of offspring, (3) extra-pair mating, and/or (4) mitigating costs of extra-pair mating through kin selection. Using experimental and observational methods, we tested predictions of all four hypotheses in a tallgrass prairie in northeast Kansas, United States. Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) males …

Food Deserts Debunked And Decentered: From Deficit To Relational Mapping For Food Justice In Worcester, Ma, Brenna Robeson
Food Deserts Debunked And Decentered: From Deficit To Relational Mapping For Food Justice In Worcester, Ma, Brenna Robeson
Sustainability and Social Justice
The mapping of food deserts has become a standardized component of food and health policy work concerned with expanding food access. These maps often follow a similar format of spatially identifying where grocery stores are absent in communities, thus suggesting a straightforward problem diagnosis and intervention blueprint. This paper questions the over-emphasis among many food and health policy practitioners on these technically engineered policy stories, specifically for their obstruction of histories of white supremacy and capitalism within the US food system and urban landscapes. A mixed-methods approach is applied to a case study of Worcester, MA which appropriates GIS to …

Vegetation Monitoring At Homestead National Monument Of America, Nebraska, 1998–2017, Sherry A. Leis
United States National Park Service: Publications
Executive Summary
The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network has sampled permanent monitoring sites in three vegetation community types (restored prairie, successional forest, and bur oak forest) at Homestead National Monument of America since 1998 (includes nine sample years). Network scientists record each species, aerial cover estimates of ground flora, diameter at breast height of midstory and overstory trees, and tree regeneration frequency (tree seedlings and saplings) within these permanent sites.
The park has experienced similar periods of drought and wetness through the monitoring record. Ground cover estimates indicate that prairie litter and bare ground are negatively related; prescribed fire cycles …

Stable Isotope And Geochemical Characterization Of Nutrient Sources In The Big Creek Watershed Of Northwest Arkansas, Kelly Robin Sokolosky
Stable Isotope And Geochemical Characterization Of Nutrient Sources In The Big Creek Watershed Of Northwest Arkansas, Kelly Robin Sokolosky
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The establishment of a concentrated animal-feeding operation (CAFO) in Newton County, Arkansas near Big Creek, a tributary of the Buffalo National River, has raised concern over potential degradation of water-quality in the watershed. In this study, isotopic tools were combined with standard geochemical approaches to characterize nutrient sources and dynamics in Big Creek. An isotopic and geochemical reference library of potential nutrient sources in the Big Creek watershed was established by direct sampling of representative potential sources, including septic-system effluent, poultry litter, swine and cattle manure, and CAFO waste lagoons. Representative nutrient sources and Big Creek stream samples were analyzed …
