Health Preferences And Culturally Appropriate Strategies To Reduce Bear Bile Demand In Northern Vietnam, Shannon Randolph, Laura Zhang, Lena Tran, Mai Nguyen, Kimberley Ha Sep 2019

Health Preferences And Culturally Appropriate Strategies To Reduce Bear Bile Demand In Northern Vietnam, Shannon Randolph, Laura Zhang, Lena Tran, Mai Nguyen, Kimberley Ha

EnviroLab Asia

Animal products, such as pangolin scales, rhinoceros horns, tiger bones, and bear bile have been used in East Asian traditional medicine (TM) for more than 2,000 years. However, markets for medicinal wildlife products have expanded dramatically in countries like China and Vietnam in recent decades where economic prosperity has enabled a larger proportion of the population to afford wildlife products (Olmedo et al. 2017). Related new farming and commercialization practices to meet growing international demand pose environmental and human health risks. Animal products also symbolize shared cultural and historical medical practices that are distinct from the dominant Western medical model.

Nonlinear Reaction–Diffusion Process Models Improve Inference For Population Dynamics, Xinyi Lu, Perry J. Williams, Mevin B. Hooten, James A. Powell, Jamie N. Womble, Michael R. Bower Sep 2019

Nonlinear Reaction–Diffusion Process Models Improve Inference For Population Dynamics, Xinyi Lu, Perry J. Williams, Mevin B. Hooten, James A. Powell, Jamie N. Womble, Michael R. Bower

United States National Park Service: Publications

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are a useful tool for modeling spatiotemporal dynamics of ecological processes. However, as an ecological process evolves, we need statistical models that can adapt to changing dynamics as new data are collected. We developed a model that combines an ecological diffusion equation and logistic growth to characterize colonization processes of a population that establishes long-term equilibrium over a heterogeneous environment. We also developed a homogenization strategy to statistically upscale the PDE for faster computation and adopted a hierarchical framework to accommodate multiple data sources collected at different spatial scales. We highlighted the advantages of using a …

Ecotourism And The Middle East: Lessons In Development, Andrew Ver Steeg Sep 2019

Ecotourism And The Middle East: Lessons In Development, Andrew Ver Steeg

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Economics and World Affairs

In this paper I hope to introduce the reader to the aims of the ecotourism industry, its different actors, and some of its pitfalls and potential. I then turn discussion to the unique successes and challenges of developing the ecotourism sector in two nations that have already done much to lead the field in the Middle East, Jordan and Oman. I conclude with larger lessons and recommendations that have relevance for the Middle East as a whole while arguing that, though it may face some challenges, ecotourism has the potential to sustainably and sensitively aid the development of Middle Eastern …

Drones As A Tool To Monitor Human Impacts And Vegetation Changes In Parks And Protected Areas, Francisco Javier Ancin-Murguzur, Lorena Munoz, Christopher Monz, Vera H. Hausner Sep 2019

Drones As A Tool To Monitor Human Impacts And Vegetation Changes In Parks And Protected Areas, Francisco Javier Ancin-Murguzur, Lorena Munoz, Christopher Monz, Vera H. Hausner

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Increased visitation to protected areas could have adverse impacts on the conservation values in the protected areas, and therefore effective visitor monitoring methods are needed to meet the complex management challenges that arise. Collecting data on human impacts is highly time consuming, thus requiring more effective tools that allow for high-quality and long-term measurements. In this study, we show how unmanned aerial vehicles (i.e. UAV or drones) could be used to monitor tourism impacts in protected areas. Tourism has boomed in national parks in Norway in recent years, such as in Jotunheimen National Park for which this study applies. We …

Permafrost Hydrology Drives The Assimilation Of Old Carbon By Stream Food Webs In The Arctic, Jonathan A. O’Donnell, Michael P. Carey, Joshua C. Koch, Xiaomei Xu, Brett A. Poulin, Jennifer Walker, Christian E. Zimmerman Sep 2019

Zimmerman

United States National Park Service: Publications

Permafrost thaw in the Arctic is mobilizing old carbon (C) from soils to aquatic ecosystems and the atmosphere. Little is known, however, about the assimilation of old C by aquatic food webs in Arctic watersheds. Here, we used C isotopes (d13C, D14C) to quantify C assimilation by biota across 12 streams in arctic Alaska. Streams spanned watersheds with varying permafrost hydrology, from ice-poor bedrock to ice-rich loess (that is, yedoma). We measured isotopic content of (1) C sources including dissolved organic C (DOC), dissolved inorganic C (DIC), and soil C, and (2) stream biota, including benthic biofilm and macroinvertebrates, and …

Theatre & The Environment: Cross-Cultural Exchange Through Travel And Performance Activism, Betel Solomon Tesfamariam Sep 2019

Theatre & The Environment: Cross-Cultural Exchange Through Travel And Performance Activism, Betel Solomon Tesfamariam

EnviroLab Asia

Performance activism, collaborative and cross-cultural, were keys to the success of EnviroLab Asia's clinic trip to Thailand in May 2018. Working with peers in Thai universities, this writer reflects on the degree to which her immersion in local environmental struggles in Thailand, and the compelling theater project that grew out of it, also has helped her understand some of the same pressures that confront her home communities in Africa.

Familiarity & Unfamiliarity, Luyi Huang Sep 2019

Familiarity & Unfamiliarity, Luyi Huang

EnviroLab Asia

During the May 2018 EnviroLab Clinic Trip to Thailand, and as part of the performance group, the author encountered an important linguistic barrier. Because the Thai and US-based dancers did not know each other's language, they had to learn to trust each other's body language as their form of communication. The unfamiliar became familiar.

Analysis Of Environmental Performances Of Ferritization Method For The Treatment Of Copper-Ammonia Wastewater Under The Optimized Condition Via Rsm, Kanokporn Supong, Parnuwat Usapein, Pirapan Polburee Sep 2019

Analysis Of Environmental Performances Of Ferritization Method For The Treatment Of Copper-Ammonia Wastewater Under The Optimized Condition Via Rsm, Kanokporn Supong, Parnuwat Usapein, Pirapan Polburee

Applied Environmental Research

Copper-ammonia wastewater from industrial processes is an important form of hazardous waste that can contaminate water resources. The conventional hydroxide precipitation method used to remove copper complexes produces a large volume of unstable precipitates which still require further treatment. Ferritization is a powerful technique to remove bivalent cations from wastewater in the form of metal ferrites. This method is highly efficient in removal of metal complex ions; in addition, sludge resulting from this method is stable. The objective of this study was to investigate optimum conditions for ferritization using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). After optimal conditions were determined, the environmental …

Estimation Of Streamflow With Incomplete Soil Dataset In Krasioa Basin Using Soil-Landscape Evaluation Approach And Swat Model, Isared Kakarndee, Ekasit Kositsakulchai Sep 2019

Estimation Of Streamflow With Incomplete Soil Dataset In Krasioa Basin Using Soil-Landscape Evaluation Approach And Swat Model, Isared Kakarndee, Ekasit Kositsakulchai

Applied Environmental Research

Data on soil properties are indispensable for process-based hydrological modeling. Soil information of Thailand is primarily provided by the Land Development Department (LDD), nevertheless soil property data are available only in arable land whose slope is less than 35%. The steep-slope land was generally labeled as Slope Complex (SC), there is no informationavailable. This paper demonstrated the application of soil-landscape evaluation approach for predicting the missing properties of soil which resulted on enhancement of model performance in streamflow estimation in Krasioa Basin by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The physical properties of soil-soil thickness, fraction of soil …

Source And Health Risk Assessment Of Some Heavy Metals In Non-Certified Organic Rice Farming At Nakhon Nayok Province, Thailand, Porntiwa Satachon, Sasithorn Keawmoon, Patcharida Rengsungnoen, Sirikul Thummajitsakul, Kun Silprasit Sep 2019

Source And Health Risk Assessment Of Some Heavy Metals In Non-Certified Organic Rice Farming At Nakhon Nayok Province, Thailand, Porntiwa Satachon, Sasithorn Keawmoon, Patcharida Rengsungnoen, Sirikul Thummajitsakul, Kun Silprasit

Applied Environmental Research

Heavy metals contamination is a problem in some non-certified organic rice farms that do not have buffer zones. Soil monitoring is therefore required to estimate the potential risk of such organic products. The objectives of the present study are to determine the extent of heavy metal contamination, sources of contamination and assessment of non-carcinogenic health risks to local consumers. Concentrations of toxic heavy metals were determined in soil and rice grain to assess the bioaccumulation factor. The health risk assessment was analyzed following Target Hazard Quotients (THQ) and the Hazard Index (HI). Sources of heavy metal contamination were determined by …

Social Vulnerability To Large Wildfires In The Western Usa, Palaiologos Palaiologou, Alan A. Ager, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Cody Evers, Michelle A. Day Sep 2019

Social Vulnerability To Large Wildfires In The Western Usa, Palaiologos Palaiologou, Alan A. Ager, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Cody Evers, Michelle A. Day

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Federal land managers in the US can be informed with quantitative assessments of the social conditions of the populations affected by wildfires originating on their administered lands in order to incorporate and adapt their management strategy to achieve a more targeted prioritization of community wildfire protection investments. In addition, these assessments are valuable to socially vulnerable communities for quantifying their exposure to wildfires originating on adjacent land tenures. We assessed fire transmission patterns using fire behavior simulations to understand spatial variations across three diverse study areas (North-central Washington; Central California; and Northern New Mexico) to understand how different land tenures …

Cyborgs For Environmental Justice: East Asian American Stories From The 1991 People Of Color Environmental Leadership Summit, Lisa Ng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The goal of this paper is threefold: to serve as an oral history archive of the East Asian American experience at the 1991 People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit, to analyze the role of East Asian Americans in the Environmental Justice Movement (EJM), and to fill an ideological and political vacuum that exists in East Asian American communities. This work analyses the experiences of East Asian Americans who were present at the 1991 People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit--an event scholars have attributed to igniting the EJM. The paper argues that East Asian Americans act as “Cyborgs”—both as their ascribed …
